We all the story. Xiahou Ba, son of Xiahou Yuan, decided to flee Wei after the usurpation of his relative, Cao Shuang, by the Sima Clan. He only could flee to the land of Shu, who were his father's killers. The majority of the clan was then disowned by many due to his actions. During his time in Shu, people constantly made fun of him and took him as joke. His last mention in history was where he helped the Shu forces at the battle of Didao and gained momentum before it turned into a quagmire for Jiang Wei and he died shortly after that. Now, this act is usually seen as cowardly and a disgrace to the Xiahou Clan. Maybe he was just an senile old man since he was in his late 60's when he did this. However, was it the best thing that he could of done? If he had stayed, the Simas probably and would of recalled and not let him out of their grasps. He was a relative of Cao Shuang, the biggest enemy of Sima Yi, and by definition would be against the Simas as well. Maybe his name would of protected him from death during Sima Yi's regency but certainly not from Shi and especially Zhao, both of whom executed many of their father's followers and the families of those followers as well. Thus, maybe in the short term it was better but not in the long run. It was also probably a personal disgrace serving the family that just ousted the rulers that his father and others died for so probably he couldn't stand that. Next there was the path of rebellion; where he could of started a revolt against the Simas. This could of course, would of been the same thing as what happened in Shouchun and he would of had to rely on Shu if ever had a chance to succeed. Then the outcome would be fleeing if he survived or death of him and his family by treasonous actions. Finally, there would the political means of gossip, slander and assassination but again it had a low chance. The Simas stand out as really paranoid men. Could you imagine if this guy, whose family and comrades you just had killed, was suddenly being friendly to you? Not to mention, they were in control of the court so they could easily of countered him that way. Personally I think that fleeing from Wei was probably the best thing that Xiahou Ba could of done. I could be totally wrong and if you have something else to say or add or if I got something wrong, please share. Edited by Paragon of Light, Sun Jun 3, 2012 7:05 am.

I doubt the fall of Xiahou Xuan and others, who were like Xiahou Ba already being recalled, was due to Xiahou Ba.
Really? Most in my experience seem to think well of Xiahou Ba and understand why he rebelled then fled. I can understand and agree with what Xiahou Ba did. There he is commanding in the west when suddenly the most senior man of the imperial family, bar the child Emperor, is overthrown and killed. Along with several other members of the government and the Cao clan. This is a state of affairs that must have unnerved a lot of officials around the kingdom, even when they weren't of the Xiahou line. Then to suddenly be recalled from a position of safety and told to head into the capital, where the Sima's have control? Xiahou Xuan only believed he was safe as long as his old friend Sima Yi was alive and that he would die under Yi's sons, Xiahou Ba had no such protection. If he went to the capital, he could die and at best his career was probably over. So I think he was right to try to fight then flee what that failed. Edited by Dongzhou, Mon Jun 4, 2012 10:13 pm.

What I meant by the disowning of the Xiahou Clan was relationships and other types like were being cut off. This I got off of Yang Hu's bio since he remained loyal to his wife. And the act being seen as cowardly is just the reaction to the dw7 game which didn;t give the full story as you know. Also could I get a link or something about Xiahou Xuan and he knew he was alive as long as Zhongda was alive? Thanks for the insight and info and correctly any mistakes I made with the post. |
