I'm surprised I haven't see a topic about him.

Okay, as some of you already know, Masayuki was a general in the Sengoku era who later become a daimyo. He was the son of Sanada Yukitaka and father of both Sanada Nobuyuki and Yukimura.

Like his father, he started with serving the Takeda. It was said that he attented the 4th battle of Kawanakajima. He became the head of Sanada clan after the dead of his brothers at Nagashino. Masayuki was known for being the brains of the Takeda after Nagashino. The battle of Temmokuzan was the battle where all of the Takeda were wiped out, except those who defected to the Tokugawa (Oyamada and the others). Masayuki himself chose to retreat to Shinano with his sons, his uncle, and some retainers.

After Nobunaga's demise at Honnoji, Masayuki declared his independence.
Ieyasu attacked Ueda Castle, but he failed. Later Masayuki send Nobuyuki to the Tokugawa and he ultimately married to Tadakatsu's daughter Komatsu/Ina. Yukimura himself was sent to the Uesugi. Masayuki later submit to Kampaku Hideyoshi and helped besieging Odawara Castle.

When the time for Sekigahara was approaching, he left the Eastern Army and sided with the Toyotomi. On his way to Sekigahara, Tokugawa Hidetada came to Shinano with purpose to subdue the Sanada. Hidetada's siege failed, as none of the forces joined Sekigahara.

Years after Sekigahara, he was exiled to Kii, along with Yukimura and his grandson Yukimasa. In 1611, Masayuki passed away during his exile. It was said that foul play took part on his dead.

I think he was a very great man. He survived the Takeda's demise and made a fool of Ieyasu several times.

What do you think of him?

Well, Masayuki sending Nobuyuki to the Tokugawa and sending Yukimura to the Uesugi was a pretty smart move seeing as it ended up ensuring the survival of the Sanada clan.

Masayuki was known for being the brains of the Takeda after Nagashino.
I've never actually heard anything regarding Masayuki being any sort of strategic advisor for Katsuyori. Atobe Katsusuke and Katsuyori's uncle Nobukado were his most noted advisors, infamously in Atobe's case since he was the one to support Katsuyori's actions at Nagashino.

From what I've discerned, Masayuki was semi-independent after Nagashino and made his own move into Kozuke Province to take Numata Castle from the Hojo.

This is a bit incorrect. Temmokuzan was hardly a battle, it was merely the final part of the entire Takeda extermination campaign carried out by the Oda and Tokugawa. Kiso Yoshimasa(Katsuyori's brother-in-law) started it off by defecting to the Oda in southern Shinano.

Masayuki and his sons never budged from Ueda Castle.

As awesome as he was, Masayuki does have one blotch on his record. He was defeated by the Hojo in Kozuke in 1589, resulting in the death of one of his retainers, Suzuki Shigenori and the loss of Nagurumi Castle, which was the trigger for Hideyoshi's Odawara Campaign.

Semi-independent? I guess that explains why he was a daimyo of his own in NA:Kakushin while Katsuyori was still alive.

Samurai Archives said that Masayuki and Yukimura were exiled to Kii after Ieyasu's victory at Sekigahara, and Masayuki died there, was that true?

So Temmokuzan was hardly a battle. I have heaed of him losing in Kozuke, defeated by the Hojo, which gave Hideyoshi the reason to attack Odawara. I also told that he never got a chance to expand his territory after Hideyoshi died. By the way, why did he left the Eastern Army?

By the way, why did he left the Eastern Army?
The prevailing theory is that he wanted to ensure the Sanada survival if the opposing side won. Supposedly back then Masayuki was known to switch allegiances when he thought it was convenient for his family.

Of course you have to keep in mind while doing this his territory was right smack in the middle of the Eastern Army's sphere of influence and the Uesugi were not obligated to help them in any way.

The actual reason will likely remain unknown.

It's not like the Uesugi could have helped Masayuki(had the Uesugi still been based in Echigo, I'm sure they would have worked with the Sanada for the campaign.) Tokugawa territory separated those two clans as Sanada was in Shinano and Uesugi was in Aizu, which was originally Date territory.

correct me if I'm wrong but Yukimura was sent hostage to the Toyotomi not Uesugi. I also read that while he was a prisoner of the Toyotomi, Hideyoshi treated Yukimura with good hospitality and gave yukimura permision to USE the Toyotomi name. It is also said that he even by Yukimura himself was referred as Toyotomi Nobushige.
