i dont mean literally nameless, but they're hollow, usually mute, stand ins for the player. Their engagement in the overall story amounts to hitting a bad guy and nodding along as some NPC talks to them. Bores me.

I don't HATE games like that, I have had fun with plenty of them. And some games actually do it very well, like Fire Emblem. I just prefer more story and character driven games.

Love skyrim and all, but I played dungeons and dragons for the first time this week. The imagination puts the game console to shame :asia:

Don't really care about story in a video game. There's never been one really worth mentioning.

If I want a good story with interesting characters, I'll read a book.

I can understand that, but for me I gotta strongly disagree.

Video games have just as much potential for great storytelling like any novel, comic, tv show, or movie. Sure like every other medium there exist time-wasters just for the sake of wasting time, but there's a reason video games are part of "escapist fiction".
----------------------------------------

My 2015 movie list:

May-The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron (Marvel)
June-Inside Out (Pixar)
July-Ant-Man (Marvel)
November 6-The Peanuts Movie (Blue Sky Studios)
November 20-The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2
November 20-The Good Dinosaur (Pixar)
December-Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

A little bummed at how the movies I'm looking forward to this year aren't until the middle, and how my most anticipated movie isn't until the end.

Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach have good basically nameless protagonists, though they only go by "the Rookie" and "Noble 6".

I played some of Reach, watched my brother play the rest. I think that's the same case as Fire Emblem, where the character, while nameless, as a very clearly defined back story and role in the story and is part of the narrative. When its like that, that's perfectly fine with me.

Blue Flamed Noble Six best. Grunt Birthday Party, Inclement Weather, or Heart Attack armor effects cool, too. Pestilence looks funny.

I hear this sometimes, but I disagree with it as well. There's a lot of shitty books with terrible stories and there are some great video games that have good stories. I definitely favor gameplay over story. I don't think I would really bother playing a pure visual novel for instance. It's too boring. However, I have played some games with good stories or at least stories which I liked.

Oh I've played games with stories which I liked too, FFX being one of them.

I just hate the recent notion that stories are the most important things in games, and as an extension "character representation" being more important than gameplay.

People are more worried about some meaningless names or traits of fictional characters rather than if the mechanics of the game are any good or not.

Everything has a place, but a video game's strength is in the game portion, the interactivity. If that's no good, you've just got a B-movie at best.

I love FFX's story, but the game itself is very solid with great design and polish. A game can have an award-winning story, jaw-dropping graphics, masterful music, but if the core game is **** then it's a ***ty game.

Also I don't think that story is all about the main narrative either. I think that the character development, universe the game takes place in, etc. are all part of the story as well. Even a relatively simple premise such as "a young dude and his party save the world" can be a good story if done right.

Aight, I agree with that. If a game isn't fun to play, it's ****.

I actually prefer world-building lore rather than a straight movie-style narrative in games, because it would encourage the players to actually seek out the "story" and discover it through interactivity rather than being railroaded through it, taking advantage of the "game" format

Dark Souls did this well, as did Phantasy Star Online. They both had great stories and characters, but they were told through talking with NPCs, finding secrets, solving puzzles and thinking rather than through cutscenes.

Treating a game like a movie is not doing the format any justice and not taking advantage of its potential.

I can kinda see your point.

Some games have way too much cutscene time and I do think "yeah if I wanted this I'd have gone to the cinema".

I do like a game with a good story, but if you're a good writer you'll find a way of incorporating the story into the gameplay, so we can be interactive with it and not just sit watching a fixed cutscene.

they're teasing the next RG Wing model, I hope it's Altron so they can update the mechanics on those dragon arms.
