I don't like it when games are just t&a for the sake of being t&a, and the gameplay ends up sucking as a result. I was never a fan of the early DoA games at all. I won't play a game if the game itself is not fun/it sucks. The devs can cram in as much fanservice as they want and it won't interest me. I actually am not all that interested in Senran Kagura because the gameplay doesn't look appealing to me, personally. But then there are games like Shantae which are both sexy and a ton of fun. |

I recognize there are many women who do enjoy games like Senran Kagura and DoA. Hell, while I'm here talking about this stuff to you guys, I'm off on tumblr and skype arguing with alongside my friends who like these games to friends/other people who inherently hate such games explaining why they have their good, even pro feminist points. Hell, one of my best friends loves Senran Kagura and she's a chick. I just don't see the problem in trying to appeal to the women who don't like this stuff more, to provide better fictional role models for young girls. Much as I don't see the problem in allowing ecchi games to continue to exist. These things can coexist. We can have Lightnings AND Takis. We can have both variations of Lara Croft. They appeal to different people, given. But I think there can be crossover. Many of the Senran Kagura characters, as I mentioned before, are VERY nuanced and have deep characters that aren't easily compartmentalized into stereotypes (besides poor Mirai being the token small-boobed girl who feels inferior... but she has her reasons). Then you have Lightning Returns with it being partial dress up simulator, taking this perfect example of of an independent woman... and making her dress up sexy. But that's not required- she has perfectly non-sexual costumes as well. |

If a person doesn't like a game then they should move on and play a different game instead of trying to make it fit their standard. |

Point is I think we can all agree that letting female gamers feel more accepted is good. |

Yeah it would be awesome, but it'll struggle to take off when money is in the man's pocket. Generally gaming is male, generally the males are straight and generally the male will have the bigger bank balance. Profit will intervene with creativity and creativity not needed where there's no profit, so long as money has such a big effect on life.

Accepted how? Every female gamer I've come across has been accepted. Outside of those, "I have a vagina treat me differently" types. |

Separating this into a different post:
I don't either, but it's a problem when games try too hard or try to generalize that all women like certain things. Also, a crappy game is just a crappy game. Ultimately, gameplay is more important than any of this gender argument bull****. If a game is ****, it's **** whether it is trying to pander to sex appeal or trying to present "better fictional role models for young girls." Edited by Rance, Wed Mar 4, 2015 12:07 am.

That's actually a false statement. Females make up to at least 50% of the gaming community. The reason why society seems to think gaming is male dominated is because a lot of spaces make females feel excluded and not welcome to actually discuss video games, making it seem like they are in the minority, when they are just as much as an equal. Not to mention, if you make a video game more encompassing to a group that usually feels excluded in terms of representation then that's going to boost sales, not drag them down. It's not like people are asking for a huge change. I, personally, just want female characters that are actually worth remembering, female characters that are given relevance, female characters who go through their ups and their downs, female characters who are given as much attention as their male counterparts. I'm not asking for every game to have a female protagonist, and for the plot to be focused on a male hating society. I'm just asking for representation. Everyone should be able to see a character in media that they can relate to. I cannot relate to a female character who is given depth equivalent to a sheet of paper. A lot of men fail to realize representation, because men are very much well represented in video games. While there will always be male characters that are terribly written, there is a much more likely chance for a man to pick up a video game and see a character that he can see himself in than for a woman to do the same thing. This isn't really that hard of a concept. |

I'm totally fine with that. But as far as protests against big tits or skimpy outfits, I think they're a waste of time. The reason those things exist is because they sell. As LDZ pointed out earlier in this conversation, the bottom line is money. Money is the root of it all. |

Various games do this already though. Instead of complaining that games don't do these things, support the ones that do. |

Society as a whole puts too much value on unrealistic appearances for both sexes, whether it's a 10/10 handsome man with abs of steel and loads of $$$ or a 10/10 gorgeous, well-endowed woman. Normal people will never fit into mainstream popular media because let's face it, most women would not be interested in watching 50 Shades of Beer Gut any more than guys would be interested in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Plus-Size edition.

I'm not denying that it is already being done, but there is still work to be done. And it's not like people aren't supporting those games? Games like The Walking Dead, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect have a large female fan base and are very much well supported by said fan base because they feel included. While Dragon Age, and Mass Effect do not appeal to me gameplay wise, I would recommend them to anyone if they are looking for an all-inclusive experience without sacrificing overall quality. I'm very much sex positive as well. I don't care about games like DOA, and such. You can very much have female characters who are sultry, and meant to be "sex icons" while still very much giving them a persona of their own. It isn't unheard of, one of the first sex icons in video games, Lara Croft, did it herself for her first couple of games, and then again in the latest. |

This is right on. As far as making female gamers feel more welcome, I have no problem with that. I think the best way to do this is to just not really draw attention to gender at all. I personally don't really care if a gamer is male or female. I played with a lot of women in League of Legends. League of Legends, incidentally, has been accused of both having too many skimpy, objectifying costumes and not enough skimpy costumes, according to the developers. I think there were actually many likeable female characters in LoL (other than Nidalee), but the game did not shy away from swimsuits and skimpy outfits. Despite that, it still has a pretty substantial female playerbase. edit-I have to stop ending my sentences with 'at all.' Edited by Rance, Wed Mar 4, 2015 12:23 am.
