It better not be bad out tomorrow. I have my driving test.

Yes, I'm about to be 28 on Thursday and I still don't have my license. Mainly due to lack of a vehicle. Don't judge me.
Driving is awful. You've missed nothing.

You must tell me what that .gif is from oh great French Overlord.

I remember my "N" driving test (the "N" in Canada allows you to drive unsupervized, but with certain restrictions. I was functionally free to drive anywhere after having the N though), I had to retake it twice because first time I was just a nervous wreck (I knew I failed pretty much as soon as I had to brake suddenly after missing a stop sign ON THE WAY OUT OF THE TESTING STATION (First turn) :OMG: ). The Italian or Spanish middle aged man testing me was nice enough and was sympathetic to my plight, but I just made too many mistakes.

2nd time was a 40 something Filipina lady, I thought it would be better but NOPE she was a b*tch and was just so curt and annoyed, and I forgot to slow down in a school zone. which in Canada is basically an automatic fail IIRC.

3rd time lucky: It was a REALLY OLD white guy (like in his 60s!) and I thought "awww sh*t I'm screwed again" but he had been joking around with his younger colleagues on the way to the car. As I had been practicing driving daily for another month before attempting the test again, I was finally confident enough and the only mistake was a minor parallel parking issue! I had my "N"! :XD :P

Man did I have to work for that happy ending. u_u

Vancouver, British Columbia (where I took my N test... WOOO!)

For Vancouver its because there is only one major highway to downtown from some fairly major suburbs (Langley, Surrey, Coquitlam) and EVERYBODY has to go on either Lougheed highway or Highway 1 to head to the city centre.

Don't get me wrong. LA is far worse. Just sayin'

Come on, that's not even fair.

The Right Honourable PRIME MINISTER (thank you very much! Merci beaucoup!) Stephen Harper, PM since 2006.

I'll leave it at that. He is, as par for the course in democratic nations, a love him or hate him affair. However, I will give him this, this guy likes to stick to his positions, for better or for worse. He doesn't flip flop much (compared to other politicians).

He probably would have lost a lot earlier if not for Canada's multi-party (as opposed to US' two party) system.

@ Emperor Yuan Shu: Not only that, the leadership of the Liberal party of Canada since 2004 or so has been a bit of a disaster, to put it nicely. First we had Paul Martin, a good financial minister, finally pulling up behind his vitriolic best bud Jean Chretien and the liberal sponsorship scandal hits them hard. Whereas the 1993, 1997 and 2000 Canadian elections had been COMFORTABLE Liberal victories, the 2004 one was a Liberal victory, but only just. By 2006 it had all blown apart, and Harper became PM, becoming the first Western Canadian PM in a LONG time (he was born and raised in Ontario, but spent his adult life in western Alberta).

Since then, the Liberals have had terrible leadership. We had a Quebecois guy (Stephane Dion I think?) who was terrible at English. Now, I don't mean it in a racist, mean way. Jean Chretien was another Quebecois guy and his English wasn't GREAT, but he came from a poor background, he worked DAMN HARD to get his English down and he was a careful, crafty and effective politician. Dion was none of these things. While Quebec is a HUGE political issue in Canada, the fact remains that the majority is still Anglophone, and Dion's language skills just were not up to snuff.

Then they had the even more disastorous Mike Ignatieff.... (Harvard professor, good author of books on warfare in Yugoslavia, humanitarian missions and international politics, but had no good ideas for domestic issues)...

Jack Layton, leader of the "third wheel" NDP, was a charismatic leader, but had cancer and died in 2011. His successors have not been able to carry on his legacy.

Harper has had his issues for sure, but he could point to Canada not being involved in the Subprime mortgages crisis (due to both Harper's innate caution and to finance minister Flaherty's own caution) as proof of his steady hand. He has resolutely denounced Putin's invasion of Ukraine, refusing to even shake hands with Putin (:OMG: Canadians loved him for this though. :goodjob: ). He set up a bipartisan committee on religious freedom, and has privately given word of concern to China on this issue many times.

For his con side, he has limited the power of the press to interview him (limited questions), he changed the uniforms of the (almost inconsequential, but we humans are a sentimental species) Canadian military BACK to the WW2 British style (only for ceremonial uniforms, combats are still modern, of course), etc.

Yeah, none of the other political parties boast a leader that could oust him just yet. Justin Trudeau, current leader of the Liberals, is YET ANOTHER love him/hate him guy. (Flip flops too much, smokes weed, son of a love/hate Prime Minister, etc).

@ Kuran: As for my personal opinion.... I'll let that slide for now.

@ Kuran, You're also Canadian?

Well, yeah. ^_^ Its important to stay informed about the country you live in. It may not be the "ancestral homeland" (China for me, Korea for you?) but its still important to know a little political stuff.

My short opinion is (before I get flamed to hell LOL) Harper is PM because a lot of his opponents have really been duds (other than Jack Layton, who was a charismatic leader but he already had cancer when he was engineering the NDP to a historic 2nd place finish in 2011, then promptly passed away). Do you see Justin Trudeau as our PM? I sure as hell don't. Mulcair? He's no Layton, it would be tough for him to beat out Trudeau (name recognition alone due to his famous dad) and Harper (better the devil you know than the devil you don't).... When and if the conservatives get some truly major scandals on par with the Liberal sponsorship scandals of the mid-2000s, (and I believe sooner or later with the conservatives too), some other party will win and get a minority government.

The right wing Canadians all vote conservative while the left wingers get split in two (liberals are centre-left /NDP is *actual* left). So they always split the vote, and the conservatives come down the middle and win. 2015 is a Canadian election year, and I think Harper will win one more time, just due to people not trusting Trudeau. We'll see, though...

P.S. One last note, to speak of Harper's relative lack of flip-flopping:

Stephen Harper supports Israel to the hilt, and makes no bones about it, despite this position being quite unpopular with the Canadian mainstream. He just don't care dawg. You may love or hate his politics, but you must say that he is VERY consistent on what he likes and doesn't like. It may be boring, but at this stage of world history where all kinds of sh*t are going down all over the world, I'd take a boring, safe leader over a charismatic but unstable one any day. (*ahem* Justin Trudeau *ahem*) The Canadian Federal Liberal party needs to retool, I think it will still be tough for them to win *this* election. But if they retool and come up with a better leader (McGuinty? Broadbent? Who knows?) I think by the next election the Liberals will finally pull it off. Canadian mainstream is centre-left, which is the Liberals basically, but with such duds at leader its REALLY HARD to trust them...
