A decade ago, SEGA released one of the most beloved pieces of hardware in gaming history, and the pioneer of online gaming. This console was simply genius, and although this is a bit too late to be talking about an outdated console (in today's generation of gaming standards), we could still learn a lot from it today and how many consoles could follow its footsteps without making the same mistakes. But what was it exactly that lead to the Dreamcast's downfall? Was it due to it not having enough third parties? The huge ~80,000,000 budget spent on Shenmue? Or the arrival of more advanced hardwares like the Xbox, PS2 and the Gamecube? I honestly don't know, but it would be appreciated for some of the old school gamers to fill me in on that. My favorite games have always been Shenmue, Jet Grind (and Set) Radio, and Crazy Taxi. I was an idiot for selling this console. But this suddenly gave me the urge to have a nostalgic re-run of the Dreamcast (if I ever find it before it's lost forever) and buy a Wii. But at least a lot of these classics are available as console downloadables. (I was tempted to put this in the History Realm, but this'll do) =P |

I got a Dreamcast instead of PS1...and I'm definitely sure I made the right choice :D. Honestly, I don't think it was Shenmue that brought the Dreamcast down...It was just the unfortunate timing when the Dreamcast was released. The PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube came shortly after....and that lead pretty much lead to the downfall. Games I played on the Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Rayman 2, Powerstone 1&2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Shenmue, Street Fighter Alpha 3 (The best version by far), and Soul Calibur. |

While the console itself was great, the controller was a piece of crap. Phantasy Star Online was a groundbreaking game, and it was much better than Shenmue in my opinion. |

Shenmue and Phantasy Star Online are two very different games. I actually liked the controller for DC. Especially for fighters like Marvel vs Capcom 2, SFA3 and Soul Calibur. Pulling off button commands felt easier and smoother on DC controllers than they did on PS controllers. |

I agree about the DC controllers, they were awesome. Specially the VMU things that showed you different stats and stuff. The only problem I had with the controllers was that they would always break. My favorite DC Games were Soul Calibur, Hydro Thunder, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Sonic Adventure, Virtual-ON, and Virtua Tennis. |

Actually, it was the lack of marketting on Sega's part. The PS2 did have something to do with it too, though. That was hyped so much about how it was going to be so much better than the Dreamcast, and when it came out, the games looked comparable. Soul Calibur to Tekken Tag, Shenmue to Final Fantasy X, etc. Dreamcast was a great system, but Sega just didn't have enough faith in it, sadly. They pulled to plug too quickly on a console that had many innovative games and ideas. I still dream for the day Sega goes back to developing hardware.

I doubt they ever will, they've been specializing in software ever since. It would be too risky. |

I have a Dreamcast, unfortunately mine is broken. The system won't read the disc anymore especially when I was playing Shenmue after I would leave Ryo's bedroom, the game just kept freezing up. I loved that game and wish I can play it again along with my Soul Calibur but I have the game on other consoles so it doesn't bother me as much.

Doesn't matter if you think they're "very different games", I'm stating my opinion on which one I preffered Edited by l00mer, Sat Sep 19, 2009 2:41 pm.

Preference does not equal quality. As he said, they're very different and can't be compared. You could compare PSO to MH or Shenmue to Yakuza, but not PSO to Shenmue. |

It's too bad that another Sega console is unlikely. Sega consoles have never disappointed me as far as I can remember. Genesis was great, and dreamcast was freaking awesome. On a sidenote, about the Shenmue series...The game seriously needs some closure. The entire storyline is already written out, but the next installment in the Shenmue series has been canceled. |

http://au.games.ign.com/articles/102/1027254p1.html This is massive folkes, allegedly Sega are preparing to put full Dreamcast games on sale on PSN for the PS3... Also there's an awesome idea for an import store where you can buy Japanese games with english subs and menus including the new Yakuza games! |

The 2nd part sounds almost too good to be true? A store that sells import games with english subtitles? Wow...that'd be AWESOME. I've been wanting to get my own copy of the Kenzan spin-off. As for the dreamcast games...that's pretty cool. It'd be nice to play the Power Stone games on a console again. |

What Hakumei said. As of yet, it's just been proposed, possibly by Sega. I'm not getting excited until Sony officially announces it. I'd KILL for a subtitled, downloadable Kenzan, since I'm sure that's the only way we'd get it here. |

I actually aw that article on GameSpot the other day bu failed to post it. The one thing that intrigued me the most was the Sonic collection of every single one of his games on one Blu-ray disc for $100. I'd definitely buy it. :p I wonder if they would use the Dreamcast versions of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, or the Gamecube versions? I'm inclined to think the former due to licensing issues, but the latter had additional content and all. Having every Sonic game all in one place on one console would be pretty sweet. I wonder if Sonic Unleashed would also be included? Of course, this is only a rumor of sorts, so I shouldn't get too excited.

I regret never having the chance to play a Dreamcast, and for the life of me I can't seem to find one in the area (and I just don't feel like trusting ebay yet). So, reading that it -might- be available for the PSN pleases me greatly... finally, I can get to try those games!

Even though Sega have pretty much lost it over the years, they still remain my favourite company. I grew up playing on their consoles so I just can't help it ;p Shenmue 1 was great but Shenmue II was even better. Since Yu Suzuki has been demoted, its gonna be even harder for a Shenmue III release, but we can still hope... I'm really surprised no one here has mentioned Skies of Arcadia! An game worth every RPG fans' time! I still have my Dreamcast in my room, I love it and always will! |
