Well,One-Eyed-Dragon and I managed to get most of the materials needed for our costumes yesterday when we went out with Nutella yesterday. (She was a great help. ^_^ We learnt many cosplay tips from her.)

Anyway,I managed to buy knee-high socks for my Ranmaru costume, but I need to dye it purple. Is there any alternative method I can use to dye it purple without buying purple dye to do it?

Diluted purple paint. I know acrylic paint is resistant to waching when it dries; not sure about fabric paint since I haven't tried it.

Get purple paint, and dilute it by adding water.

kitsune: regarding your mitsunari headdress, has it occur to you to use an old trucker's cap as the base? snip away the top and the peak or visor, and leave the front to stick that "metal" plate. it will be convenient to stick the side horny bits also.

@acktosh: Thanks for the tip,I didn't think of that. ^_^ One-Eyed-Dragon's going to make it out of cardboard,a headband and elastic cord, though. We have no idea where to get a trucker's cap. Thanks anyway.

kitsune: the trucker's cap is really common. it's what these days malay boys wear a lot, the one with an adjustable strap at the back. ashton kutcher made it popular. i think you know what i'm talking about? ;]

one-eyed-dragon: no i haven't, but i've done relative research on most sengoku musou 2 characters.

@acktosh: Yeah,I think I've heard of it.Never mind,we've just bought a headband for One-Eyed-Dragon to use for his headpiece.
Anyway,do you know how to make Ranmaru's katana sheath? It's supposed to be "fake",as I won't be able to put the katana into the sheath,I'm just going to wear it on my back.

Remember the problems with Kanetsugu's shoe-covers? I think it depends on where the points of movement in your feet are. If the section you are covering is over a joint and will bend, I will pick the vanguard sheet as it has some allowance for bending; if it is safely away from a joint then I'd use the corrugated cardboard for rigidity. I thought foam might be better?

Foam doesn't keep the colour well. My Okuni dangly things' colour wore off but it gave a beautiful faded colour... hrmz... Thanks Zaku

You are right about that, but I'm not thinking of craft foam specifically...maybe the common, absorbant type of foam used in chairs. Since the colour is going to be absorbed into the material, it won't get scratched out easily.

*needs help* I'm looking for some tasselled rope for my ranmaru costume (he has some round his waist) and I keep seeing curtain tie backs...not good. :( I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or knows somewhere that does some.

Xiaoqiaorocks: I would recommend going to any fabric store, you should be able to find rope tassels similar to what Ran has in his costume. You might have to weave a few ropes together, and then attach a large tassel on the ends, but I think you can make it work, I would imagine any generic fabric store would have those supplies. ;)

I thought about that, but I'm just not very confident about that. Then again, it'll be a first, so I should give it a go I suppose. *was looking for an easy way out*
Thanks!

I'd start with four lengths of PVC piping, each peice a little thinner than the last and fit them together into a tapered pole...hopefully it won't be so rigid it won't bend a little.

Use either pipe sealer to make them stick, or maybe small connectors can be used--it doesn't matter if they leave a little ridge because you can just cover each joint with modeling material (clay, paper mache' whatever works for you). You'll probably want to cover the entire thing with the same material (so paper mache is a good idea) so that when you paint it, the coloring is even (And PVC is a pain to paint).

For the yin/yang sign at the end of the handle you might try using a thin connector between the black handle and red part of the pole, and then building up a flat medallion shape (or covering something the right shape and size).

GOOD LUCK with the bit on the end, you'll probably have to build some sort of support into the base of the pole and then sculp that weird shape somehow.

Anywyas I'm no master weapon maker but it's a start.

Thanks!
@Xiaoqiaorocks: Try to get a thick enough rope and spray it purple with a purple fabric spray :)
That would be the easy way out.

Home improvement stores will have them. So in the USA, try Lowes or Home Depot, whichever you prefer, if you're not in the USA you might have to try an equivalent store. Also plumbing stores should have PVC pipeing (it's just an industrial grade plastic after all). and the correct bonding agents or connectors to get it together. You might also try gardening stores, though this is less likely to have what you need.

I highly suggest taking the best quality picture of the lighting rod you can obtain with you to show them what you're trying to build, this will help them help YOU find the best material, widths and lengths to buy.

Failing that, there's always internet ordering, but usually PVC has to be bought in small lots or bulk that way, so unless you're going to use A LOT of it...shoot for an home improvement store.
