Didn't know where else to put this one, but since it is music... Recently with me spraining my ankle, I decided to sit back and watch some new batches of DVD's my parents just bought, and I spotted an Andrew Lloyd Webber set. In about a span of 4 hours I watched 3 Webber productions, two of them being my favorite musical productions: Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats. I haven't seen those in like 10 years, and I fell in love with them over again. Other musicals I like (But not as my favorites) are Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita and Le Miserables. What about everyone else? What musicals are your favorites? |

I started a topic once about musicals once... now it's in the archives. Good luck with this topic. ![]() Anyway, I have seen a few musicals. Recently I've seen Sweeny Todd and Evil Dead the Musical preformed by the theatre program here at my university. I enjoyed both shows very much. I also seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Blood Brothers (in London, but I can't remember if that was a musical, of just a play, it's been so long). Favorite musicals of mine I LOVE but haven't seen would be Phantom of the Opera and Tanz Der Vampire (it's only in Germany ) BUT I have tickets to see Phantom on December 5th and I simply cannot wait! I've been in love with the music since I was like 12~! (I'm 20 now). Haha, I remember having to watch CATS in middle school during my music class and I hated it. But maybe that I'm more mature now I'd appreciate it more. Still the premise seems silly to me. Anyway, here is an assortment of songs from Tanz Der Vampire. The music is written by Jim Stienman so it's simply beautiful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epWl_ZZSF48 It's not for everyone 'cause it's German... I don't care what anyone says about the language, I absolute love it!! Guess it's an acquired taste.

My favorite musical of all time is Starlight Express, a musical about trains that's performed on skates. I got the chance to see it once in America (though it was a shortened, dumbed down version based off of the 1992 London version with Red Caboose added in, then immediately removed after I saw the show). Then, I got to see it three times in Bochum, Germany... and it's still one of the best experiences I had in my life. Then, Cats, and RENT... |

Well, when you get a bunch of poems by T.S Elliot and make them into a musical, you KNOW the premise is gonna be silly. Silly as it is, I still find Cats a good musical, varied and dynamic. Not to mention, it's one of the longest productions ever done on Broadway. Yeah I bet back when we were kids at least some of us either hated it or were terrified of it. But when you grow older of course you appreciate the more finer things of life. Tidbit before moving away from Cats, I actually acted in a small production of it at my university. I was Rum Tum Tugger. The way I heard of Sweeny Todd was when I watched the Tim Burton version, and... DANG. I'm curious to see how the original production is though. I haven't even seen Rocky Horror yet but I hear its good. As for Phantom, who hasn't heard of it? It's probably Lloyd Webber's most famous production. One of my friends on another forum said he saw it recently...in Japanese. I haven't seen Starlight Express yet, but I'm curious to see it; as a kid I loved trains, mostly because of Thomas the Tank Engine. Fun fact: Starlight Express was originally gonna be a musical based on "The Railway Series" books. But that fell through after a small spat between Lloyd Webber and the author. The books would eventually be adapted into Thomas the Tank Engine. But Lloyd Webber still got at least some part of it. Why else do you think his company is called the "Really Useful Group"? ![]()

Well, I cosplayed Tugger once or twice. Here's the only picture I have in regards to that. Spoiler: click to toggle Yeah. This was about eight, nine years ago. And I did not know that about the origins of Thomas the Tank Engine. That is definitely interesting. |

Wow, nice costume. Way better then mine. I won't post mine. As much as I like Cats, the one I was in was rather...embarrassing. I'd rather not talk about it. |

I remember reading that. He also took a snippet of some waltz music when writing the music for 'Make Up My Heart' in Starlight Express. How do I know this? Roger is constantly starting with that tune to come up with 'his one song' and Mark comments its similarities in RENT. I heard the song in RENT and thought 'hey, isn't that 'Make Up My Heart'? Yeaaaaaaah. Despite all of this (and the knack he has for running in and ruining his own perfectly good productions), I still like ALW musicals. I loved Phantom of the Opera as well... I thought the movie adaptation was pretty good, and I loved Gerald Butler. Just the thought of Leonidas and Phantom being the same person pleases me so. |

The movie adaptation is what really exposed me to Phantom. My parents have the soundtrack of the broadway version, but I never actually seen the story until the movie. |

Same with me! Sorta.. I actually was exposed to the music when I was in middle school. Our school's chorus did a "Phantom Medley", singing bits and pieces from the entire musical. It was by far my favorite song we chose to perform that year. I remember telling my mom and she let me listen to her Broadway CD (actually it was a "highlights" CD and only included the big pieces). It really wasn't until much later, when I was about 16 when I caught the movie in HBO when I was sick home from school, that I fell in love with it again (I remember asking my mom if she wanted to see the film when it was in theaters, but we never got around to it). So after watching the film, I pretty much immediately pulled out the highlights CD and began listening to it obsessively. It didn't take too long for me to go out and buy the film as was as the entire Original Cast Recording CD (oh and even the novel by Gaston Leroux on which the musical is based, haha). And this afternoon I finally caught it on stage for the first time during the US Tour! 'Twas awesome! Our Phantom was Tim Martin Gleason, who actually holds the record for preforming the role of Raoul longer than anyone in the US, but has recently become the Phantom on the US Tour AND WOW was his voice INCREDIBLE! I used to love Michael Crawford but the more I find out about him the less I like him. Plus he does song a bit girly. >_> BUT Tim Martin Gleason was great and is probably my favorite Phantom now. ![]() He did an excellent job depicting the Phantom's anger/jealousy as well as his vulnerable side. He simply gave me chills! Aaaaand.... I totally just found out there's going to be a sequel to Phantom. AND SOON. "Love Never Dies." I remember hearing this rumor years ago, but didn't think it would ever come to fruition. I... I... I'm really worried it will be terrible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Never_Dies_%28musical%29 http://www.loveneverdies.com/ Edited by Manji, Sun Dec 6, 2009 6:05 am.

...a sequel? Hmm... The plot according to the page sounds a bit cheap actually. Sounds like something that belongs in a horror movie. But then again Phantom of the Opera WAS a horror movie a long time ago. |

Well, let's not forget that the 1925 black & white silent film starring Lon Chaney was based upon the novel by Gaston Leroux. ![]() The Phantom of the Opera was actually more of a detective novel than anything else. I guess the film was creepy for something from the '20's, haha. ![]() There's actually been two musical previews for "Love Never Dies," which debuts in March 2010 in London. "Till I Here You Song (Once More)" by Ramin Karimloo (cast as the Phantom for LND) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHgABcLtqNE ^Upon the first listen, I thought it was a bit generic... but upon further plays I find that it has REALLY grown on me... plus Ramin's voice is gorgeous. So hard to find fault. "Coney Island Waltz" : Introduction piece? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgSQDBrDbKk&feature=fvw Doesn't exactly top POTO's overture, but what does? Sounds a bit more like something from a movie score, but I suppose it's rather catchy and capture's the environment very well. The only reason I'm kind of against the sequel is that it destroys the Phantom's redemption at the end of POTO. He let's Christine go with Raoul, providing us with the message that the hardest part of loving someone is having to let them go. But now they're going to have him stalk her again? And why would she agree to meet with him again after all he put her through? It's just not logical! Then of course we have to worry about it ending like BAD fanfiction... *sigh* I'm sure they're will be some beautiful music but as far as the story goes I remain skeptical and a bit nervous. Sorry for ranting so much I just happen to be very passionate about Phantom and I really have no other outlet.

No prob, I'm with you on this one. It doesn't sound like something Lloyd Webber would create, it sounds like something of fanfiction.net |
