I figured I might as well set up a topic about what people thought of Castro. Specifically, his association with human rights and censorship. |

Are you talking about the current President of Cuba, Raúl Castro, or his brother Fidel Castro? I'm glad to see that Raúl Castro is making things different in Cuba by removing all of the things that used to be restricted like microwaves and cell phone usage. Also loosening travel restrictions too. However, it doesn't change the fact that the guy has had many people killed including close friends and loyal generals. |

More so the government as a whole. Personally, I think the main problem with the government is mostly its restriction of contradiction against the government in any form. In other words, it's absolutely mandatory that you kiss their asses to live there. The government does not entirely restrict freedom of speech, you're still allowed to make fun of Americans or be critical of a movie, you're just not allowed to say anything against the government. Despite this {among other things} the living conditions are actually pretty good for a communism. Plus people there seem to be rather fine with living there, so I don't think Castro did a terrible job at ruling the place. It's just that he made decisions that oppose many moralities of other people which has gotten him a lot of beef. I mean, hell, at least you're guaranteed a job there. A lot of people around here could only wish for that sort of thing... Edited by DrewTheDude-Dono, Tue May 5, 2009 12:32 am.

Cuba has one of the highest literary rates per population on earth, so Castro must have done something right. I think that compared with other communist regimes(North Korea as a glaring example), Cuba is doing relatively well despite the whole "trade embargo" thing which probably should be lifted by now. Maybe things will improve in certain areas in the future, who knows

Econimically, perhaps, Castro's regime has done much to help Cuba's constituents. It's just the intolerance factor and the inherent flaws of communism that I worry about.

Well, there you go, Cuba has changed for better or worse since the Cuban Revolution in the '50s, and Castro's the one of the people who helped effect that change. @AK049: "The share and share alike" thing works in practice, but not in theory, so you probably have a point there |

Haha! Castro. I especially liked when Fidel screwed over Jimmy Carter. "Any Cubans want to come to America are allowed!" So castro throws all the criminals, insane, and disabled people over to America. Epic. |

Castro played the Americans. Information should not be screened or filtered. If the administration is successful with such screen and filtered information, then they are successful based on nothing more than propaganda. Almost every nation has this to an extent. Human Rights just get's into hypocrisy, I'll leave that be. |
