It accomplishes knowledge of the systemic oppression of black people with the latest and most public example. It's less about the specific case and more about why it even IS as it is.

And I addressed the riot issue in the actual topic.

Not long after Ferguson a 12 year old boy got shot for waving a "probably" toy gun around.

12 years old. Are you serious. What the f**k is the point in giving guns to the police

Why don't we talk about the millions of cases where 12 year old boys aren't shot by police?

And said kid wasn't even pointing it at anyone. Nope, gotta shoot him dead in the torso because you're so scared of a little kid. The US Justice System is ****ed, everyone knows this, they've seen enough crime dramas, why is it now that there's evidence that it's ****ed against black people that everything's hunky dory.

People saying "Not all cops!" "Not all white people!", and then "Oh wow ALL these riotous thugs breaking into stores, how disgusting!" and any attempts to point out it's just a few bad people taking advantage of the situation are met with ire.

America- the country where a woman who aborts a fetus is a horrible monster but a cop who shoots a surrendering black kid is an angel. Honestly. I've never understood the concept of "privilege" until now. But now I do. Ohhh-hooo do I ever now.

I'm not mad so much as I am sad that I profit off of oppression of minorities without wanting or asking to, and even sadder said oppression occurs. I mean I am a little mad, but I am more depressed at the situation.

It shouldn't happen at all.

Profit isn't the right term I suppose, as my privileges should be baseline. It's more everyone else being pushed down.

There was also another black teenager recently who was carrying a toy rifle in a store, had the cops called on him, and was shot.

I don't think anyone can deny that police have obviously profiled black males as risks that can't be taken. Giving that Jared Loughner, who has pleaded guilty to 19 counts of murder and attempted murder, is still alive today, and that Charles Manson got the right to marry one of his stalkers last week, but Mike Brown can't even live is downright sickening.

Just kind of amused by it, nothing else.

Like I said, that person I'm speaking of will think what he wants to think no matter what, so no matter bothering. No ill feelings.

The protests are absolutely necessary. I'm sorry that innocent people are getting mixed up into this and impacted by it, but if everyone sits around and does nothing, nothing changes.

The looters deserve scrutiny, yes, but the peaceful protesters (aka the majority) don't deserve to be lumped in with a few bad apples. These protests are important.

The protests are NOT necessary in California. Maybe in Ferguson it's fine, but it's pointless for protestors to surround office buildings in Southern California on the opposite end of the country.

They didn't have any protests for that poor six year old girl in Kansas City who was killed in a drive-by at a convenience store while she was buying bubble gum with her dad. :upset:

You're missing the point entirely Sakura, I'm sorry.

That was not a shooting by a police officer. It was not one of a series of incredibly similar incidents that have been piling up over the years. It's a tragedy, but there's nothing to protest about. No one thinks it should have happened.

In this case there's clear reasons to protest. How the system is stacked against blacks, how a cop killed an innocent giving himself up when cops have been known to peacefully apprehend mass murderers, etc.

Believe me, it's only recently I've started to believe fully in all of this. But I just can't deny the evidence any longer.

A loss of a life is a loss of a life.

Didn't realize it mattered who was the one who took a life.

@Kat: It's been fairly calm here as well. People more wondering when will the hurt stop. It not just bad that he was killed, but also how some are reacting to it.

Indianapolis has always been able to deal rationally with issues like this. It was the only northern city not to break out into rioting after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.

I do feel bad for people who have been hurt, same as when innocent people were attacked following Rodney King trial. I can still remember seeing that video of that truck driver in L.A. being dragged out of his truck and beaten just for stopping at a red light.

That wasn't his point at all. In simple terms, people are protesting against an unjustified death/people who think Mike Brown's death was justified (among other stuff). No one thinks that girl's death was justified. Absolutely nothing to protest about. Everyone agrees it was a tragedy and shouldn't have happened.

I never said that one was worse than the other.

Both deaths are horrible. Neither is more tragic than the other. The issue here is a social one- that's why there are protests.

There isn't an epidemic of little girls being killed in drive-bys. There is an epidemic of black people being killed unjustly by cops. Our society is not set up to facilitate the murder of little girls by cops (though ironically it is set up to facilitate their rape by old men in positions of power over them but that's another issue). It is set up, perhaps not intentionally, to allow cops to get away with murder of black people.

Edit: TY Bell.
