Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce![]() Koei managed to knock out 2 games which have been hotly anticipated by fans within the space of a week. Needless to say, with my birthday being on the same day as the Strikeforce UK release I immediately rushed out to purchase the game. I also found a lack of decent reviews anywhere so I thought I'd give one a go. Story: The game is loosely based on The Romance Of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong and when I say loose I mean it. While previous installments in the DW series have stuck fairly close to the novel, here it is only characters and events that are the same, afterall, I dont remember any huge dragon monsters or transformed hyper warriors in the novel. Another difference from the novel in Strikeforce is that each of the 3 kingdoms has the same enemy: the infamous Lu Bu Gameplay: After choosing a character from the very extensive list, take whatever you once knew about DW and throw it out the window. The combat here is much more refined and Koei has pulled out all the stops to give fans a much different experience and I must say, it works very well to an extent. As most of you will know, most of the combat in the Warriors series takes place with the characters feet firmly on the ground. However in Strikeforce you will purchase upgrades for you're character and WHOOSH, you're indulging in aerial combat with a Super Saiyan enemy officer (more on this later). Another major change is the ability to wield 2 weapons which adds a greater degree of strategy to the game as each weapon will do different levels of damage to a different enemy type, Koei has the interest of the player at heart and added a neat little lock on feature to show the level of damage you're equiped weapon will do to the currently locked on enemy (green being the highest, red being the lowest). Another major over-haul is the inclusion of Fury transformations which also have a major impact on how the game works. Basically, they give you're character a massive stat boost and some of the coolest transformations in video game history. It is also a necessity that you transform before using a Musou attack, and boy, do these pack a whollop in this game. Koei has also evened the playing field as generic officers have this ability. Koei has also changed enemy behaviour, gone are the days of enemies circling the player aimlessly. Enemies now have a greater degree of "courage" and will attack the player much more often. This actually makes the game much more fun. Characters are now much more customizable and can be armed with a large amount of orbs (which boost attack powers) to Chi abilities with enable flying, great agility etc in both normal, Fury and Musou variations. Skilled players will be able to adapt these to different situations which adds more depth to the game. My major gripe with Strikeforce is that it was hailed as a multiplayer game, this is true to an extent but it does not make use of the Playstation Network. Therefore you cannot connect to players around the world, instead you are required to have 3 friends with the game in relatively close proximity. This was just downright depressing to find out and spoiled my overall enjoyment of the game, as some missions (especially Hu Lao Gate) require some degree of teamwork as Koei appears to have drawn inspiration from Ninja Gaiden at points and has thrown in huge bosses and a massive amount of unblockable attacks. Graphics: Well, for a PSP game, the graphics are absolutely spot on, character models are superbly detailed and the game manages to handle the fast paced combat and huge bosses with absolutely no graphical hitches. The battlefields and towns in this game are also superbly detailed and Koei has certainly put the work in, the individual bricks in walls are visibile, leaves are visible on trees and idividual shoots of grass are visible. This game really shows what the PSP is capable of. Sound: The sound heres nothing really that new, if you've played DW6 then you've probably heard it before, however they're still pretty good. The clang of spears and swords is still a pretty striking (no pun intended) noise even on a PSP. The BGM mostly consists of remixes of the BGM from DW6, personally I thought most of the music from DW6 was pretty weak but a lot of people really enjoyed them, if you were on they'll you'll love these remixes. Character voices are also the same as in DW6. In most reviews the voice-acting is heavily criticised but I can't really find fault with them so if it ain't broke don't fix it. Verdict: To put things straight, this is one of the best games on the PSP. If you own Sony's handheld then this is an absolute must have. The new game mechanic work superbly and Koei had thrown in just enough to keep the series fresh and alive. The game also offers a fair depth of replayability due to the massive amount of characters and quests on offer as well as DLC installments. While the game is brilliant, it is kept back from true glory because a couple of obvious but not insurmountable flaws: Some enemies use some very cheap attacks which will have you smashing your PSP in rage and the "multiplayer" is a let down. However with these faults in mind I can still definitely recommend this game to fans of the series and newcomers. Overall Scores Story:[/b 7/10 Gameplay: 8/10 b]Graphics: 9/10 Sound: 7/10 Final Score: 8/10 Edited by l00mer, May 4 2009, 04:03 PM.
