That made me think of many many years ago, when I attended lower secondary school and my literature teacher made us read a novel set in Wales with a character named "Angharad" ("How Green Was My Valley" should be the English title). That's one of my least liked books. Which is saying something, considering the hundreds of books I've read in my life. *** I like drawing feet (and even more drawing hands). It's fun =). |

OMM: Honestly, we should've stopped learning math in like the 5th grade or something. It's not like anyone needs to know how to add, subtract, divide and multiply polynomials, do algebraic expressions and equations, trigonometry, etc. I'm 99 percent sure that I will never use these things in real life and that they won't help me in the real world. Science is pointless as well as I'm sure that hardly anyone wants to be a scientist. What they should do is categorize people by what they want to be when they grow up and then teach them the things they need to know in order to succeed in what they want to do. Not everyone wants to be a scientist or a mathematician or an author or a historian or a coach. I don't need to know algebra or the origin of the universe to write a book. And someone who wants to be a historian doesn't need to know algebra and the like either. |

That is where you are wrong. I'm a person that doesn't like school but love learning. I find a lot of things worth learning, but school is just an absolute no. In order to write a book you need to know basically everything. Especially if you're going to create a fictional world with multiple characters and character development. Writing a book isn't just putting down words. Math is pretty pointless I'll admit that because I have barely found it useful in College at all however, if your character was extremely intelligent to the point where he must know math, you must go and research yourself on various math topics. Science is definitely not pointless. The reason a lot of us know so much is because of science. Science helps artists with drawing human figures. In this case biology. Even birds or animals or landscape. Artists need to know a lot of anatomy to draw a human body without it looking deformed. As for writing you really need science. Without it you can't even describe what your character is looking at. Let alone the terrain that you're describing. Chemistry helps you with mixes of chemicals, it's very useful when you're writing about someone trying to poison another character with a drug of some sorts. History is even more important. I mean Samurai Warriors/Dynasty Warriors wouldn't even had become created without learning history. DW still needs work but still the encyclopedia has taught me a lot. Samurai Warriors has taught a lot too. Especially with the characters created. Most of the subjects we learn in school are taught improperly. Which is why we feel like we don't need any of it. I'll agree not all of us want to be any of those, but the things we learn tie together somehow. To be an author or an artist, you do need to research a lot of things. I know this for sure because I write myself. I had to go research a lot of things, for my characters. You need to know that even if you were categorized to be an author, just knowing how to put words on paper, with proper grammar and syntax isn't enough. You need to know more than that. You need to have knowledge of the subject you're writing. You're young still. So i don't expect you to fully agree with what i'm saying because you think all of the stuff you're learning is pointless. Well sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, but one day all the things you learn will apply to almost everything in your life. Even your future occupations and dreams. ==== It's almost 4AM i get into these moments. |

That's not what you were saying. ![]() However that is true, school doesn't teach you everything, because we're supposed to learn a lot of it on our own or from experience. You don't need to learn to be an author, you just need to learn how to write and then apply knowledge and creativity. Learning to draw is one thing but applying your mind and ideas to create a picture is another. I can learn to play an instrument and learn music theory but am I able to use it to compose a song that speaks to people? It's really just that simple. Or maybe i'm just self taught all my life and I just think that. Sure we all need guidance in our lives but that's only half of the work, the other half is us who have to go and put our ideas and knowledge and abilities to work. What schools should teach is how to get through life. How to do things that actually help us in life. Like how to file taxes or something, or how to cook. How to balance a checkbook. Useful stuff. Alot of students in China can barely cook their own meals due to the fact that their parents cook for them all the time, while they always study. All they know is how to study, but they can't even boil water to save their life. Not all but some. That's actually true too. |

That just means you don't like school but you probably like to learn. I don't like it either. I don't like how intellectual ability is based on grades and numbers rather than what we can actually do with our brains. Sadly I don't know how long it will take for society to finally realize that school is a load of bull and should be changed to be better for everyone. |

When I was a kid I used to read random articles on Wikipedia when I was bored. I liked knowing new stuff, helped me write as well. I could draw from a large amount of knowledge and make my stories a little more believable either through just knowing how things worked or even just expanding my vocabulary. But I do put a good amount of value in knowledge, for both myself and other people. I tend to be far less interested in what people have to say if they just write off everything and remain ignorant. I never liked school when I was a kid, im in College now and I still don't like it. But I appreciate its goal, at least. Hate waking up so early...im so hungry, but I don't want to go into the kitchen and start making myself food and wake everyone else up... Edited by Mr. Kamikaze, Mon Apr 28, 2014 11:14 am.

Well I would prefer to educate myself on things. I've always been interested in documentaries about nature and animals and how restaurant chains work. I've studied history on a myriad of subjects by myself, read all the biographies of the presidents up to George HW Bush, etc. |

I'm in college expanding on my knowledge of Graphic Design and art in general. I hate waking up early just to go to classes. I actually hate classes, assignments and tests. However I'll admit I learned a lot in year. I knew more than whatever I self taught myself in. I really hope that I am able to get my certificate on Saturday. I remember when I was younger, I would just ask a lot of questions about history. I don't know how I know so much, maybe sometimes I stumbled on something and just start reading. I also watched a lot of discovery channel shows also some historical stuff. Maybe that's where I get a lot of my information but some of my info come from experience, common sense, logic and all that. I remember writing a story when I was young, I wonder where it went. It wasn't that good as I recall, because I followed a book I borrowed from the library. It was very...copy paste almost. It wasn't creative at all. ![]() Now I can write better now that I think about it. ==== Geez I should really sleep if i keep talking so deep. |
