My family and I visited Budapest for like 3 days in the mid-2000s, it was fun. The only European country we visited where we couldn't at least try and guess the road signs (in Germany, France, Italy, etc you could still guess the road signage because they all shared Germanic or Latin roots with English. In Hungarian though? Nope  ... except words from Latin here and there, but pretty rare  )

English: City Center
In French: Centre-Ville
In German: Stadt Zentrum
In Hungarian: városközpont (???)
I mean, I find Hungarian interesting because it is Hungarian but also retains a non-European element in its language and culture.

Hungary
Hongrie (French)
Ungarn (German)
Magyaroszag (Hungarian... ????!!!! )
You bring up their non-European origins, some happily admit it (we are the sons of Attila! HURRAH!) and some would ADAMANTLY be against it! (We are white Europeans! We are in the true centre of Europe! We fought the Turks! etc)

Reminds me of Maltese people

You're a Maltese person walking around with a surname like "Zahra", the Maltese language is clearly Arabic-derived, half of Maltese people wouldn't look out of place selling carpets on a bazaar in Marrakech... but dare suggest we have any North African ancestry and you risk getting punched.

Irony, I'm probably the whitest Maltese person you'll ever meet while being the most honest about our history.

The Magyars were a non-European tribe, they were definitely from at least as far east as Central Russia if not further east.

I can see Malta being Arabic-derived, though its bastion as the rock of "western civilization" against the Ottomans may have swayed identities somewhat.

I love the story where the British only had 3 biplanes on Malta and somehow managed to beat back the Luftwaffe  (albeit IRL there were clearly "proper" British fighters in Malta, but the "three rickety old biplanes" story is still the best  )

BTW "white arabs" are pretty common. Steve Jobs was Arabic, for example, and people definitely thought of him as "white"

We used to deal with spiders in Canada, whenever you didn't use a bathroom for a while (common because our house in Canada had 7 (!!!) bathrooms) you would get spiders, mostly small ones. I just flushed them down the toilet after using a tissue to carry them. No biggie.

The Maltese are basically a hybrid. The country has Latin/Italian, Iberian, French, Arab and Maghrebi influences on it's culture and a typical Maltese person will have ancestry from all those groups. They just heavily deny being partly Arab/North African and prefer to be thought of as just European.

I... never heard that about the planes before  Although I know it wasn't as well defended as it could have been (impossible really, with the war happening all over Europe, everyone was stretched).

The country was very heavily bombed during WW2, and starved out because any incoming supply ships were sunk by the Italians and Germans. There were people literally starving out on the streets, resorting to eating rats and shoe leather. It was pretty much a humanitarian crisis tbh. My Grandfather lost an older brother, he and a priest died when a building collapsed in on them. One of my great aunts also ended up mentally traumatised and was never the same again. It was just really sad.

But they pulled through, and Maltese people as a collective were awarded The George Cross for their resilience after the war.

I think "white Arab" is subjective. Some consider themselves white and that's fine, "white" isn't clearly defined. I think in most European countries though they're thought of as a different race.

The Germans and Italians needed Malta because British ships and planes from Malta kept using radar (then new) and broken German ULTRA code to continuously and effectively attack and sink German and Italian transports, ships, planes and other things. The German-Italians pounded Malta but neither Mussolini nor Hitler could spare troops for an actual amphibious assault on Malta. Hitler ruled out using Paratroopers because he saw the Germans lose 6,000 paratroopers in a single battle (Crete, though the Germans won) and refused to "lose so many trained men at once"... a ha ha ha ha there Stalingrad wants a word with you there Herr Hitler  (200,000)

Anyway, Malta played a major role in WW2 thats sometimes forgotten.

The 3 biplanes were Gloucester Gladiators (ww1-era) named "Faith", "Hope" and "Charity"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Far_Fighter_Flight

Ok, I stand corrected, they fought mostly the Italians, the "Regio Aeronaule" rather than the German Luftwaffe, and there were more than just 3 planes :XD . Regardless, a decent fighting effort against long odds
Malta basically cut off Axis supply lines in North Africa by its very existence and its stubborn resistance, also bourne out in the 16th century siege.

Yeah that's pretty much it, they wanted a clear route to North Africa and The Middle East and Malta (under British military control) kind of got in the way. The islands have always been important as a naval base for whoever controlled it, which is why they've been invaded and colonised by so many people.

I think it was Italians first and then The Germans came later, IIRC. Basically the Italians weren't doing a good enough job of bombing Malta into submission, so The Germans had a go.

The WW2 Italians were kind of butt monkeys :doge:
I could see the Gloucester biplanes fighting off the Italians. The Luftwaffe would be another matter. By then, the RAF had hurricane fighters ("proper" fighters rather than random seaplanes jerry-rigged with machine guns  ) and while the bombing was heavy the RAF presence was able to steer off any German paratroop or naval landing, which was the only way for the Axis to knock out Malta completely. It didn't happen in the 16th century, and it didn't happen in 1942. The defence held both times

no idea what caused it. Hints it might be racial, which is bad. If it was football or something at least it follows a traditional pattern. This is new tbh

I've heard stuff like this before but it's not really that common. I think it used to happen more in the 80s

Probably trashy chavs
