Making a parody of horrible people is one thing, and showing a different side or perspective of it is another, but straight up taking one of the most horrific times in recent history and trying to make it look cute and cuddly is just disrespectful and in bad taste, especially since it wasn't all that long ago. My grandfather fought in WWII and would be rolling in his grave if he saw how the Axis and Allies were portrayed. It would be fine if it was just a normal anime and not trying to represent actual people and places that our families fought and died for. But of course, Japan has quite the reputation for glossing over painful history...

Jeeze. Now I just feel stupid I commend your grandfather though of course, you must be very proud ![]() I always thought it was funny though! Just watched it as I'd watch any anime or parody, not that it means that's how I actually feel towards a real and horrific event. How hot France and Turkey were didn't hurt, either ![]() I can see why you'd consider it disrespectful though. I thought you meant it was just trash as an anime, which I don't agree with. But your reasons are a different matter altogether, and I understand them

Yeah as an anime it's fine, but its historical references are insulting to a lot of people |

I wonder what DW would be like if it was a JRPG instead of an action game, with a FF style story and battle system... |

To add to the Hetalia discussion, the creator is kind of Anti-Korea(which isn't uncommon in Japan). The portrayal of Korea is done in really poor taste. Whenever I find out that an anime/manga I like is made by someone who is openly Anti-Korea, I get let down. |

Mostly only felt comfortable with asking for it because another friend of mine really likes the idea of it too. Is it? I wasn't aware of that. Damn that sucks, yeah, I can see why that'd be a bad thing then. Man. |

I agree with all this very strongly. I'll just add that that's what it basically comes down to- whether a person personally sees the parodying of this serious era in time as acceptable or not

Korea and Japan are in an awkward situation where they're both allies by proxy of the US so they should be on the same side, but at the same time they still hate each other for past transgressions and cultural patriotism, and Westerners tend to like both of them especially now that S. Korea (and not Best Korea) is gaining worldwide exposure from their pop stars (which Japanese think are a ripoff of their own) So Japanese public figures who sympathize with Korea are dogged by their own people as traitors, while those who are anti-Korea are dogged by foreigners as being racist. The main thing about South Korea's character is that he claims things that isn't his. This is rooted from the debate over Dokdo, idk what it's called in Japan. But it's an island that both Korea and Japan claim ownership of. It's a really sensitive subject, and to mock an entire country for something they believe is rightfully their's is really immature. And unlike a lot of Hetalia characters, his traditional clothing(hanbok) is drawn incorrectly. |

Never watches Hetalia, but I've heard about it, never like this though. I think history should be respected, but also laughed at sometimes, even in the case of tragedy. As for blatant Anti-Korean sentiments. Well there's no call for that, but again, I don't know much about Hetalia, and I don't know a whole lot about Japan-Korea relationships today. Joking about another country is good, but not when it gets all propaganda like I dunno, but thought I'd chime into the discussion

But when they mock my heritage and my home country in their body of work, that's when it's too far. |

In fairness Japan HAS screwed South Korea over a lot, but on the other I'd be inclined to think that if the governing body of Japan just apologized and admitted they did bad stuff, they'd be okay. But no, they don't, each time you think the two countries are making progress towards being true allies and not just trying to avoid America getting mad, some conservative asshole Japanese politician says something controversial or Japan/South Korea tries to claim an island literally no one lives on and it just... ugh. Edit: Why can't they just split Dokdo in half or claim joint ownership? It doesn't have resources, it doesn't have anyone living on it, just a big wang-waving competition between the two governments that serves to make Koreans and Japanese hate each other more.
