Comic book's tanking sales are from the stranglehold Diamond Distribution has on the American market preventing the books from being sold in gas stations, grocery stores, news stands etc that you used to find them in all the time. Combined with the expensive archival glossy paper modern comics like to print on (thanks to the speculators boom in the 90s making every comic a "collectible"), the cost to the consumer has increased far beyond what the average person is willing to spend on an impulse buy, which was where the majority of the comic industry's sales were.

I don't think we can draw any conclusions about what effect "pandering" has on the general audience because comic books are nigh inaccessible to a general audience anymore. At best we can see what effect it has on hardcore comic enthusiasts, which are pretty much all that's left buying them. And the effect doesn't look to be anything positive, since sales are still dropping every year.

Comic books all the way back to the 30s were consistently selling in numbers that only One Piece even hopes of seeing today, and that was for the trash. I don't think it has anything to do with quality of writing or art at all.

Make them cheap enough and stick them in places where the average person might snag one out of boredom or curiosity and sales will skyrocket again.

The hardcore enthuaist still buys them, but I think if they stopped all their gatekeeping bull**** a lot of people would feel more comfortable in buying them

depending on what counts as pandering

there was a definite increase in sales when Kamala Khan became Ms. Marvel. Sam Wilson as Falcon, Jane Foster as Thor, Iceman being outed as gay, RiRi taking over as Iron Man (Heart), and Miles Morales becoming the new Ultimate Spider-Man.

Granted the hike in sales for most of them only lasted like...a week (with the excetions being maybe Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man). So I would say there's some effect, but not a long lasting one in most cases.

and most certainly based on curiosity, probably. Rather than actual "hey Ghost Rider is a mexican now! Cool!"

The attitude that I gather is that sales spike because people either A: Don't believe the rumors are true and want to see the new gimmick themselves or B: Want to see what kind of train wreck the writers have assembled this time

After that, the novelty wears off and nobody cares. It's shock sales, nothing more.

The constant "reboots" and title changes don't help anything either. Having like 9 different X-Titles in the 90s helped to steer casual readers away and for some reason every other comic wanted to follow suit.

you're not wrong.

I think its the latter, though, mostly. The former...you'd have to not be paying attention to think its just a hoax. I dont think random people are walking into comic stores to buy a comic because they heard Cap might be black now. I think the only people buying comics, still, are people who read and enjoy comics.
I want pizza, guys. I'm gonna order pizza. Who's coming over so I know how much to get?

Nice

I also think it's a lot easier to take a more popular superhero and change it in some way, like instead of taking the risk with a new world/setting and everything else.

Cause I mean whenever Marvel changes anyone it's always people like "if you want ____ go and read _____ instead!" like okay, that series that ran for 10 issues and hasn't been printed since 2006? that's definitely what casual readers will be looking for/know about

I wasn't talking about casual readers, just fans.

Comic book fans are like MMO players now. They all still read comic books, but they tend to jump from one to the other and drop a series for any reason because none of them are really satisfying. The comic industry doesn't gain any new readers, they just shift around which books they're reading at the moment which is mistaken as a sales spike.

FFXIV doesn't gain "new" MMO players when an expansion comes out, they just get a bunch of refugees from WoW to try it out for a while before they go back. Iron Man didn't get anyone new to read comics by changing to a black girl, they got a bunch of fans from a different comic to temporarily give Iron Heart a look before going back to their main series.

Also new Overwatch hero.

Centaur robutt tank that the Numbani girl designed.

She's got a "set it" barrier with 1000 health and 10 sec cooldown, a mini graviton surge, an ultrasound that damage boosts everyone in the construct's line of sight, a defense ability that lets her ignore stuff like Reinhardt's hammer down and Pharah's push rocket, and a p.decent primary fire.
Ae ninja'd me.
Before I even started the post.
