So, I noticed something strange today while I was played SW2: XL with my roomate. Apparently, whenever she plays with me she never gets the point of the stages, mainly becuase she doesn't catch (or outright ignores) the quotes and changes (even the freakin mid-battle cutscenes) in battle. And we were playing easy/normal mode, mind you.

Now, I usually play multiplayer with some of my friends, but whenever I do I'm the only one whos laughing or making a comment about a quote or paying attention to the shift of battle.

Me: "Crap, our main camp is getting owned! Go help them!"
Them: "What? Huh?"

It's like whenever I turn around and ask them, "Did you hear what she/he said?" they always say "No, I wasn't paying attention." Even when I play with my cousin (whom I've played ALL my Koei games with) she never catches anything, it's so bad that I have to tell her where to go to complete the missions...

So I guess I'm wondering... am I just playing with people that can't read/listen and game at the same time or is this normal? o.O

I have this same problem when playing DW with my brother, he is completely oblivious to what is going on around him...so I have to be the one to save everyone and complete the missions, while he just goes crazy and kills anything in his path...all without having a clue what he is doing -_- silly silly person -_-

The same thing goes for some of my friends, they especially went crazy when they were playing WO2 Dream 8 on Chaos with a Tenbuized team. They ignored Liu Bei.

I guess it depends on how much the person likes the game. I know a friend and I coordinate pretty well in Musou Orochi, but I pretty much have to do all the strategic progression when we're playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy because my friend stumbles through a lot of it without having much of a goal in it (which makes gold/health runs harder because I have to keep repeating instructions like 'stay away from that chest, it's got a bomb'). Personally, I always have a series of goals (above and beyond 'get through the stage alive'), so I've never had any complaints about anything like this.
I've gotta break out, I need a way out,
I don't believe it's gotta be this way,
The worst is the way that
In this room I'm suffocating

I have similar type problems when playing with my best friend. The main context of the game is the gameplay and not the story, unlike rpgs. So its more likely for them to ignore stuff like that.

My main problem is my friend never has clue where to go. I always tell him to look at the map, but I guess the map is just jibberish to him. He has no idea where he is on the map, and cant even figure out that he is the green arrow. He just randomly fights and moves forward to whatever direction. It was a big problem with levels where there is a big emptyness of no enemies in certain spots, like toward your base and he would always end up running around there in the opposite way of where he was supposed to go. Since he never understood, he never cared to play the game.

That was always the problem with my friends, when ever we go to play video games, its either I lead and shoove in a Musou disc in order to play, cause they would never suggest it.

Pretty much the same here when playing a Warriors game with my younger cousins.

Me: Alex, the base is this way!

Cousin: Kill first!

And sometimes it's that problem that gets us all killed in Chaos Mode. LOL

For me, it's unavoidable to ignore the commentary and battle actions because they pop up right underneath my character. But I guess I'd have to agree with the fact that I'm an actual fan basically sums up why I pay attention. There are times when I zone out though, and all I wanna do is hack and slash, but I've played the battle so many times I just do certain actions on instinct.

I only have this problem during multiplayer. My friend doesn't bother to read any messages which appear on the screen and I have to guide him if he doesn't know what to do. However, I am exactly like him. This is because we like to talk about other things while playing and since I know what's going on in all stages, I always know what to do next.

I never have this problem only because I don't have anyone to play with so I don't get distracted easily from the context at all. I just have a tendacy to forget certains lines after just hear them. I end up writing down so on paper so I have them for reference when posting them on the forum or for personal use. :hehe:

That sounds familiar since I tend to do the same. It wasn't always that way, though.

When I first played DW4, I was a wandering idiot and couldn't follow the arrow on the map :XD I just remember hearing the crowd cheer when our morale increased, but I never paid attention to the messages/missions

Huh, so it's not just me and my playing buddies. 8'D Yeah I guess in the end all it really matters is how much you are into the game. I remember back when I was just starting out DW3 I didn't pay much attention to those things either... but then again I was like 11 and didn't pay much attention to anything anyway. XD;

Now that I think about it, another one of the reasons that my friends can't concentrate is becuase fighting takes up all their concentration... they can't even use the character combos at will. o.O Granted they can USE them, but they have no idea which combo goes with what buttons, which is weird to me since it's not some complicated execution (seriously, squares and triangles, how much more simple can you get?).

Nah, I usually don't have any trouble catching up with what is said during the game, that's like 99% of the time.

I do have times like these though, only when it's a hard game/stage that needs focusing so I may lose attention of what's said, or even my health guage (I hire someone to tell me if it gets low  )

EDIT: 1,000 post, woot! :ph43r:

It is not at all uncommon to ignore your surroundings or get tunnel vision while immersed in combat. It's actually not all that bad if you've played a previous DW game because the stages and objectives are dangerously similar.

This is exactly why I can never play these games with my best friend. He's not new to DW, but he doesn't exactly show the same attention to what's going on. I'd have to tell him what to do. While it got better when he bought DW5 for himself, I can't play with him because we're not on the same level. I'm a die-hard fan and he's a casual fan.

That, and he's TERRIBLE at pronouncing the names of the characters (even though they say the characters' names multiple times throughout the game).

For me, 90% of the messages are not important, I just have to keep an eye out for the important "The main camp is in danger, assist immediately" one.

But sometimes I get in the habit of ignoring a lot of messages on purpose because they get a little redundant. So once in a while, I may miss that ever important message and end up losing the stage. The game doesn't help because it decides to tell you every single detail that is going on in the battlefield, which causes the messages to lag behind too. You can pause the game and see one of your allies missing on the map, then see his defeated message sometime later, because the game wanted to tell you that his morale, as well as every other allies' morale, were dropping.

Silly how in the older DW games, if an ally was defeated, the game will tell you twice!

"Lu Bu's forces has been routed by Xiao Qiao's forces!"
"Lu Bu's forces has been obliterated!"

In my head: (You just said that!!!)

I have this habit of "selective listening" when I play, meaning I only listen to certain messages and ignore all but the really important messages. If I don't want to pay attention to a certain detail, I don't because there's just a detail overload sometimes.

I should consider myself lucky. My two best friends get into the battles and characters. Well... one will play, but not pay attention to SW, only DW. But my g/f gives it no thought. "Where do I go!? Who do I kill?!" Lol. At least she tries. :P

I fall in the same category as Nasser: sometimes I ignore even the health bar when I'm doing something that needs a lot of attention (hard enemies and targets) or, on the contrary, if I'm playing without too much enthusiasm (for example when I played just to get the proficiency to unlock the damn stage 27 and Shin Orochi in Maou Sairin).
