Personally, I wonder why there hasn't been a Roman game made yet. I know about the upcoming Troy game, and that isn't a bad start. But, I really wish there was a game for Rome. I saw the sticky topic about what time period should Koei do next, and this is kind of my answer, without totally reaming that topic. Anyway, tell me what you think of my idea so far. I'll edit it when I get more ideas and flesh it out better. And, if you have ideas, obviously voice them.

VERSIONS

V.0.1 - (8-9-09) I first introduced the idea. No edits have been made, unless there is something glaringly wrong, or there is a spelling/grammar error. Obviously, this isn't a complete first version.
V.0.1.1 - (8-10-09) Added a small bit to the battles section and a couple of officers to the officers section. Also, I edited the already existing battle descriptions to add consistency.

FRANCHISE CHARACTERS (edits possible)

(Note: These aren't the most fantastic bios in the world, but I tried to keep them as brief as possible. Also, most names have been trimmed down to a two name system, largely because I know that's how Koei would likely do things, due to many reasons. Some of these people have four names or more.)

Julius Caesar - Quite possibly the most famous Roman in history, Julius Caesar was the hero of the Gallic Wars, and rose to major prominence afterward. He fought against Pompeius Magnus later for control of Rome. Eventually, Julius Caesar was given more and more in the way of prestige and power, more than some of the Senate was comfortable with. As a result, Julius Caesar was assassinated at the hands of Marcus Brutus, Gaius Cassius, and other Senators on the Ides of March, 44 BC. (Similar characters - Cao Cao, Oda Nobunaga)

Marcus Antonius - Always loyal to Julius Caesar throughout the Gallic Wars and through Julius Caesar's quest for power, Marcus Antonius was a great military commander and eventually became Julius Caesar's right hand man. He was known to have a fiery and sometimes reckless personality. After Julius Caesar was assassinated, Marcus Antonius, along with Octavian Caesar, avenged his death at Philippi. Eventually, he became enamored with Cleopatra, and they came to blows with Octavian Caesar at Actium. As a result of Marcus Antonius's loss at Actium, he and Cleopatra ended up committing suicide. (Similar characters - Xiahou Dun, Shibata Katsuie, but younger in both cases)

Cleopatra - She was the last meaningful pharaoh of Egypt. Before her days as sole ruler, she shared power of Egypt with her brother, Ptolemy XIII, and others in her family, which eventually led to civil war. When Julius Caesar got involved in the civil unrest in Egypt, he took Cleopatra's side. She ended up gaining the sole real power over Egypt, and Julius Caesar and she ended up having extended personal relations in Rome. Once Julius Caesar was dead, she headed back to Egypt. A few years later, Marcus Antonius met with her for diplomacy, and ended up becoming enamored by her. Events following that led up to the Battle of Actium. (Similar characters - Zhen Ji, Nohime)

Vercingetorix - He was the de facto head of the Gallic forces in the later stages of the Gallic Wars, having united the tribes against Julius Caesar. Although he would ultimately fail, he was still hailed as a major hero, and his superiority in generalship was unquestioned. When he surrendered to Julius Caesar after the fall of Alesia, he was said to have marched in a circle around Caesar's camp multiple times, before flamboyantly dropping all his armor and weapons to Caesar's feet. (Similar characters - Although both of these may be a stretch, Lu Bu, Uesugi Kenshin)

Octavius Thurinus / Octavian Caesar - Coming from comparatively humble beginnings, as a member of the equestrian rank and a plebian, his cunning made him eventually become the first Emperor of Rome. He had fought at Julius Caesar's side during his later campaigns, and was later adopted as Julius Caesar's son and heir. When Julius Caesar was assassinated, Octavian used the resources he inherited from Caesar, as well as his influence, to avenge his death at Philippi, alongside Marcus Antonius. In later years, the Roman territory was divided between Octavian Caesar and Marcus Antonius, and the Battle of Actium decided who would rule over Rome. (Similar characters - Toyotomi Hideyoshi)

BATTLES (edits imminent)

Battle of Avaricum (52 BC) - Roman Republic vs. Gallic Tribes - This would be the first battle in the game's timeline. It would introduce the latter parts of the Gallic Wars, where Julius Caesar is beginning his struggle with Vercingetorix. Personally, I would see this board being similar to SW2's Battle of Odawara Castle in design, since it's all about heavy siege and maneuvering around walls, but it's not meant to be heavily epic. (Historical winner - Roman Republic)

Roman Republic - Julius Caesar (commander), Marcus Antonius, et al.
Gallic Tribes - Vercingetorix (commander), et al.

Battle of Gergovia (52 BC) - Roman Republic vs. Gallic Tribes - This battle was somewhat the calm before the storm, with the storm being Alesia. It was the last win for the Gauls, due to Julius Caesar's inability to finish his siege on a stalwart Vercingetorix in Gergovia, as well as his being betrayed by Gallic tribes he thought he pacified. This board would likely be similar to DW5's Battle of Si Shui Gate in design and feel. (Historical winner - Gallic Tribes)

Roman Republic - Julius Caesar (commander), Marcus Antonius, et al.
Gallic Tribes - Vercingetorix (commander), et al.

Battle of Alesia (51 BC) - Roman Republic vs. Gallic Tribes - This is the final major battle of the Gallic Wars. Caesar tried to pin down Vercingetorix inside the town of Alesia, but soldiers broke through the Caesar's surrounding units. Gallic relief forces came, and Caesar's line ended up getting attacked from both sides. Only Marcus Antonius and Gaius Trebonius's quick thinking and response, as well as Julius Caesar's own incredible valor, saved the Roman assault. The Gallic relief units were scattered, and Vercingetorix was forced to make his famous surrender to Caesar. Boards I would say would be similar to this are the DW5 and DW6 versions of the Battle of Xia Pi. (Historical winner - Roman Republic)

Roman Republic - Julius Caesar (commander), Marcus Antonius, Gaius Trebonius, Titus Labienus, et al.
Gallic Tribes - Vercingetorix (commander), Commius, Vercassivelluanos, Sedullos, et al.

Battle of Massilia (49 BC) - Populares vs. Optimates - This was the first major conflict of Caesar's civil war, which was the result of Julius Caesar's famous "crossing of the Rubicon" and running Pompeius Magnus's supporters out of Rome a few months before. This battle had a land portion and a naval portion. Caesar's navy didn't fare well against Pompeius's, but Caesar's forces still laid siege to the city and won the general battle. I think the board for this battle would be similar to SW2's Osaka Bay. Also, to add a bit more interest to the gamer's story, I'd probably add Pompeius to this battle, along with most of the others in Caesar's civil war, even though historically, Pompey was constantly running away and leaving his subordinates to fight for him. (Historical winner - Populares on land, Optimates on water, Populares overall)

Populares - Julius Caesar (commander), Marcus Antonius, Decimus Brutus, Gaius Trebonius, Scribonius Curio, et al.
Optimates - Pompeius Magnus (commander), Lucius Ahenobarbus, Lucius Nasidus, et al.

Battle of Ilerda (49 BC)
Battle of Dyrrhachium (48 BC)
Battle of Pharsalus (48 BC)
Battle of the Nile (47 BC)
Battle of Ruspina (46 BC)
Battle of Thapsus (46 BC)
Battle of Munda (45 BC)
Ides of March Unrest (44 BC)
Battle of Philippi (42 BC)
Battle of Perugia (41 BC)
Battle of Naulochus (36 BC)
Battle of Actium (31 BC)

Great idea, but too many Romans and not enough Rules and Warlords of other nations. I would have perfered the setting to be the Roman Republic from the time of Marius to Julius. Or even slightly earlier.

If you go for a early time. You can do storylines for Pontus, Ethiopia, Carthage, Spain, Gaul, Egypt and Persia. Or if you go with your idea. Then make the setting as you have mainly the Roman Civil War between Julius, Pompeius, and Octvavian. Create deep story musou for them and thier allies. I like your battles in Gaul. But, I think there are a few others you left out. Can't remember the leader, but Julius got caught with his pants down along a river, where he almost lost to the Gauls.

Of coarse, you know that the Roman records of Julius in Gaul, is written with a HUGE propaganda slant, to make Julius look good.

The reason why I went with more Roman civil wars than Rome's conquest of other nations is because the records for Romans are a whole lot more meticulous. This is really important when it comes to figuring out names to scrounge around for lesser officers, as needed in most Warriors games. Also, I think the story with Julius Caesar, Augustus Caesar, and Marcus Antonius is a lot more popular among most people, so it would just simply sell better based on recognition.

But, when it comes to warlords and officers of other nations, things would likely be easily fleshed out with the Egyptian forces, since the Egyptians were also very good record keepers.

I definitely have a worthwhile story mode for characters. I'm not sure if it would be best to call it a musou for a character in a game with a Roman flavor though. Maybe call it a sine pari or something like that. I intend to flesh them out more in the coming days/weeks. I just wanted to get something put up yesterday (and I didn't want it to be so long that people first looking at the topic would go "too long, didn't read").

As for the battle you're referring to about Julius Caesar almost sent up a rive, do you mean the Battle of the Sabis? It was Julius Caesar against Boduognatus (who I had never heard of before I looked it up just now). That was the battle right before Avaricum. In regard to my only having three Gallic battles, that goes back to my argument about finding the necessary names for officers. Unless you think people would be content with something generic as "Tribesman" or something similar for half the Gallic officers in those fights, I personally wouldn't put many of the earlier Gallic battles there.

As for Roman records of Julius, or anyone of that period, for that matter, one has to take anything any senator or other writer in those days with some caution.

I do like that idea. I think that a game similar to the Dynasty Tactics series would be a fairly decent seller. I still think a hack and slash should be the main game line though.

Honda Civic, Yes, that is the battle I was thinking of. Thank you. I have no problem with adding some suitable Celtic names for leaders not mentioned by Julius in his conquest for Gaul. And I believe it has a real place in the later telling of the Civil War between him and Pompeius, and Octavian.

His Conquest of Gaul was in part to gain the Army and Power needed to take on Pompeius.

I fully agree with you on the importance of the Gallic Wars. The main reason why I wanted to put limited focus on them in a prospective first game is because I think the average gamer would either get bored or annoyed by too much background story. That's one reason why there aren't four, six, or eight Yellow Turbans boards in most DW titles, even though there could be.

Moreover, there needs to be something to stick in an Xtreme Legends title, and I think more Gaul battles would be just the thing.

if this idea ever floats, it would not work for it to be a Warriors type game. think about it, Gaius Julius (correct my spelling) going through the forests of Gaul slashing through waves of Gaulish warriors by himself. to me that just doesn't work, and it is historicly inaccurate. if anything it should either be like Tactics or Bladestorm.

I don't disagree with you in regard to the historical inaccuracy having the generals dig in and do a lot of hand-to-hand combat. I'm just thinking of what would sell. Maybe a Tactics or Bladestorm game would do well, but I'm not sure. Then again, the Kessen series had a fair amount of success...

i really like this idea but, i think it will be just a dynasty warriors with sand. i would love to play it. the weapons would be awesome like pikes or even a chariot for transportation. and even a sub-game for an arena style one on one death match. as like a tekken game.

If you limit the Characters so they are not god like, then a Warrior game could be made. Julius had been know to lead from the front on occasion. I'd rather see a combination with many Empire style elements, with combat in a form closer to Kessen 3. Ditch the X Y stuff for the units, and focus on orders, but allow for General to enter a Warriors style figure for a limited time.

I would also like to see it focus on Julius and his contemporaries. That way a decent story can be told. His Campaigns and his generals campaigns, including the Civil Wars. Ending with his death.

If the game is successful then the next one would focus on the Civil Wars and life of Octavian (Caesar Augustus) and his contempories.

OR change the focus to a earlier time, putting the Main focus on Hannibal and his life.
