That's a good point, Ae. I'll consider that, as I just thought through growing up that gaming was a boy thing generally (don't really ever remember a girl talking about games except my sister) and because of society saying so through the so-called analysis. But I do agree with whoever and witness that science tends to crush these ideas and polls false all the time.

Society as a whole puts too much value on unrealistic appearances for both sexes, whether it's a 10/10 handsome man with abs of steel and loads of $$$ or a 10/10 gorgeous, well-endowed woman.

Normal people will never fit into mainstream popular media because let's face it, most women would not be interested in watching 50 Shades of Beer Gut any more than guys would be interested in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Plus-Size edition.

:asia:
But that doesn't necessarily mean it's okay, and it's why people want some sort of change to happen which is why this discussion is even a thing.

I think gaming has changed with time. I actually did know girls who played videogames when I was a kid, but I don't think there were as many as there are now. I see, both irl and on the Internet, a lot of women who play video games nowadays. They're definitely not a rarity. I think that can only be helpful to the industry because it means there are more potential consumers. It also hopefully means there will be more women working for the industry in the future, since many will have the experience and desire to do so.

Although.... there is something I wanna bring up.
Emp, if you don't wanna bring up gender at all, then you have to recognize that gamers who use sexualized insults ("bitch", "****", etc. or making implications based on gender) or catcall female gamers should be called out, yes?

I'm sure you do, btw, it's just I've seen other people use that argument before, but then it turns out they themselves constantly bring up gender as "playful banter" which isn't really playful at all.
... I don't understand how bitch isn't censored and s*** is.... >_> wtf...

Which I definitely recognize, I think you'd have to be in denial that not only video games but the communities themselves have become more inclusive of female fans. But there is still very much a problem with people not wanting "feminazis to ruin their games", when literally we just want the writers to actually do their jobs and to do them better and to stop making females living blow up dolls.

Power fantasies. Some people do these things to inject their fantasies. Male and female but females always get slack even if they are designed by females.

When I say I don't bring up gender, like, I literally mean that. When I played with female gamers in various games over the years, I didn't really draw any attention to their gender, so far as I remember, because I didn't really care. I definitely didn't go around calling people ****s or bitches. Obviously I don't think people should do that. Unfortunately, a lot of people who play multiplayer games are toxic in general. People just decide to be assholes because they know they can get away with it.

Got it then, just wanted to clarify! :)

I do wish there was some way to weed out assholes like that though. People are gross.

Should have more girls like Bayonetta. Designed to be sexy, she's also a possible role model and a very confident woman. More importantly is the protagonist, heroine, and has a female rivalry.

Edit: Forgot to mention, also an awesome game!

Toxicity is really based on communities more than gamers as a whole. For Call of Duty you'll need thick skin to play online while like Destiny, you'll find more friendly environment outside of the PvP. Competitive gameplay just makes people assholes.

Should there be a debate thread about this or should this matter just be kept here?

I never played a DoA game before, but I'm so interested with this entire conversation. :D

There can be more characters like Bayonetta, as long as there are as many female characters who are her antithesis. That's pretty much my entire argument. I should be able to see a variety of female characters who fill a variety of roles, not just the same trope time and time again. I should be able to have an ample selection of females, main characters, supporting characters, warriors, housewives, strong, weak. I want it all.

:goodpost: This. Diversity is key.

I think, as an aside, it's worth pointing out it effects acting work as well. At the voice acting in video games panel I went to at Katsucon, it was pointed out by some of the actresses that there are so many more male characters in games (at least, western games, Japanese games tend to be more balanced) than female characters. So, the women VAs get less opportunities for work and when they come up they have to compete with basically every other female VA in town- if not ALSO women who aren't professional VAs but are more familiar with the stage or live action. That's... less important, admittedly. But why it's worth bringing up here: It also reflects how many female characters are in games at all...
