Dynasty Warriors 7 Producer "Akihiro Suzuki" Interview
A quick chat with the producer of Koei's upcoming Dynasty Warriors 7 on massive combat, Japanese imports, and the 3D revolution

Here is the source, and the current interview:
http://popzara.com/pages/1593/

Here is the informative interview:

For nearly two decades producer, director, and programmer Akihiro Suzuki has been a major driving force behind many of videogame developer/publisher Koei (now Tecmo-Koei). With a resume that includes such blockbusters as the Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi franchises, as well as several other of the company's biggest hits, including Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War and most recently, TRINITY: Souls of Zill O'll on the PlayStation 3. Up next is the anticipated release of Dynasty Warriors 7 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, which promises to be the bloodiest and most intense massive hack 'n slash action game in the series yet.

On the even of his company's latest release in the popular series, Suzuki-san was kind enough to indulge us a few questions about Dynasty Warriors 7, including what fans can expect from the new strategic combo system and the unique challenges in bringing massive character action into the world of 3-D. You definitely don't want to miss this hack 'n slashing good time with the undisputed King of massive hack 'n slash action!

Popzara.com: Thanks for taking some time to chat with us today. For the benefit of those who may not be as familiar with your name as the franchises you’ve worked on, would you please tell us a bit about yourself and what projects you’ve been involved with, specially your work with Tecmo-Koei?

Akihiro Suzuki: "Hi, my name is Akihiro Suzuki. I’ve been around since our development team Omega Force was formed. I was the director of DYNASTY WARRIORS 2, 3, and 4. Following those projects I became the producer of titles such as DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Empires, BLADESTORM: The Hundred Years’ War, DYNASTY WARRIORS 6: Empires, TRINITY: Souls of Zill O’ll, among others. And, of course, I am the producer of DYNASTY WARRIORS 7."

Popzara.com: I was surprised to hear that Dynasty Warriors 7 (at least for the PlayStation 3) was going to featured 3D visuals, as is the upcoming version [of Samurai Warriors] for Nintendo’s 3DS. Given the number of characters onscreen, were there any specific challenges in bringing these franchises into the third dimension?

More to that, I’m curious what your thoughts as a developer are on the “3D Revolution”, at least as it applies to the videogame market. Are we in the middle of the industry’s next evolutionary progression, at least one on the same level of polygonal graphics and online play? Are there any benefits for players?

Akihiro Suzuki: "3D technology is not that complex when you think about it, but it’s a huge challenge to execute because you have to process a lot more information, just as you pointed out. This was something we had a bit of a hard time with when making DW7.

To answer your second question, at this very point in time it’s difficult to comment on whether 3D technology is the next big evolution in the gaming industry. The technology is developing as we speak so depending on the way that technology develops, this will decide how gaming technology will evolve and what will be that next big bang in the industry that will drive the future of game development.

Coming back to the discussion about 3D, you could say that it does benefit players. It makes the game look and feel more dynamic and if you get the technology right you can give players a deeper and much more involving experience than usual."

Popzara.com: Speaking of another Tecmo-Koei game you produced recently, I recently finished playing the American release of Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll on the PlayStation 3, only to find that it doesn’t offer the same DLC as its Japanese or European counterparts. Was this a strategic decision or was the decision to remove additional content due to time constraints?

Akihiro Suzuki: "You could say that it was more strategic. We did some research and found out that there were not so many needs for the same types of DLC over in America and Europe so we decided to let these go."

Popzara.com: Back to Dynasty Warriors 7, are there new gameplay mechanics or features that we should expect from the latest installment? I’ve read that we’ll be able to switch weapons mid-combo, and was curious what else longtime fans (myself included) can look forward to?

Akihiro Suzuki: "If you are a fan of the series such as yourself you will find out that the real-time weapon-switch system which you just mentioned is a new and interesting feature in the series. When you switch between weapons you will be able to execute a switch-weapon attack. Each weapon will have its unique characteristic so if you strategically mix and match certain switch attacks and keep in mind their effects and attributes, you will be able to find out many new combo attacks. If you dig even further into the mix you’ll find that some weapon combinations give you special attacks when you execute a switch combo between those particular weapons."

Popzara.com: I know fans can look forward to playing Dynasty Warriors 7 on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 soon, but is there anything else you’re currently working on that we should be getting excited about?

Akihiro Suzuki: "I can’t talk about any right now but make sure you stay tuned for more information."

I think he was talking only about Trinity: Souls when he said the DLC canceled. If they do any "research" on DW7 DLC, then they will clearly see that we want it, BAD. XD

This video proves the horrendous AI. He stood there for a good 5-10 seconds and guess what? THE ENEMY SOLDIERS DIDN'T ATTACK HIM.

lol, and they actually tried normal attacking (not jump attacking) which OFC did nothing lol. Gotta look at DW3/4 for the epic hax AI

nonetheless, hopefully I'll see tons and tons of big battles, some look really really small.
Its lu bu no one dares attack him!! lol well it looked like he was on a pretty easy mode
easy mode on DW3/4 were much harder, (only played 4, not sure about 3, but seems like it's the hardest one?)

Well too bad Deng Ai's musou (or EX attack, can't tell) sucks hard lol.

well i hope sun ce has 3 stars with it!
Are you talking about his grapple musou where he
Spoiler: click to toggle

I thought that was pretty hardcore.
hardcore, but ****.

I hate when they make some EX attacks or musous crappy as hell, while others are uber.

>.>

Yup, now Sun Quan is not only NOT shafted, but overused in the story.

Yeah, Style names have meaning. Such as when I make characters with the character editors in previous games I always name one as Zhou Wei zi Kuangying.

Hey I have a question. Watching the stream with Liu Chan I saw him runnung around fighting in conquest mode with Taishi Ci and Guan Suo following him around the entire time. Does that mean that they were like bodygaurds or "companions" or what ever you call them? And if so does anyone know how many can you have with you on the battlefield at once?
