For all the Musou and OP fans out there who didnīt quite get into One Piece, want to start it or have left the field in the middle thanks to different circumstances, Manta Punk and I will do a series of information threads about One Piece to get you hyped and informed as well ![]() Itīll consist of 10 threads for now, starting with this "World of One Piece: Overview"-thread which serves as a short, as the name suggests overview, split up in Overall World and Powers (ruling powers and powers in general). The other ones will be the straw hats - Luffy. Zorro. Nami. Usopp. Sanji. Chopper. Robin. Franky. Brooke. Well then, letīs begin the journey! Created by Eiichirō Oda, the first One Piece Chapter was released back then August 4th 1997 in the magaizne "Weekly Shōnen Jump" and has now reached well over 630 chapters. The anime anime followed on October 20th 1999 and has reached over 510 episodes as of now. Itīs about the main characterīs (Luffy) journey to become the Pirate King and find a great treasure, the name giving One Piece. The world is filled with colorfull and deep individuals as well as crazy over the top creatures, enviroments and machines. Itīs full of mythological, musical, even political themes mixed in with the pirate setting and the Shounen genre aspects. Dinosaurs, Cyborgs, Skelettons, Talking Animals, Flying Ships, Mermaids, etc...it might seem a bit confusing at first, but itīs all explained why things are the way they are. First off all, the driving factor of this series: Kaizoku ou - Pirate King: Wealth. Fame. Power. The one who was said to have aquired all these things was none other than the Pirate King named Gol D. Roger or nicknamed "Gold Roger". The title of Pirate King was "given to him" after he conquered the Grand Line and entered the island Raftel, which seems to hold the great treasure One Piece. No one has reached that destination after Roger so far. He was later executed by the Marines and now the one to reach the end of the Grand Line and obtaining One Piece is said to be the next Pirate King. Hereīs the first and only pic of the mysterious last island Raftel: ![]() Dai kaizoku jidai - Great Age of Pirates The Great Age of Pirates started with the Pirate King Rogerīs execution, or moreso, his last words. At this point no one knew if the legendary treasure One Piece really existed, which is said to hold anything anyone can wish for. Before he died, Roger said that he left all his treasures and all that he obtained, namely One Piece, in that place, which is the end of the Grand Line, the island Raftel. The famous scene of his last words: Spoiler: click to toggle Overall World ![]() This map is a short overview of the world. The great line of land you see on it, the Red Line, cuts the world vertically in two, while the blue line, the Grand Line, cuts the world horizontal in two. Thus the ocean is divided into four parts called North, South, East and West Blue. East Blue is the part where Gol D. Roger and Luffy were born in, which is ironically called the weakest out of the four oceans. But hey, how can water divide water? Why not just jump in at a random point on the Grand Line, why go through all of it? Grand Line ![]() As you can see in this picture, the Grand Line is surrounded by yet another line, called the Calm Belt. The Calm Belt deserves itīs name seeing as there are no waves and no wind. So basically a ship is stranded once it enters there. The next thing that prevents someone from entering the Calm Belt are the Sea King nests, which are nests filled with giant fishmonsters that can gulp a ship as a whole. Even if someone who has a huge ship and is strong enough to beat every single monster, heīd just end up nowhere. The magnetic interference in the Grand Line renders compasses and any sort of orientation useless, so even if you enter the Grand Line, youīll end up nowhere. So the only way to enter the Grand Line is via the, in this picture falsely named, Reverse Mountain. Each ocean has itīs own entrance. Itīs a one way current that drags you up the mountain and drops you at the beginning of the Grand Line. Problem with that is, as I said, itīs a one way current. And that towards the Red Line, so basically if you hit a wrong current you crash right into that massive line of land, should you manage to enter the entrance on the other hand, thereīs no turning back. Terror of the Grand Line There are allready some problems surrounding and entering the Grand Line, but being there is no piece of cake either. Sudden changes in climate, storms, giant Sea Kings that leave the Calm Belt to hunt there...without a sturdy ship, a strong crew and a superb Navigator, you are doomed there. Also thanks to the mentioned climate problems as well as the magnetic fields there, orientation via normal means is impossible. Only way to find your way through that crazy maze is a... Log Pose There are two types of Logs - Log Pose and Enternal Pose. ![]() ![]() Each island has itīs own magnetic pull. So the different fields interfere with a nomal compass, but a Log Pose is different. It picks up the nearest islands field and points toward it. Once youīve reached that island, the Pose adjusts to the islands magnetic field and then picks up the next islandīs "signal". Though problem with that is, that it takes different amounts of time for a Pose to adjust. On one island it only takes only a day, on anothers a week and on yet another it might take 10 years. The second one, Enternal Pose, is as the name suggests a Log Pose that eternally keeps track of one islandīs magnetic pull. So no matter where you are on the Grand Line, youīll always be able to find your way to this island and only this island. ![]() Once someone enters the Grand Line, their Pose will automatically pick up a "signal" out of seven different islands, which results in seven possible routes one has to take. Grand Line Halves Paradise and New World Those seven routes refer to the first half of the Grand Line, namely Paradise. This is the start, which is entered via Reverse Mountain. Once youīve cleared one of the seven routes, youīll end up on an island called Sabaody Archipelago, which is close to the second half of the Grand Line called New World. Even though Paradise is still a nightmare of a sea, to those who have been in the New World, itīs like Paradise, hence the name. To enter the New World, you have to coat your ship with a special type of bubble made out of the resin from the Yarukiman Mangroves as there is no entrance to it like the one on Reverse Mountain. Youīll have to go underwater and go past the Red Line through Fishman Island. Grand Line Islands As Iīve mentioned each Island has itīs own magnetic field and itīs own place on the different routes of the Grand Line. Added to that, each Island has itīs own climate, which is broken down into four types: Summer, Spring, Autumn and Winter Islands. ![]() Seeing as each Island is surrounded by itīs own climate, the different types clash and thus unnatural phenomenons occur, like sudden-cyclones or whirlpools the size of a country. Once you are near an island the climate becomes stable. The seasons on those islands are a bit different, meaning even in Summer a Winter island is damn cold. So once youīre near one, it might suddenly start to snow. Iīve also mentioned Dinosaurs and Cyborgs at the beginning and thatīs thanks to all that. Stable climates, each owns magnetic field, even itīs own flow of time, some not being touched by humanity thanks to itīs placing on the Grand Line...so some might have allready developed enhanced technologies, while others are still in a prehistoric state filled with extinct creatures and plants. There are also Sky Islands, which are on a special kind of cloud that enables people to walk and live on it. ![]() Tomorrow weīll put up the next Overview thread, called Powers, explaining the ruling powers and the major races in One Piece as well as the second part of it, fighting powers like the Devil Fruits and the Rokushiki. |
