I think if Koei hired better translators, or spent more time on their scripts, the dialogue could easily be improved. Aside from the "officer defeated" quotes, I get the feeling that the Japanese dialogue is translated word-to-word in English without really deciphering the meaning, so I imagine there is a lot lost in translation. I wish we could stop hearing the same line recycled in every single Warriors game, I mean there is always a video about Cao Cao rambling about ending the chaos and always a line where Liu Bei is harking about the right thing to do. Koei just needs to use a bit more artistic freedom, if you ask me (I'm not suggesting they change the meaning of the dialogue, just alter it a bit so it doesn't sound like we've heard it for the 100th time already!) I prefer the old way of defeating officers where the officer don't say anything and you just get a dialouge across the screen that said "Zhang Fei has fallen to my blade!" like Dynasty Warriors 2 or do it like the PSP volume games have done it where they have the voices disabled. That way you don't have to put up with the annoyance of hearing the same old repetitive voices of Zhao Yun's "Another has fallen to my spear!" or Ma Chao's "I fight in the name of justice!" At least the way Dynasty Warriors 2 had it done, I actually enjoyed the game without all the fancy officer defeated quotes everytime I killed one. I agree with Seraphil, I don't think anyone cares how many you slained in the name of justice or who can provide Lu Bu a decent challenge. |

Hey, I actually LIKED the 'Tekisou, uchitottaze!' or whatever, it was short, sweet, and to the point.Only place I can think of where that was annoying was in SW1 with Sanada Yukimura, where he'd scream it like every time. As for my opinion on this, I vastly prefer the Japanese dialogue options because I like the sound of the Japanese language over the sound of English. It just feels more exotic, and the voice actors seem right for the characters mostly. Some of my more favorite seiyuu are in the Warriors series as well, like Masaya Onosaka who does Zhuge Liang and Zhao Yun...Kazuya Nakai does Xiahou Dun and I think Dian Wei...and of course I can't forget Jurogi Kosuta, who does a fantastic job on Nobunaga. That's not to say there aren't some excellent English voice actors as well. I've grown partial to some of DW5's actors for Cao Cao, Lu Bu, Zhang Fei, and Cao Ren.The rest are alright, but nothing special IMO. I wish Koei would go back to offering up JP voice options. It's not like they fill the disc up with their games now anyway, so what's stopping them? |

Excellent point. ![]() Btw, I think it's something like "Tekishou Uchitottari." I like it too. :'( The last DW game with Japanese voice option on PS2 was DW4: Empires (DW5 had it in JUST on Xbox 360). Maybe DW6:E... |

Well, in regards to the later games on the PS2 not having it could contribute to the space needed and the space provided on the CD/DVDs themselves. However, anything on the 360 or PS3 not having English/Japanese voice option is just a downright shame. There's PLENTY of enough space for it, Koei. Don't take it out, and make ALL of us happy. |

No way, PS2 DVDs CAN hold voice actors and alot more, you'd know that if you check the DVDs capacity. I never done that before but I been told KOEI uses so little of the space it got. Even WO2 used 55% of the DVD ( I was shocked when I knew that, with all the bloody number of characters the game has). But yeah, KOEI never used space it got, even in next gen- games. Something they fail at I assume due to wanting the release the games fast and the like. |

Okay then, Koei is just being lazy and stupid about not having the Voice Acting options... and here I was trying to defend Koei. Silly me. |

Repetition does not always = bad. Uniqueness does not always = good. Giving characters' unique lines that are annoying and make you not want to play the character is way worse (which is what my examples were trying to show) than everyone having the same simple to-the-point declaration. "Tekishou uchitottari" is what they actually declared in battle when they felled an enemy commander(it's used in Japanese historical dramas all the time.) Plus, it actually sounds cool as compared to quite a few of the dub lines... Heck, even "Enemy Officer Defeated" doesn't quite sound right. Except SW2 dub Sakon's. His is the best enemy officer defeat quote ever. Edited by Seraphil, Jan 27 2009, 01:07 PM.

I just think it comes down to personal tastes in regards to Japanese vs English. I'd prefer to have both options available to please both sides. I still hold true to my belief that, no matter how bad the unique saying is you'll eventually learn to get over it/block it out (I hate Kanetsugu, but even I can ignore his victory chant by now). Just as a can block out the same phrase being screamed over and over again in Japanese- after awhile they all just sound the same, and when you're focusing on objectives you really don't need to hear the saying unless it's important to said objective. You like one thing, I like another. All of our issues could be resolved by Koei putting both the original Japanese and better written English options in the game. I won't deny, I do like the Japanese phrase as a whole, but still, if it's uttered enough times in a row it loses its flare and just kind of starts sounding the same. Just different voice actors and few variations. I'd love to hear SW2 in Japanese, if only to hear how the new characters sound. I purchased the Japanese version of DW6 so at least I could hear the ones I never heard before... I saw videos of the Japanese SW2 (and I remember Hideyoshi sounding a LOT deeper than he did in SW1... he got a new VA, right?), but still, it'd be nice to hear how they sounded in Japanese. Curse you, Koei, and your inability to put both options there. |

I personaly think Tekishou uchitottari is kind of annoying. Why do we even need officer defeated quotes anyways? I wonder if modern day soldiers do this sort of thing... *soldier shoots at the enemy, soldier wins* ENEMY OFFICER DEFEATED!!! THERE GOES ANOTHER ONE!!! A'RIGHT! IM AWN FIRE!!! CHALK ANOTHER ONE UP TO ME! add THAT to the tallyyyyyyyyyy! its JUST THAT simple Ohh, I LOVE getting my hands dirty! Tekishou uchitottari... yea...nope >_> Edited by BuddHA0991, Jan 28 2009, 04:46 PM.

Nice point, even though the VA isn't perfect, and even if it's terrible to some people, I don't think it can be that annoying. Since you're focusing on the game and objectives and the like. Hell, even repeating that quote alotta times when defeating lots of officers isn't that annoying, well except SW1 Okuni and WO1 Hideyoshi >_> So yeah, I agree with you, KOEI won't lose anything if they put both sound options especialy that they have no clue how to use that space they got. |

Funny thing. I just watched a video of X-Play reviewing Samurai Warriors 2. Anyway. I'm actually pretty fond of the SW2 english dubbing. I can't say the same for Warriors Orochi though. What they did with Hideyoshi, I don't know. :| But as for the DW/SW series', the dubbing is fine. I love the dubbing in the fourth DW. Awesomesauce. Very expressive. |

I think it's because of the surfer voices guys like Musashi and Sun Ce have Or because it kinda gets reptetive hearing Lu Bu rant on about getting a challenge or Cao Cao talking about ambiton and all that stuff but the actual voices are great Just need to work a little bit on the script |

So as we can clearly see from the poll results at the time I am writing this is that DW5 and SW2 are the prefferred games when it comes to voice acting. Very understandable, really. We are all very much used to the DW5 voices because they were used in so many games. Some of the new DW6 voices took a little bit of getting used to. Personally, I prefer when the voices don't change much, because I find the voices as unique as the characters themselves, and everyone knows the diversity of characters is what makes Dynasty/Samurai Warriors so great. Samurai Warriors 2 got good pretty good reviews when it came to voice acting because it had wonderful cinematics. Compared to those in DW5, they were amazing. Many DW5 movie cutscenes are pathetic, I find, because of mediocre graphics and awkward gaps in diologue. Editors try to match the English speech with the Japanese facial movements and it often sounds choppy. SW2 didn't seem to have this problem, surprisingly. The diologue was very smooth and the VAs did a great job. It almost seemed like the cinematics were redone and synced with English. |

The VA in all KOEI games is awful because it doesn't feel real . When you hear the voice that voice must be able to make you feel that the actor / actress is really in that situation and that does not exist in DW. Look at MGS 4 or GTA IV and you will know what I mean. |

Because some voices are really horrible. Take Xiahou Yuan in DW3 for instance, that was horrible. Sometimes though, when they say the voice acting is bad, they really mean to say the lines are bad. I remember watching a review on Dyansty Warriors 6 that criticized the 'voice acting' though if anything, they then proceeded to show a certain corny quote a dozen times, so sometimes it is just to say the lines are bad. But there are definitely times when there are some voice acting for some characters that, while impressive, really doesn't fit them. Edited by xkhaosxmagmusx, Sep 17 2009, 10:18 AM.
