First off: I made this anime, because of one thing...Code Geass.

This was the last anime I finished...and again it touched me.
I don´t know how many times I had tears in my eyes during animes.
I never had those feelings in a movie or a TV show.

Personally, I think it´s the fact that storys in animes have, most of the time, fleshed out characters. They take their time to show the characters they want to show. They are so lovable that a departing from them hurts. Also an anime takes you in a different world. And when something of the fascinating world is being taken out, or is comepletley over, it´s just sad.

And what makes an anime good for me?

Plot. Characters.

I don´t need super animations, orchestrate music, blood, sex or cool fights.

I just need a plot, or fleshed out characters.

For example, even if the Sengoku BASARA´s plot isn´t that much of a genius strike, I just love the characters.

That´s the reason I like animes like Death Note or Code Geass, also Gungrave, Cowboy Bebop, etc.

They have a good and powerful story, but also characters you can understand and feel with.

But as long as one of those things are done right, I pretty much like the anime.

So what are your reasons?

What do you think are the reasons animes are so popular and touch so many people?

And what makes an anime good for you?

Same thing as you, but I think both at least decent characters and a great plot or vice-versa is needed. Another key element is that the time and technologies are either beleivable, or completley out there. No in between.

Really good anime for me has an underlying message or alot of symbolism that explains things as much as the storyline does. Other than that it can't be too "happy", there has to be alot of drama and death in order for it to be truely great, thats why Gundam tops my list. G Gundam is the exception as there is very little death in comparison but the scenes of those people dying are deeply touching and moving.

what makes an anime enjoyable to me are extremes. it either has to be really serious and violent and stay consistent throughout or it has to really ridiculous and hillarious. i also like any anime that resembles the theme of 1984 or that just has a depressing and dreary atmosphere, which in most cases, takes place in the future. characters in anime dont stand out all that much to me, because onece youve seen one hero or villain, youve seen them all.

3: nt too draggy, like naruto, DBZ, bleach etc etc, u can name it
4: NO FILERS, unless filer storyline is good, EG: rozen maiden
5: not too much flashback, like bleach etc etc(duh u can name it too)
6: fanservice and ecchi sence(optional)
7: MOST IMPORTANT, CUTENESS OF FEMALE CHARACTERS, if not cute at least storyline must be good

Humor, Action and Durability. These are all I require. I don't need a fullproof plotline or awesomely animated characters, aslong as I go:

"Hahahaha!"
"Wow! That's cool!"
"I'm going to watch more tomorrow!"

Any anime with fillers gets axed by me, it's acceptable for an odd episode (like in Excel Saga) to be a filler, but not an entire chapter or series.

An appealing art style is required for me, I'm kinda picky.

Humor, whether it be intentional, infantile randomness, or just gorey in such away that I find funny (Elfen Lied does this).

I'm also generally against a series with an excessive number of episodes. Once it reaches 100, I lose interest.

Nice topic, I’ve made a list (from the order of importance), that must be in an anime series for me to enjoy:

Story: The most important. If the story isn’t interesting enough, there’s no point following it even if the animation is superb.

Character design: I think that’s the next important thing. If something isn’t attractive when you watch it, you’d lose interest pretty quickly.

Background: 99% of the time I read the manga before I watch the anime, and if the manga was great, I would most likely watch the anime, just to get a feel of the adaption and enjoy the animation side. Or simply to see what cool voice actors are behind my favourite characters.

Story (sub-point): For a story to be good (for me), it must have:

-A decent power system (organizations with proper rankings)*
*Example: One Piece (Yonkou, Shichibukai, etc)

-Romance (that’s just me), awesome character designs simply go to waste if the story does somehow romantically involve them in a way or another.

-Comedy + Seriousness: A good mixture of the two is just perfect. During some scenes you can have laughs and in the serious fighting scenes you can enjoy blood/violence and all the other cool effects.

Do NOT want to see in an anime list:

-Personally I really dislike sad endings, especially when the introduction and main parts were so good, only to get to the end and the main character/good guys dies.

If you watch such a good series all up until the end just to see the main character die, there’s not much point (I won’t mention names as it will create strong disagreement amongst others, lol).
