So that's Sino-Japan in a nutshell. Both Chinese and Japanese names are used in the same universe :XD

Chou Ryuuen Upon becoming a Warrior of Suzaku becomes Nuriko The Celestial Name Given To him by Suzaku. However He went by Chou Kourin at First the name of his little Sister then Nuriko,he hasn't gone by Ryuuen since he was 10
And gets Extremely annoyed if anyone uses Ryuuen over Nuriko or Kourin even Miaka

So why do they use both Chinese AND Japanese names? You're still proving my point and I don't really care about Fushigi Yugi lore
迢 柳娟

Huh the name has the same character (娟) as my mom's name, that's clearly a girl's name though with that kanji radical

Yes. Tiao isn't really a Chinese surname either. Its just something Yuu Watase made up entirely.

So I refuse to call the Fushigi-Yugi world "China" the MOST I'll call it is Sino-(Heian-era) Japan

Lmao I can Explain the Female Kanji and Female Seiyuu in both Japanese and English that's Easy : trying to Portray Nuriko's Dual Gender identity by Mixing Female Voice/Name with a Biologically Male Body

So Nuriko is essentially Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner in Heian-era Japan

Heian-era Japan (700s to 1185, ending with the Gempei wars) was heavily, heavily influenced by China, compared to the later Ashikaga and Sengoku periods where the Samurai class had germinated and matured into something unique to Japan. Heian-era Japan was rather more peaceable and "the Tales of Genji" were about courtly love a la Fushigi Yugi rather than the warlike Sengoku era that we are more familiar with. So, Heian Japan is a good metaphor for the world of Fushigi Yugi IMO (and I think Heian-era aristocrats would know of Fu Xi and Nu Wa). It all came crashing down though because the Buddhists monks became overbearingly powerful, Taira Kiyomori put them in their place  (Historical Kiyomori was a badass: His WO version is just an ass  ) Then the Gempei wars, etc pretty much destroyed that peaceable fabric IIRC

*AHEM* :beard:

ALL Japanese aristocrats in the Heian era were required to read and write Chinese :beard: Only girls and women knew hiragana. Men were required to know how to read Chinese (though not speaking it) . Pretty much all courtly documents in Japan (and Korea and Vietnam) were written in Chinese until later.

Takeda Shingen's Chinese was very good. In fact, he used to hold and win Chinese poetry competitions. Well-educated Japanese in those days all knew how to read and write classical Chinese for many, many centuries, until at least 1945 even (when English finally took over).

Japan even coined a lot of terms in Kanji that were "re-borrowed" back into modern Chinese, like "phone", "train", "car", "electricity". My dad, an ardent Chinese patriot and who usually dislikes Japan, praised them for this. "Their Chinese was really good, damn"

So there's a couple guys at work who insist on calling me by my real name.

For those who don't know, it's Elisabeth. I prefer to be called Beth irl.

Anyway, I normally hate being called that. But over the last week I've warmed up to it and actually find it quite funny. Especially when they use it in the context of "Bout time you showed up Elisabeth." And I'm their manager...

Aaand I'm rambling again. I'll shut up now.
