I just remember 5 being the number thrown around all the time.
I don't think she's quitting her day job. But it is nice to see an actress who doesn't just do "publicity stunts" for attention. A lot of actors and actresses espouse some cause or get involved with politics and then clearly come off as knowing jack-all about what they're talking about. Emma Watson stands out since it is clear that she did her research and was able to give insightful commentary, which I happen to agree with, on an important issue. Just a few weeks ago, in fact, Jorge and I had an argument on what it means to be a feminist and I raised many similar talking points. Edited by Rance, Mon Sep 22, 2014 8:19 pm.

^Her definition of a feminist is correct---though nowadays the meaning has changed. I consider myself a feminist, but I sure as hell am not a man-hating woman. |

Exactly. She understands what a feminist is and what feminism is. Some people think that feminist is a negative term, but it's not. The term has acquired an undeserved negative connotation that makes it seem like some kind of radical misandrist movement. A feminist, in reality, is just somebody who wants social justice for women. Everybody should be a feminist unless they are really bigoted. When I had my argument with Jorge, he kept saying that feminist was too exclusive and exclusionary a term, and he preferred to see himself as a universalist. I felt his argument completely misunderstood the concept of feminism, which is not exclusionary at all. You're not partial by being a feminist. If you want equality for everybody, you're a feminist as well by default. Edited by Rance, Mon Sep 22, 2014 8:26 pm.

Most self-proclaimed SJWs I see on the Internet are bigoted morons who represent exactly the kind of toxic crowd that Emma Watson commented on in her speech. Edited by Rance, Mon Sep 22, 2014 8:31 pm.

A lot of the loud mouthed feminists that people hate are the radical ones. The ones who exclude transwomen as actually being women(which they are!!!!), the ones who constantly talk about .75 to every $1 a man makes but forget to include that race is also a factor, and have transformed feminism as a means to make women on top. Feminism benefits women and men, and it should stay like that. Destroy gender roles, destroy sexism, destroy gender inequality. ![]() Though I do know a lot of people who don't wish to identify as a feminist because of the radicals and exclusionary feminists. Which I totally understand. They still support equality, just don't want to identify within the group because of the bad seeds. |

This is what I feel is problematic. So many people call themselves feminist nowadays and, in my opinion, totally miss the original point of feminism: social justice for women. Women being treated equally to men, receiving the same pay and not being institutionally barred from certain offices or professions: this is feminism. I think everybody who is not bigoted should identify as a feminist and not feel guilty about doing so. Just because you are a feminist does not mean that you have to agree with all other feminists on all issues. As an example, there are pro-porn and anti-porn feminists. You can guess where I stand on the issue of porn ( ). Regardless, however, I feel that if in their heart members of each group advocate for social justice for women, they are both feminists. I'm sure there are also pro-life and pro-choice feminists out there as well. I feel that feminism need not be endlessly tangled up with other political issues and acquire additional meanings as a result. In its original and purest form, feminism is a belief in equality which every sane, rational person should have.
