Did these troops volunteer to join up with the military, so as to feed their family? Or were they drafted into the army, given a sword and told to fight? I want to know if I should feel sorry for all the NPCs that died during a Dynasty Warrior battle.

Is the first really that much better then the second? Most would have been drafted into service |

How does this sound for the basic way to become a Wu soldier. You live on a graceful falling slope of a hill with your family. You trade with peoples from all over and you can eat freely as food is in abundance. Then an army arrives, declares war on you, attacks you, most likely kills members of your families. You are forced into a walled city where you are taxed. If you are able-bodied you are automatically drafted into the army and expected to fight. If you didn't, you die. Basic Wu army was made of these people. Wei, family conscription. You're brother is forced to join the army. He dies a painful death [or swift, or lonely, or basically he dies] You are forced to take his place, if you do not you are taken away from your family, killed, and then the next male relative in line will take your place. In Shu, the people actually followed Liu Bei around. He was given troops most of the time, later in Jing he was popular so people actually flocked to join his army. He gained troops from people who surrendered when finally settling in Yi people were drafted, but it wasn't a family draft, nor a campaign against the people. That's not to say that this method was better as Cao Cao's military system was revolutionary and Sun Quan's method brought the south into a working state. But it was a tad bit kinder in comparison. |

Can you point us to some specific sources and citations for the kingdoms' military policies as you described them? Cao Cao's Sanguozhi disagrees with the idea that Wei conscription extended to every male relative in line:

Able bodied man, or those not engaging in filial duties or participating within the administration, of course were exempt. ZZTJ, or rather Rafe's work on the south. The ZZTJ gives only minor details into it while rafe describes it in his many a thesis of Wu. |
