This worries and troubles me, because once again it seems like America is trying to be the internet police of the world. I hear that apparently MU had servers in America, which allowed them indict them, but the fact that they were arrested while in NZ does not sit well with me.

Luckily most of the stuff I had up on Megaupload were years old and no longer relevant, but there's one or two things I'm going to have to find another home for. :/

This bothers me now, they got rid of MU and at the same time, we lost our KOEI BGMs.

I hope they dont get to shut down Photobucket or Imageshack because WE WILL LOOSE ALL OF OUR RENDERS.

From what I can tell, Megaupload took down the site willingly? Maybe not... I haven't been able to load it at all, and some places have said there's a notice on the page when you do.

Image sharing places are fine; it'd be stupid to try to go after them, because people use them for sharing photos of family, vacations, events, etc and it's quite obvious. You can't really "pirate" photos, which is what they went after MU for.

There's about 30 other services that offer the same service as Megaupload in various ways.

Wow. Just, wow.

This actually makes me somewhat worried about that censorship bill getting passed. Good thing I already have all the koei soundtracks, I guess.

Well, it certainly didn't take long for Anonymous to react:

Not being able to download KW OSTs annoys me as well. However, I'm certain our Site Staff members will find another site where all OSTs can be downloaded. Just be patient, everyone.

It was taken down by the federal government, the founder of MU and six other persons and two companies have all been indicted(4 have been arrested) and face up to 50 some years in prison.

MU has responded appropriately to reports of illegal uploads in the past, and they offered to work with the content industry in providing services for them and the like. The content industry responded by siccing the FBI on them and arresting people who aren't even US citizens.

Megaupload has been a superior choice to many other online file storage services since they had immediate DL cues(no waiting for 30 seconds before your item downloads or having to wait an hour between files), no limit on file sizes and very fast bandwidth. Mediafire, one of the other excellent services out there, has a file limit of 200mb. The two FSs(FileSonic and FileShare) both have slow bandwidth, captcha, and copious ads.

So Megaupload is the first casualty of SOPA.

If the blackout isn't enough, I hope this is to finally get people to pay attention.

May Megaupload rest in peace. We are approaching a dark age for the internet folks. With SOPA and the loss of useful sites such as Megaupload we must be vigilant and openly protest such actions. I only fear that the common people will not know of whats at stake due to sheer ignorance. Hecks thats one of the reason why SOPA has gained so much ground....

Sadly I don't think the general public will care about Megaupload.

Only if something major like Youtube, Twitter or Facebook being taken down will whip the public into a raging frenzy.

2012 is indeed the end of the world...wide web.

So MU has gone down as the first victim of SOPA? The original MU server is not even in America! This government has gone insane, really. Yet people from other countries such as NZ has been indicted and arrested. I really hope U.S. gets nuked internet style in similar contrast to what they did to Japan back in WWII. U.S. just thinks they have too much power going around arresting people not part of their country.

SOPA hasn't passed. It really doesn't have much to do with this. Looking at the various news articles on it, it's an operation that's been going on for about a year.

I don't agree with the decision to arrest non US citizens, and they arrested the graphic designer of all people, who has nothing to do with operation of the site. That's completely wrong and it's very troubling that America is somehow able to police the Internet even without SOPA or PIPA under their belts.

Yeah, MU always removed content when they were alerted to it, and it's a huge violation of privacy to assume they can go through the accounts of all their users to check "just in case" like I've seen people suggest. What they have against them, though, is the incentive program where they actually paid people for having links that were popular. And yeah SRS, I know that they don't have captcha or wait times (though they did in the past! I remember being pleased when they stopped that). Mediafire's got the file limit and they've started doing this annoying then when you try to download more than one file at a time or too close to each other. That stupid popup has almost frozen my browser, ugh...

Also something important. If you see a link to Megavideo.bz, do not click it. Apparently it's actually routing your clicks into a DDOS attack.

Sometimes I hate the sorry state the US has become. And I don't even live there -_-

Wait from what I've been reading here, they arrested people that weren't even from the States? Why? How can they do that? This is just..... ugh. Screw the American government trying to take over the internet <_<
