Okay, so before you were to able to decipher all those awkward looking Chinese names way back when you bought your first Dynasty Warriors (OR Japanese names if your first KOEI game was Samurai Warriors) game, did you have any funny nicknames you gave to certain characters in order to identify them? Do you still use these "nicknames" even though you learned to the proper names? If so, why? If so, share 'em here! I know I created a few back when I first got in DW3... Dian Wei: "Mr. Clean" If you don't know who Mr. Clean is, then take a second to look him up on google, no doubt you'll see a striking resemblance to the "coming evil." Zhou Yu: "Haradrim," "Pretty Boy" Okay, so the way Zhou Yu ran in DW3 reminded my brother and I of the Haradrim enemies from the Lord of the Rings Return of the King videogame... LOL. So we called him a Haradrim... maybe some LotR geeks will know what I'm talking about. XD Pretty boy is self explanatory. Zhuge Liang: "Easy Chair", "Wispy Mustache." These both originated from my weird brother. Back when DW4 had the R3 Taunt attack, my brother said ZL looked like he was floating in an invisible reclining chair... yeah, we're strange. Wispy Mustache also came up because ZL has such an immaculately trimmed mustache! Zhang Liao: "Frenchie" You know something about him just looks FRENCH! The mustache, even the outfit... wee wee! LOL. Sun Ce: "Sensei" I said sensei cause that's what it sounded like when Zhou Yu said his name in DW3. Pang Tong: "Sleeping Mexican." DW4... sombrero, poncho like outfit... sounds tired... hence "sleeping Mexican." (not meant to offend anyone, by the way!) Sima Yi: "My Fictional Boyfriend" Okay, that last one is a joke, honestly!! ^^; So if you have any, I'd love to hear them. I'll leave it at just DW for now, I'll have to think of the SW ones later... |

I could go on all day.
Zhang He - Vega. He was my first DW3 character because he reminded me of the vain claw-wielding warrior from the Street Fighter series. Xu Huang - Tony the Tiger due to his grrrreat axe. Cao Ren - Buster Beetle (his shield looks like a carapace and he busts people up), Rockman, Shorty, the Blue Bomber (after WO gave him a crowd bombing attack). His DW6 nickname is Lunchbox. Blocky metal armor + giant fork = you do the math. Ieyasu Tokugawa - Cannon Head. Real original, I know. Dian Wei - My friends also called him Mr. Clean. I referred to him as Bald Bull. Xu Zhu - Sir Tubbsalot. Requires no explanation. Magoichi Saika - Quagmire for hitting on all the ladies. Dong Zhuo - Wario or Captain Crunch, depending on whether I consider his face or his hat more important to his appearance. Lu Meng - Scruffles thanks to the 5 o'clock shadow. Shingen Takeda - Chewie. He just looks like a furry long-haired creature. |

Ahahah, it made me laugh reading both Manji_Ninja and Rydain comments about Dian Wei, since I called him "Mastro Lindo" (nothing else than the Italian name for Mr. Clean). Another nickname I used (and still use) is "Scarafaggio Gigante" ("Giant Cockroach") for Lu Bu, obviously for his appearance, moreover I found it funny that Dong Zhuo has many quotes insect-related ("Insect!!", "Another insect, crushed!", etc.). Then (thanks to the Net) I knew that Lu Bu is called "Cockroach" by many other people, and the kanji "chan" of Diao Chan is similar and read in the same way as the character for "cicada", so I found it even funnier. Oh, Lu Meng was "Mitsurugi" for me XD (Mitsurugi from Soul Edge, a game I loved), and Pang Tong and Pang De are "Panettone" and "Pandoro" XDDD because they sound alike (for non-Italian members, panettone and pandoro are the typical Italian Christmas sweets). Pang De is also "La Scatoletta" ("The Can") for his heavy armour, nickname that he shares with Cao Ren (who, from DW5, has become "La mia scatoletta preferita", "My favourite can", since I like him a lot and more than Pang De). In couple, they're "Le Scatolette" ("The Cans") XD. I won't tell Zhuge Liang's nickname because the literal English translation wouldn't be as effective, moreover it can be a bit offensive ^^;. Laughs at Ma Chao, Ma Dai and Ma Su, because in Italian (non-literal translation) they sound like "Hey, hello!" and "Come on!". Mmmmh, I don't know if I'm forgetting something. |

I had a couple that stuck to me Sun Quan: Quanie This is more of a personal nickname I gave him due to my "small" obsession for him. <3 Dong Zhuo: Mr. Potato Head! Just look at his face, it's all winkly like a potato. I bet if you threw his head around like those hot potato games, he would just laugh "Gahahahaha!" all the time. Sakon Shima: Suckon This was more a name I suggested for Fayt as a joke when we did the name change a while back. It was also one of the names I keep pronouncing like this anyways. Lu Xun: La-goon I thought him as a bit of a goon in 5 so I gave him this name. Wei Yan: Crocodile Weiyandee I took this name from the movie "Crocodile Dundee". I thought this fit his DW6 look nicely. Zhou Tai: Supertai! Zhou Tai has always reminded me of Superman ever since he sported the cape in DW6. Also, he is known for saving Quanie's from danger just like Superman saving Lois all the time. I can't think of anymore that I had randomly used on the characters when playing so I will leave it to this. |

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this... well I kinda thought I couldn't be, 'cause I've seen some posted around the forum, but I think it's fun to get a comprehensive list started. @Insp. Chin: Hahaha, go ahead laugh at me anyway. I'm surprised you don't have any character nicknames...
Bwhahaahaha, MASTRO LINDO! That sounds so funny!! It's just by the sound of it, "Mastro Lindo" sounds like it's this really manly name (at least I think so), so the fact that it's Italian for Mr. Clean is funny. I like the way Mastro Lindo sounds. Sera, please tell us the one for Zhuge Liang! xD @Rydain: Hehehe, I like Lunch Box, that's cute. I remember reading that in the Cao Ren thread (I tend to read more then post these days). @Skode: Thats true but it was based on the way he ran with his sword, not his looks. @Kazxjun: Suckon was one I had for Sakon as well, because it sounds like they say Suck on Shima!! I always want to say his name Saikon Shima, that would be easier to say... Now Chin will tease you for the "Quanie" nickname, lol, j/k. Some Samurai Warriors ones: Hideyoshi: Saru 'Cause it's Japanese for monkey... big stretch, isn't it? Ieyasu: Turtle guy In SW1, his armor looked like a turtle shell... well I thought so. >_> Hmmm, well that's all I guess I came up with for the SW cast. Probably because I already knew all their names before I got the game... when I first bought DW3, it was my first Koei game, so all of the characters were new to me. |

Sima Yi: Si-mah Yeee It's hard to explain how to pronounce this, but it's basically saying his name in a appropriately silly voice. Xiahou Dun: Peewoe This is from my brother. He noticed that, sadly for Mister Xiahou, he and I share exactly the same hair cut (DW6). Thus we now also share a ridiculous nick-name. Zhuge Liang: Dave After trying for hours to pronounce his name correctly, he was rechristened and left at that. Lu Meng: Scruffy McGee Guan Yu: The Beard |

I've got nothing original here just some bastardization of their names Lu Bu: Bu Bu bear. (Yogi was missing... )Liu Bei: Bei Bei. (Just coz i like playing him doesn't mean i respect him that much. And it also ticks my bf off >=D) Zhou Yu: Yuyu. (my sis and I have been calling him that for some time before we learnt that it's a kind of crab in Malay.) Yoshimoto Imagawa: "It". (his voice! his mannerisms! omg! Makes my skin crawl!) Sun Quan: Quannie or Sun "Yes Mommy" Quan. (self-explanatory?) Sun Jian: Daddy Jian Sima Yi: *Joke in Hokkien which I cannot write here coz its vulgar* (Comes from his Japanese name Shiba Yi) Dong Zhuo: Daddy Dong. (Blame fanfiction. XD) |

Eheheh ^^, "Mastro Lindo" is just a little less usual way to translate "Mr. Clean" in Italian. The most usual would be "Signor Pulito", but I think "Mastro Lindo" is far better, since "mastro" gives the idea of someone very skilled at something (like "master" in English), and "Lindo" reminds more of a real name ("Pulito" couldn't be a real name, while "Linda" is a normal female name). The nickname for Zhuge Liang, er, how could I explain... I guess I can write the exact nickname I use, even if it can be a bit offensive, since I use the "politer" version of the original idiom. Well, I call him "Faccia da Sedere" XD (literally "Bottom Face" or "Bottom-like Face"), but I don't know how I could effectively translate the meaning. I only say that every time I see Zhuge Liang's ambiguous, arrogant and pedantic expression behind his fan, I can't help thinking "Che faccia da sedere!" ("What a ...!")! With all due respect to Kongming, of course XD! <- For those who are wondering, I don't hate him at all, on the contrary, I like him and find his expression funny. Moreover, his English voice actor is great, the tone of his voice fits perfectly Zhuge Liang's expression and personality. |

 Hahaha ^^ Good idea for a topic, Manji_Ninja thanks
Everyone give funny nicknames lol Here's some others nicknames (translated French-->English, so maybe not exactly the same ^^'''') DW --> Sun Jian : The "Marseillais" in DW3 (lol don't know how to translate the nicknames in English XD) because his voice acting has a Marseillais accent [Marseille is a French city, famous for the special & unique accent Marseillais when people talk, Marseillais is the name of people who live in Marseille] Xiao Qiao : "Kokon¨¦" because in DW3 each of her attacks, she says "Kon¨¦" (or something like that XD) "Kokon¨¦" It was so funny lol XD Xu Huang : The Favorite because he's my brother's favorite character. Xu Zhu : The Sumo because he's big, strong & nice ^^ Zhang He : The Elegant, because he & his moveset are elegant ^^ Zhuge Liang : "Zhuge" because it's shorter to say than "Zhuge Liang" but normally we should say "Liang" XD SW --> Kunoichi : "Kuno" because it's shorter. Sakai Magoichi : The Don Juan (Don Juan is a character who run after ladies, drag all the ladies he see...) WO --> Orochi : "Oro" it's shorter XD I think I've forgotten some but I have already written some of nicknames ^^'''' so it's maybe enough for the moment ^^'''' |

I had a few more but these reminded me of other characters which I end up calling them by those character names. Lu Meng: The Mitsurugi of Dynasty Warriors. I swear he looks almost like Mitsurugi of Soul Calibur. Gan Ning: The Hwang of Dynasty Warriors. Remember Hwang from of Soul Calibur? They both have the sword, hair, and muscle tone to be twins. Ling Tong: The Maxi of Dynasty Warriors. Yeah, I swear most of these characters are like the Soul Calibur characters. This time the fighting stance, nunchakus, and attitude sums it up. Huang Gai: The Zangief of Dynasty Warriors. The hair, beard, and red clothes make him as similar as Zangief of Street Fighter. Magoichi: The Irvine Kinneas of Samurai Warriors. If your familiar with Final Fantasy VIII, then you will know what kind of person Irvine Kinneas was. The silly cowboy with the gun at hand and flirtatious way with girls that always end up not going his way, one way or another. |

I don't have any terribly exciting nicknames but here are a few: Zhuge Liang: Chuko. Like the wade giles version of his name because the first translation of ROTK that I read used the wade giles system for names and Chuko amused me. Dong Zhuo: Tung Cho. Same reason as above. Ranmaru Mori: Ran-chan. Because of Enjoji (from Kizuna) calling his lover Ran-chan <3 Cao Pi: Cow Pie. ...doesn't really need an explanation XD I can' remember if there are any others. I'm generally not consistent with nicknames. Thats why more poor cats have tons of different silly names I call them. |

Pang Tong - Yoda. When I first used him in DW6, I was like..."holy heck, he's exactly like Yoda." Seriously, he's short and ugly, has terrible posture, uses the force (wind), has a green theme, fights for the side of justice, and carries a knobbly wooden staff. Plus he's all wise, but is still killed fairly early on. Zhuge Liang - Ch'ko Konming. My friends use this, but I really don't. It's a cross of his romanized and style names, mixed with their weird attempts to pronounce it correctly. Huang Gai - Mr. T! Totally.
You name your cats? I just call mine "cat."

Xiahou Yuan - Othe-Clone. For some reason my friend and I believed he resembled Otho from the Beetlejuice movie.
Xiahou Dun - Just Dun. Zhang Liao - (Still to this day) Loin, cause he's shot in the loins by an arrow in the book. Haung Zhong - Old Man Skippy Pants Zhuge Liang - Too Gay Liang Ma Chao - Kain. (Yes from FF4) Sun Shang Xiang - Super Saiyan 10. That's what SSX reminded me of. Jiang Wei - Madmartigan. Val Kilmer played Madmartigan in the movie Willow. At one point he's wearing a dress for a disguise and it gets all torn up and looks like he's wearing pink/purple pants, much like Jiang Wei. Lu Meng - Scruffs. Facial hair. |
