So the debate for the best swordsman in the Sengoku era is normally confined to the usual suspects: Sasaki Kojiro, Miyamoto Musashi, Yagyu Munenori etc. but what about the best spear master? Ankokuji Ekei? Honda Tadakatsu? I'm interested to know who is regarded as the top spearman in Sengoku Japan. Edited by DarkDante, Wed Jun 16, 2010 2:57 pm.

Hard to say, really. I gotta say either Kani Saizo, Maeda Toshiie, or the Saikyo. But really, Hozoin Inei's kinda cool. |

And there's also Musō Gonnosuke. Okay, he's no spearman, but a staff is a bit similar. |

Marume Nagayoshi, Kani Saizo, Hozoin Inei, Takenouchi Hisamori or Hoshina Masatoshi are all contenders for the title. Anybody who wasn't a spearmaster by trade(or personally trained by one) ought not be considered. Marume Nagayoshi: a master spearman from Kyushu, served the Sagara before opening his spear school. Kani Saizo: an expert spearman who studied under Hozoin Inei. Personally killed the most opponents during Sekigahara than any other samurai there. Hozoin Inei: a master spearman who founded one of the oldest spear schools. Takenouchi Hisamori: a master spearman from Chugoku who founded one of the oldest spear schools. Hoshina Masatoshi: one of the Takeda 28 generals, and recorded as a master spearman in the Koyo Gunkan. I would personally vote for Kani Saizo. And lol at Ankokuji. I'm actually quite curious where people heard he was some sort of spearmaster. Edited by SRS, Thu Jun 17, 2010 4:37 am.

I'd say Honda Tadakatsu since he wielded one of the "Three Great Spears of Japan"
Wasn't he the master of the "Spear of Hozoin"? Other than that, I blame Onimusha... >.< |

Not for too long, though. He eventually gave it to Mori Tahei Tomonobu, a retainer of the Kuroda. But honestly, I don't think simply owning a cool spear makes you a good spearman. Yuki Hideyasu has Otegine, but he could hardly be called a great spearman. |

I say Honda Tadakatsu was the best spear man because of his Tombo - Giri.

How often did he actualy serve on the front lines in battle though. I would be impressed if he was a know Vanguard, like Fukushima Masanori and Ii Naomasa. But all I get from this legend is that he was never close enough to the front lines to get hit. I know he served in many battles, but... how often was he truly in harms way (in comparison to others on the battle field). Meh, forgot about the main topic. My vote goes to Kani Saizo, because he was actually close enough to take some heads. Mod Edit: Names fixed. Nice try on the initials, but rules are rules. ^ Have you forgot the battle of Mikatagahara if it wasn't for big Tadakatsu the poor man with the silly hat wouldn't escape with his life. |
