goddamn, it's like talking to a brick wall. If you don't like Wu then don't play them. Why make an entire thread on how their story sucks and their kingdoms sucks. We get it. They're the unpopular kingdom. We've heard that a thousand and one times before.
My opinion on Wu kind of varies from game to game. I actually liked them in DW8. I felt Lu Su and Han Dang surprisingly added a lot even though I didn't initially expect much out of them. I...didn't really like them in DW7.

Which thread are you referring to though, exactly?

It's the one where he asks that Wu needs a reason to fight. A few of us have spent hours and hours trying to come to a concensus with this guy, but....we just don't know what he wants out of that thread.

@Eni: Yes, yes, yes, we know, we know. Blah blah.

Yeah, I just gave my opinion early on in that thread and then decided that was enough.

I feel like Wu is fine the way it is. Rather than needing a raison d'ętre, I feel that the only thing Wu needs is more screentime. They need more battles, more of their enemies actually being main characters and more of a later era presence. They need their own Yuan Shao and their own Nanman, and their own Final Battle of Chengdu as well.

The last thing I want, as I stated in the thread, is for Wu to get a repeated one-liner like "benevolence" or "imbeciles."

It's just not about that. I understand where this guy is coming from and I agree on some of his points, but he just never seems to be satisfied.

Shu's actually decent in 8 imo, as was Jin. Really the only winner in 7 was Wei, though I swear if 9 is a Xiahou Dun fest again I'm gonna... :ken:

I didn't like either of Shu's Kingdom Mode stories. It probably doesn't help that a lot of my least favorite characters are the focal points of Shu's story while my favorites are supporting cast members.

It was better than DW7's Shu story, that's the nicest thing I can say about it.

I do dislike that each kingdom has to have a theme word they adhere to. I think that's why I'm fond of Wu. They're a whole bunch of things. TIGER BLOOD, family, rebellion, etc. They're not just one thing. Benevolence, work ethic, imbeciles, etc.

I will say Wei does a bit of a good job in concealing its "theme" but I think it's a poor idea to follow it as, frankly, they're a hell of a lot more benevolent than Shu, save that one time Cao Cao went hogwild crazy because his papa died.

Honestly, I was groaning after the thousandth time that word popped up in Dynasty Warriors 8.

I felt Jin's storyline was much better done in Dynasty Warriors 7, likely because Koei had more inspiration for Jin at that time. Their theme in that game seemed more like the notion that lofty ideals were stupid and that the best reason to fight was simply peace and unity. Their ending touched upon the idea that people shouldn't fight for the dreams of their forebears or predecessors either. They should fight for themselves and what they believed in.

In DW8, however, they got rid of that more nuanced concept and replaced it with, "Everybody is an incompetent piece of crap. We're da best!!!!" They then did whatever they could to indeed show that all of Jin's rivals were incompetent, which I believe was a disservice both to Jin and Jin's rivals.

^Ironically, I felt Sima Zhao was a more human character in 8 than in 7, where he was just a snotty copy of his daddy. In 8 he actually held sympathy and human emotions other than "Do I have to?"

I disliked him greatly in 8 because the game made it seem like all of Jin's problems were because of him and that Sima Shi was the true savior Jin needed. I felt like that was complete bull.

I understand your opinion though. DW7 kind of made him feel like Chinese Jesus, and he didn't really seem very human at times. However, I still preferred the angle they went with in Jin's story in DW7.

They did that in DW7 too didn't they? Like when Zhuge Dan and Sima Zhao have their first falling out and fail fighting Wu, Sima Shi swoops in and wow victory and praises go to the competent one.

It's a lot worse in DW8, though. DW7 allowed for Sima Zhao to have some character growth. He started out really irresponsible and in the shadow of his brother and then manned up and exceeded his brother.

DW8, conversely, makes him stay in the shadow of his brother and continue to screw things up perpetually. It makes Sima Shi out to be some kind of absurdly competent mastermind who could have conquered Shu-Han and Wu simultaneously in 5 minutes with no lube.

Well in 8 hypothetical Sima Shi does become savior of Jin (and gets the girl.............with no lube). :shosho: :shosho:

I think what gets me most are the endings.

DW7 ending is based on a scene from the novel and I think actual history as well. Koei, however, puts a twist on it to make Liu Shan seem a lot more insightful than he actually was. When the Shu music is played, Liu Shan is not moved because he realizes that Shu is gone. The dreams of his predecessors and what they fought for are not relevant to him. All of the dreams and ideals of the various warrior heroes of the Three Kingdoms, in fact, are no long meaningful to the people still living. What matters now is what is happening now.

The DW8 ending is Sima Zhao walking through a street somewhere with Deng Ai and Zhong Hui wondering where he went wrong.
