Having diversity for the sake of diversity should be the standard.
Nah screw that
Why not? What is a legitimate argument against it?

I don't see what's wrong with having characters of different backgrounds. Especially in kid's shows.

Like british kids shows have been good for that for a while now that I think of it. When I was growing up watching like Blue Peter and other live kids shows it was very rare to maybe see like one black child every 20 episodes or something, but now it's a lot different and it's nice to see
I think that's why I loved Out of the Box a lot whenever that was on the Disney Channel too

Nothing though if they do want to make it realistic, they should show how ******* racist the British people have always been toward them. :)

"Nowadays, people are talking about it more, (but) things either call for things, or they don’t. I remember back when I was a child watching The Brady Bunch and they started to get all politically correct, like, OK, let’s have an Asian child and a black — I used to get more offended by that than just — I grew up watching blaxploitation movies, right? And I said, that’s great. I didn’t go like, OK, there should be more white people in these movies."

Tim Burton coming apart at the seams.
Look, the fact that Miss Peregrine didn't have either of the same three actors/actresses (granted if Christopher Lee wasn't dead I'm sure he would have shown up) AND had Samuel L. Jackson, this is the most diverse Tim Burton film to date.

That, and Danny Elfman NOT composing the music, this is a huge step for Burton.

Even then there's an extensive list of movies/tv shows based on books where a character is made white for no reason. But if it's the other way around people kick up a huge fuss. Like for example the Hunger Games. Katniss was described in the books as having olive skin but pale white JLaw was cast for her while people kicked up a fuss over Rue being black in the movie despite her being so in the book.
Well yeah, but once again, I was only talking about Tim Burton :XD I wasn't talking about the other movies, like the most recent Peter Pan for instance, that was pretty stupid casting all-around. I don't remember people fussing about Rue being black, it's stated pretty explicitly that she and Thresh (and the majority of District 11) are dark-skinned, so I thought she was portrayed perfectly fine (and was under the impression others thought so too, but I guess I was wrong)

@swan: I was saying diversity for the sake of diversity would be stupid if it made no sense. Like having a black or brown actor portray someone in a film about the Han Dynasty, because there were too many Asians cast, lol. Similarly, this Burton movie is just following the book. I wasn't talking about having ethnically diverse characters in kid's shows and movies and such, in fact, shows with those kinds of characters were my favorite. Also, I totally disagree, since we can't speak for everyone there. I grew up watching a whole bunch of people on T.V that looked nothing like me, and that hasn't affected my perception of myself in the least, so I believe negative effects of this largely depend on the sensitivity of the person/child. Of course I'm not against every race having enough representation in the media, I'm just saying I couldn't care less about it myself. But I'm done with this discussion now since it's probably not going to go anywhere, see you everyone!

Speaking of, it had a Howl's Moving Castle feel. First quarter of the movie followed the book alright, but then goes waaaaaay off the tracks into '**** the book, I do what I want' realm.

Would inserting multicultural children have made it better?

*shrug*

I went to see it for Samuel L. Jackson, and he was legit the best thing in the entire movie. Seriously, see it for him. He looks like he's having so much fun...

There's also a huge Deep Blue Sea reference in the film, which made me laugh so hard that children were all thinking I was insane.

Screw them. It was beautiful...

Yeah there were a lot of people kicking off about Rue being black, there's multiple articles like this one all over the net http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/white-until-proven-black-imagining-race-in-hunger-games

That's entirely different. Race dynamics are different for one. Two, Peregrines isn't a historical retelling of an event that only involves one racial group. Anyone who would push for racial diversity in a Han Dynasty movie is disgusting. Diversity should be in movies where they can be applicable. Peregrines is a fantasy movie, but other races than white are just too out there in the world of superpowers or magic, or whatever this movie is about.

It's basically Tim Burton's take on X-Men

Yeah the argument against Rue was that in the book Katniss said "she reminded her of Prim" but like I think in the next sentence or something Katniss says something about her skin where it's pretty obvious she supposed to be black. lol

That scene was so good lmao.
I remember that it was on TV when I was like 6 or something and my parents were watching it, I came through into the room where the woman cuts her arm and jumps in the water to bait the shark and my dad like panicking and rushing to the tv to turn it off before I saw anymore lol

Exactly.

Let's just say a character gets that treatment in this film and any who saw DBS were like 'OH BOY, HERE IT COMES'.

I love that movie. Not Peregrine's, but Deep Blue Sea.

Speaking of SURPRISE DIVERSITY. Cho Chang. When Potter fans flipped their **** when they casted an Asian actress and I'm just like... but... she's... okay.jpg.

I love that movie and Lake Placid. Have you seen that one? It's the one with the giant crocodiles(or alligators, it doesn't matter). It's so funny.
