We never did Asia, it was just not on our curriculum

"exotic" for us was if we got across the English Channel. Grim.

@Kami - I would have the sense not to call a black person that yes  I think people in the UK are more aware in general though. There are racism issues here, no denying that, but it's nothing on the scale of America.

Straight A's across the board in history, too bad it's not like Chemistry where I need it for everyday life.

...wait, I don't need Chemistry to be a physical therapist! PORQUE?!!

History class, first semester: Phoenicia, Egypt, Greece, Rome
Second Semester: I forget where exactly we started, but we did England, French Revolution, Renaissance, Sengoku/Sekigahara(oddly enough my teacher didn't know what Sekigahara was)/Tokugawa era/Meji Restoration/Industrial 1920's US/WWI-II
In my day we had most of that, but nothing on Sengoku or Meji periods, from what I remember :asia:

My daughter got some Sengoku in her history lessons, not sure what grade though. Got more than I did, at least

I think in high school, for a little while, we touched on people like Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII and some Spanish folks and so on. Whatever that whole era was called.

I got to teach the Feudal Japan/Edo/Meiji part of the class, it was fun. My history books even mentioned a few excerpts from ROTK and had one chapter on the YTR, but that was it as far as ancient china went

In my state we do the following for history in high school.

World Geography(boring, just a class about maps)
World History(it was literally a class about Europeans conquering everything, nothing really about Asian History, or anything other than Europeans taking over everything)
US History(boring)
Government(boring)

I feel cheated :hmmm:

History class would have been so much better if we had more variety.

I think the only thing about Asian countries I learned in schools was when we looked at the politics in China for Modern Studies one module.

It's pretty offensive, don't ever call a black person that :XD

I dunno, I grew up with an awkward view on racism because my family is so ethnically diverse cause my uncles would sleep with anyone. So I had cousins from various ethnic backgrounds and my uncles and even my grandfather weren't that shy about joking around with racial slurs...so me and my cousins always just took it as a joke.

It took a bit to get used to when we got older and went into school that there were some people who hated other people because of their race and the ways me and my cousins would joke with each other just didn't fly outside our family.

Got into a little bit of trouble as a kid...I blame my grandpa...he used to call me a wetback every day. :XD
My boyfriend's family like to call me china in spanish. It's just for fun though.

His dumbass brother likes to call be okinawa for some reason. :kurokan:

I call my bf wetback, beaner by just joking around and he makes fun of my people by calling them dark and all they do is wear sandal and be poor.

I don't take it as offensive though. :kosho:

this is pretty much how it went through out grade school for me too, just add in Economics (it was linked with Government).

Then in college I had to take American Government again.

The best years of high school were 9th and 10th. We covered all of those in the first group 9th along with Sumeria, China, and some Mesoamerican civilizations. The second group was 10th, though we did post-1000s India and like a single lesson on Korea too.

Yeah that was a problem we had. If we got to learn about anywhere else it was because it was part of the British Empire.

It was about what the British were doing there.

I'm not knocking English history too much. Some of it really is interesting, especially the Medieval stuff. Considering it was the country I was born in though I'm not bothered, I know about it. I'd rather learn about something exotic that I'm not likely to learn about every day.

Ooo that's upsetting. i had to study all the chinese history i could before we got to China unit. I think it was more modern, but no one learned anything because the teacher made it dead last. I was upset. i couldn't teach anyone anything to disperse the Chinese stereotypes.

People still think I eat dogs and cats afterwards the teacher said that Chinese people kill their second child, and especially if they're a girl. At the time I was 11 and felt uneasy of that. It's because it's not true though it does happen behind the scenes, it's not as often as you think. They have lifted the 1 child policy in China as of two months ago or something. Someone pronounced Mao Zedong, Mayo Zedong. I couldn't help but to laugh because it was my only reaction to the guy butchering his name when he could've asked me.

We learned a bit about Japan mostly the Edo Period as I remembered then there's some stuff in the modern days. People kept calling the people in the Japan educational video, Jackie Chan or my Korean Friend's name.

 I'm upset at how ignorant everyone in that town is. i could've taught so much but it was basically pushed aside.

EDIT: I remember learning about how the US government worked in my last year of high school.

I remember one elementary school teacher I had would bring in pachinko machines every once in awhile, and another in middle school would practice using his bokken while we were taking tests

That was about it for exposure to Japanese culture, other than reading about their WW2 involvement <_<

I took a whole class devoted to the history of the city my school was in junior year. Only real benefit was that we got to go on field trips sometimes.
