I used to love having hair down to my ass, but I don't think I'd be able to maintain it. Not to mention pulling the strands out of the drain. Besides, I don't want anything covering my perfect ass :nope:

Yeah the maintentance was crazy. Having hair down to your ass seems to get a lot more hairs trapped between your cheeks

Then why do you wear pants?? :shifty:

Pirating kitchen supplies is also not okay. Don't do it.
Yeah, you'll upset our resident kitchen selling bots! They have feelings too! Maybe.

I hope we get to the point where we can pirate physical goods. And food.

Rev up the replicators! Post-scarcity society, here we come!

If replicators were ever created, capitalists and governments would do everything in their power to either keep them away from the public or destroy them. All means of societal control would be gone if the population got hold of them.

Things would get pretty messy. The government would probably become a lot more autocratic trying to deal with that ****.

How many people would still work at a job? What incentive would they have when money is worthless and they can simply dial up any material goods they need?

I suppose someone would have to sell the raw material needed for the replicator, so that could be a market. Service industries would still be necessary.

I don't think it would last long or even happen at all. Human society has been hierarchical since its inception. A device that could replicate any material good would completely unravel that structure. It would threaten capitalism, as you said, and also threaten the entrenched interests of the powerful, the wealthy, etc. It would be way too much of a threat. Every effort would be expended to stop it, much moreso than whatever meager efforts are made to stop things like the spread of nuclear technology.

But if people found out about it and knew it was being kept from us... I think that's a big enough breakthrough for an entire revolt of the working class. The promise of never wanting for anything again, especially food, would be a powerful motivator.

Of course the more society advances, the more complacent everyone becomes. Middle classes have too much to lose to risk anything dangerous these days.

Maybe, but I'm not sure. There are many ways that the people at the top with wealth and power could keep the common people divided or restricted. Class unity is a difficult thing. The promise of Communism appealed to similar ideas but the working class proved much too difficult to unite in most cases. If all else failed, simple force or the threat of force would probably keep most people in line.

And then with all this having been said, there are also questions about the actual technology itself. How would a replicator work? What kind of energy would it take to run it? If the technology was somehow installed as part of society, would there be costs associated with maintaining it? Or could the replicator replicate the fuel needed to run itself? Would there be limits to what could be replicated? Would it be essentially like cloning something?

I imagine a replicator would simply use raw material (blocks of plastic like 3D printers, various sheets of metal, or containers of proteins and organic material in the case of food, and use nanomachines to rearrange it into a facsimile of whatever you want based on pre-loaded blueprints. Perhaps it could even "scan" something and determine how to remake it and what materials would be needed.

There would definitely be maintenance needed, and there would have to be original sources or "masters" of everything you wanted to copy, because copies of copies degrade and lose information over time.

I guess even with all the effort expended, there would probably still be illegal replication taking place. There might be premiums placed on original items or on the materials or expertise needed to maintain the devices. There might even be government issued permits for specific use of the items by professionals. But I think if it became widespread and abused, there would be serious crackdowns that would go to great lengths to stop them, including violence if necessary.

Well there are a lot more people in the world willing to get something for free than there are people willing to risk their lives to stop them

And if someone is illegally replicating anything, you can bet they'll be illegally replicating firearms and body armor too.

You could potentially arm an entire militia if you get ahold of enough materials.

Would it really come down to waging war on citizens to keep them in line? When you've killed everyone, there's nothing left to rule.

People would definitely pay premium for "authentic" items, just look at the gem stone market to see what happens there. Or even the whole "organic" food craze.

I think that might depend on a few factors.

How good is the technology? Can it copy literally anything or are there limitations?

What is required to use it? Would there be a resource cost and how high would the cost be?

What efforts are made to nip it in the bud before it gets out of control? Earlier prototypes would probably have problems or limitations. If corporations and governments worked to suppress further research, development and production of the devices at an early stage, which I think they would, fully workable versions might not ever see the light of day.

You have a good point about citizens using the devices to replicate firearms though. If there was ever illegal use of fully-functional replicating devices, I agree with you that people would definitely use it to arm themselves or their own private militias.
