Don’t be hating on him because he’s a white male protagonist, Kami

Would love a Star Trek Musou game too. Killing enemies with Vulcan Neck Pinch
How about hating him because he was brutal to his slaves, who were supposed to be freed prior to him inheriting them?

http://fair-use.org/national-anti-slavery-standard/1866/04/14/robert-e-lee-his-brutality-to-his-slaves

He was a good general though. There is no doubt about that. As far as being the best general in American history, that's a stretch, especially since the Confederates lost that war. The Union generals weren't anything great either. A lot of them either suffered heavy casualties in arguably Pyrrhic victories or just outright sucked. I'd rank Lee higher than any of them. The Union won because they had more resources to start with. When looking at the whole of American history though, the U.S. produced much better generals during the World Wars and later conflicts. Hell, despite losing in Vietnam the tactics employed there were effective. It was the strategy and war itself that sucked. Ditto with other modern American wars.

I'm one of those people who think that the statues of him should be kept. Because honestly, there are statues of all kinds of brutal figures around the world, including the biggest monster in history Genghis Khan. But I think people should know that he was not a good guy at all. You can have monuments of history, including of controversial figures, so long as you contextualize them. Lee honestly believed that slavery was the best thing for the black race, that blacks must be subjected to extraordinarily harsh discipline and that they were not on the same level as white people. He is not the hero that some people make him out to be.

he lost the war

but he fought for an ideal a lot of people at the time believed in and continue to believe in...however shitty it was.

his statues are in the south, to my knowledge he doesnt have any kind of recognition anywhere else in the country on the level of a statue or memorial.

Yea that's what I mean.

Like how Germany doesn't have big statues of Hitler but they at least mention in war museums and such why his ideals were wrong.

From a perspective of logic, I agree with you completely. It seems foolish.

People do a lot of foolish things though. They often honor historical losers. There are statues of Sanada Yukimura and Saigo Takamori in Japan as well. In the case of the U.S., though, it's because this country has always had a strong degree of regionalism. The divisions that were in place in the Civil War are basically still in place. The Southeast is politically and culturally very different from the rest of the country even today.
