Diao Chan isn't real, and is an invention of Chinese folk lore. There may be a maid that Lu Bu had relations with, but we know her name is unlikely to be Diao Chan. According to Wikipedia, ""Diāochán" likely referred to the sable (diào) tails and jade decorations in the shape of cicadas (chán), which at the time adorned the hats of high-level officials." So here's my question. Diao Chan is an invented person, but those people telling folk tales must have had a reason why they named Diao Chan...Diao Chan. Has there been any historical studies on why folk tales chosen this name? |

It's a Western Depiction such as Sun Shang Xiang who is historically named as "Sun Shangxiang" but not many in the Western World are aware of that anyway

The reason why Luo Guanzhong took "Diao" and "Chan" is not known. It is pretty much a random name. I believe cicada is a hat that worn by Han officials. |

I didn't remember "she was charged with the duty of taking care of court officials' hat decorations known as Diao Chan at the time. Hence she came to be known as such". Nice read, thanks for the link, Jandi. |

You're welcome. But, it could be possible if it happened in real life before she became a concubine. |
