Gay is a word that can be used for Happy or Homossexual. Some claim that using the word Gay to describe a character is not ok. Discuss it here

Was this real the best idea after whats happend? :S..

It all depends if you get upset when the word gay is used to describe a person.. It’s not the best word to use but its rather homophobic if you are against it... because someone can look Camp/Queer (or whatever else you want too call it) And theres nothign wrong with it...

What’s wrong is using the word to intentionally insult someone..
As i said in the main topic, the word gay is overused these days mainly to be an insult... the term itself to describe someone in a reasonable manor is fine.

Yes, because this discussion might be quelled now, but it may return soon. So, let's make a thread just for it and keep it going

I'm rather curious at when "gay" became a bad word anyway. I'm aware of the original meaning, but I wonder what degraded it for somebody being homosexual?

"Gay" as an insult, is as bad as any swear word IMO.

People will always find ways to twist a word to insult people... Many words that are counted as swears have actual meaning behind them... Seeing as Homosexuality is looked down upon by religion and others who view is as immoral... People use the word out of context many times because of the internet and the slang created from it... It happends because of sites like 4chan.. (Even though the insultive way of using gay has been around for years)

That’s why you can either choose to ignore it as a simple slur and understand the real meaning behind the word, or get angry at its use which overshadows the people who use it correctly..

being against the term altogether can make the person appear homophobic if they talk about it being a bad way to describe someone..

(yes, i do edit alot :XD )

A lot of people nowadays will use the word "Gay" as slang to describe something that is stupid or dumb. The same thing also happened with the word Retarded. People also use it as slang to describe something or someone being stupid, which in my opinion is even worse to say. This is not something new to happen either because the word "gay" originally meant happy and then became synonymous for homosexuals and lesbians later.

Universal recently pulled a trailer for the movie, The Dilemma, because Vince Vaughn used the word as an insult and Anderson Cooper called them out for it.

I don't really see the point in using these words as slang. It makes you sound uneducated, but I guess that's why it's mostly youngsters using these words today. I'd rather use asinine, unintelligent, stupid, idiot, moron, lame, or loser.

Well I wouldn't really call myself a gamer, but I definitely wouldn't say something is "gay" or call somebody a "noob". I don't do much trash talking either for games. I don't see the point since I can just kick their asses with my skills.

Insulting someone with more sophisticated words rather then swear slangs seems to show that you are more knowledgeable and well-read.

Nothing is wrong....as long as you don't bring it outside the realm of videogames. That's just IMO though.

I'd continue about the usage of "gay" but then we might be plunging into homosexuality debates here.

It depends on your intensions, or how u use it in a sentence, and mainly just your attitude towards it... if someone who is not you uses it in a harmless discussion, jus trying to say what he thinks... and says something like... " that's kinda gay.." and the other person flips and trys to put on a vocabulary lesson... damn I'm sorry... I didn't know saying the word gay was a bad thing... I kno there's other words to use but who are you to tell me how I should speak... its almost like telling someone who speaks spanglish to speak proper english, we are all different in many ways, sometimes you try to correct someone you do more damage than you expected, I'm just saying.. its kinda gay, then you attack more then teach which isn't nessesary... now I feel like the victim... attitude is key... it determines everything

I seriously don't know why this needs a topic. Gay is in no means a swear word, let it even be a bad word.

If a man or a woman says his or her sexual orientation is not with the opposite sex, they say they are gay(I've never ever heard someone say "I'm a homosexual"). So they would say something bad about themselves? Of course not!

If I would pick words in the same category, I'd pick:
- F@gg0t;
- Homo;
- Gaylord.

These are insulting and confronting words.

If you're insulting someone, I don't think word choice would make you any better a person. ^^"

What about using the world gay to refer to the stereotype of a homosexual man? Flamboyant, dramatic, eccentric, camp. example: Zhang He, or Yu Jin in Kessen.

Because homosexuals are a marginalized group (in the US at least), it's not possible to take the word only at face value and ignore the underlying sociopolitical context. Because of this, it's complicated.

And by who? Is it always insulting? I hear of principles of inclusion, where members of a marginalized group can use terms that a powerful group can use without being as offensive. Like the n-word. African-Americans may say it, and to an extent other minority groups such as Latinos, but if a white person says it then it is an offensive context. Or the c-word for Asians- once a friend of mind was looking through photos, found one with her eyes squinted closed, and said "hahaha I look so chinky here." She's Chinese, but imagine if a non-Asian person had said that.

So the word gay, may homosexual (or other sexual minorities) people use it? I read in the argument that someone said that it couldn't be insulting because he was gay. Obviously he could not have meant it in an offensive of degrading term, when you take it in that context. But what are we supposed to say? "Oh, he's gay, he can use the insult." This is the same principle as the n-word.

But the word seems to explicitly refer to a gay man. What about queer women? Am I allowed to use the word gay then?

If theres a topic in the general section, there's a VlogBrothers video about it.

So yeah, using the word 'Gay' as an insult to someone, just makes you look silly, because the word is not an insult, it's just who a person is. Whats even more silly though, IMO, is if a gay person gets offended by someone using 'Gay' as a synonym for bad.

Well, does it really matter HOW the insulter sounds or looks or appears to other people, if someone is hurt by it?

I really don't think it matters if the offender comes off as stupid, or uneducated, or anything, if there is a person who feels threatened, unwelcome, or otherwise! Especially if it's caused by not just one person but a large group of people as a whole

Correcting someone constantly because they speak a different dialect is rude. Correcting someone because they said something offensive and insulting strikes me as a good way of preventing hurt feelings and perhaps a possible punch up. You could use another more accurate word then gay and so prevent hurt feelings and people feeling uncomfortable, everyone is happy. All it takes is just one word change, surely not that hard? Though it does seem that, to some, it is like asking them to solve how the universe started

I find it very very annoying and unhelpful. If someone keeps on doing it, I tend to ask that what is the dress code for being bisexual? Is there some way I should act to give a blatant sign of sexuality? Flamboyancy shouldn't mark a man out as gay (or for that matter, weak and stupid) and vice versa

In the right context, I would assume so.

I hate the use of gay as an insult. We seem to have got rid of rasicisim as an acceptable insult in some parts of the world and rightly so. Now Asians and black people can go to football/soccer games and black players don't get banana's thrown on the pitch for example. Insult a man using skin colour and your likely to get sacked and most would be horrified at the thought of it.

Gay on the other hand, I have seen many nice people use as an unthinking insult. A fair section probably mean no harm by it and in theory have nothing against gays but they will sing "so and so is a poofter" and such like in stadium's, in anger use words like queer to insult people. Then they wonder where only one footballer in the English football league has ever come out, Justin Fashanu (who committed suicide in 1998). Why would they? The amount of anti gay things they hear is going to scare them into the closet. It's hardly comfortable when your own sexuality is being used as an insult

Only use if you are gay. Same with the n-word; only use if you are black. The reason they are excused is that the n-word has historically also been used as a term of endearment amongst "them". Any other use by any other person is un-PC.

Are you serious? Straight people aren't allowed to call gay people gay? That's political correctness gone mad that is, and it doesn't even make sense to me. The dreaded N word is derogatory, gay is not.

Okay I'm going to say it just for educational purposes. Oh gee! ^^"

It's "******," a derogatory term for black people. It's a slang based off of the word "nergo," which was originally an everyday use word for a black person (often connotative of a man, hence the use of an added-on word such as woman at the end). It's just something that you would NEVER say in front of anyone. I mean it's worse than ****, ****, etc.

Boner originally meant to make a mistake/messing up ("cocking up", if you will lol) e.g.

"It was Freddy's massive boner thar led the police to finding him"

:sly:

With that in mind, we see that the meanings of words uncontrollably change over time. Gay used to mean happy, now it means homosexual. Whilst I don't agree with the concept of homosexuality, Gay shouldn't be used as a cuss word on the basis of what you said, I think. Using your logic, I should tell people stop using the word boner for what it means in modern times, 'cos it used to mean something else ages ago.

I´m gay today.

Hooray?

I just don´t use the word for anything, seeing as it sounds dumb.
There are better words to say for something sucks, someone is homosexual or to say someone is happy.

Like sucks, homosexual and happy.
