Gameplay-wise, SW2 Empires blows the other two out of the water. As for appearance, it's not nearly as good as DW5E with regards to the looks, for both CAW customization and having cutscenes.

For looks, DW5 Empires is the prettiest, what with having the more visually customizable CAW(yet looks is really the only thing you can customize here...) and cutscenes for Ending Edit and such.

DW4 Empires is sorta halfway between them and does most things right. The Empires part of the gameplay is somewhat limiting but a more fulfilling experience than DW5E is.

In essence, DW5E is for looks, SW2E for gameplay, DW4E for a decent midroad.

I liked the CAW for DW5 as well. But SW2 was a more comfortable gameplay. Dunno how, but it was.

This really doesn't belong in the DW6 Forum, so moved.

As for the question, I think I enjoyed SW2: Empires the most. DW5: Empires had more CAW options and more modes, but something about the gameplay seemed a bit off to me. DW4: Empires was good gameplay wise, but it lacked all the extra modes and options of the later games.

Well i must say, gameplay wise and the whole empire and controling everything has got to go to SW2E But with the story and characters and land and just about everything else must say DW5E. I have not chosen though because they are both pretty great in their own way and i do not see a clear winner. Also the quadruple musou thing in SW2E is just awesome!

I've only played DW 4 empires so i'll pick that. Reason is because only DW game I ever played creating own character and also was the only game to become a leader of a force of your choice. The empire game was both fun and interesting to play.

As for the question, I think I enjoyed SW2: Empires the most. DW5: Empires had more CAW options and more modes, but something about the gameplay seemed a bit off to me. DW4: Empires was good gameplay wise, but it lacked all the extra modes and options of the later games.
Let's see if we can find what's off about the gameplay in DW5E, and why it's not really as fun as SW2E.

Free Mode- In SW2E, you can use whatever tactics you've gotten in Empires mode. In DW5E, you can't. Thus, free mode is kinda boring.

Gathering of Heroes Scenario- In SW2E, you have a great deal of customization. You can give a single force multiple territories, which is useful for guaranteeing a showdown with one of the major clans, if that happens to be what you're after. I happen to love challenging the Oda, the Takeda, the Tokugawa and the other big clans. Another useful part of this is giving yourself 2 territories to start out with. This isn't necessarily for protection, but to speed things up just a bit. I dislike going on offense with crappy first or second level weapons, and the increased money from having two territories helps me upgrade my smithies faster.

In DW5E, you're relegated to one territory per force, so Wei, Wu, and Shu are not very likely to establish themselves. It never has the same effect as the showdowns I've had in SW2E where the land ends up divided almost Sekigahara-style. In addition, since you only have one territory, you're forced to fight offensive battles with crappy weapons and, most likely, no horse, which brings me to my next point...

Items & Stats: I truly dislike DW5E's item system. Producing items that last only one battle was a very bad idea. SW's skill system is far superior due to being able to keep the skill once you've learned it. I've been through Empire mode 5 times already. I'd prefer not having to re-earn EVERY item, including stat boosting ones. Stat boosting items should be turned into skills like in SW2E, and special items should have special unlocking conditions that you only need to do once. Although, producing items doesn't become much of a problem once you get to the one gameplay feature of DW5E's that I actually prefer (aside from CAW mode)...

Peasant Rebellions- I never play a despot, or even a neutral ruler in SW2E because of these. They are so tedious and annoying that I ALWAYS play a noble and just ruler, just so I don't have to partake in these dumb battles. DW5E's system is much for fun, though, the negative effects of being a tyrant could stand to be a little more severe, to balance the overpowered policies a tyrannical ruler has access to, but at least you aren't discouraged from deciding the fate of your subjects in different ways.

I agree. And I forgot to mention one other thing that makes DW5E inferior to SW2E

Allied AI is really friggin' stupid in DW5E.
