My great uncle and my grandad can be really bad. My mum tries to like use the excuse of "well they were raised in a different time"

And?

It's not the 1920s anymore, times have changed, information is easily available. Can't keep making excuses for hateful attitudes

And then there's Donald Trump tweeting his thanks to everyone "congratulating him for being right" instead of expressing condolences for this terrible tragedy. Who on earth would celebrate at a time like this.

My mum is more open and accepting than my dad by a lot. Not once can I ever recall her being prejudiced towards anybody in a minority and it was her who raised me with my attitudes and beliefs. My dad is a different story though, he still says a lot of really horrible **** from time to time, but me and my sister normally combat him on those.

Other family members are a different story though
Before I enlisted into the USAF, I wasn't as accepting...but that was everyday brainwashing. 7 years into my enlistment, I began seeing the issue for what it really was: discrimination. I wasn't the same since. Now I understand why my baby brother would regularly call me out all those years ago when that venom came out of my mouth. Now, I know better. He was right, then, and I bet he's right now. If I can be used as an example, I hope people change their viewpoints, given time.

I know all about bad dads, bro.
My dad sucks. Posted all sorts of hateful stuff about Muslims and black people on his facebook. *shakes head*

He USED to be pretty understanding of other cultures but after he divorced my mom he gradually went full conservative socially on everything except gay rights and Latin America.
Yeah, that kind of sucks.

My dad is generally nice and a fairly rational guy (trained as a Confucian philosopher who became an evangelical Christian... seriously, true story!). About issues to do with history and theology, he accepts nuance and that things are usually grey.

But when it comes to "modern western liberalism", all bets are off :o He's said things about "Obama is the anti-christ!" and like "gays are trying to take over society, can't they leave us alone?" Now he's like "watch out for the US, they will shove this crap down China's throat, don't let them!!!!!"

He's getting somewhat more ranty in his senior years  I guess it comes with getting older.

But your dad is "liberal" about LGBT and Latin America while hating blacks? That's... a weird combo

The only people who would celebrate something like that are those who fall in line with him. It's honestly disgusting

Well, if they were raised in the 1920s, I think it is what it is. Do your grandparents use the internet? If not, then well I can see people keeping their bigotry to the grave. Also, the more you try to lecture people, the more defensive people get.

My uncle and my dad are political opposites, its hilarious. My dad is super conservative and my uncle is super liberal to the point of SJW smugness sometimes  The rule at family gatherings is "no politics, please...." :XD

He's pretty much saying the same kind of stuff you are, actually. Just with a lot more ego and insensitivity :ph43r:

I'm honestly surprised I never got a customer complaint that time in work when a customer made a comment about one of my coworkers being "too gay" and how she didn't like it.

I was very vocal when it was relayed to me

Yeah Cao Liang, they're both very active online. Like my great uncle took me off facebook cause I would always combat his posts.

Like it was all dumb stuff, there was an art gallery in venice where a woman was wearing like a reflective burkha. And some right wing uk party twisted it to be like "this is what muslim lollipop women will look like, absolutely appalling or somethinv" and he was agreeing with them

I was like.... that's literally from an art show in venice and he got really defensive and deleted me lmao

Heh :o I see, most seniors I know don't really use social media (they're Chinese though, so...)

My dad doesn't use facebook, my mom does but only to post pics of my sister's baby twins and such, so its fine. She sometimes is like "hey son don't post so much "controversial" opinions people can read you online and fire you!" and I'm like "whatever mom" I cut her out of my posts, but I can still see her (very occasional) updates because they're pretty harmless fluff

I've blocked my (very liberal, to the point of SJW smugness) uncle because he was as ranty as my dad but in the opposite direction ("Christian taliban know-nothings!") I was like "umm yeah bye  "

Thus, I became a radical centrist :heykosho: I hate both sides

The whole situation has left me feeling heavy hearted really. It's the same battle for acceptance every day and it doesn't get any easier :tora:

This is why I'll always advocate that we need pride and other LGBT spaces that aren't solely nightclubs

Yeah, well my dad's most charitable opinion of LGBT is
"just do what you do, in the dark, no one needs to know, why are you pushing it in our face?"

At least he's not like "kill them all!" :kurokan:

And Trump is actually one level better, into pure indifference:

"some guys like spaghetti, some guys like steak"
For the republicans, that's actually an improvement from outright hatred to sheer indifference

I just hate the "pushing it in our face" thing, cause they use that for even couples being together in public.

Like nobody says anything about the straight couples in public that tongue each other and play fight and get in everyone's way but it's so terrible to see a same sex couple holding hands hide your kids!!!
