http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1204047--canada-accuses-un-of-making-robert-mugabe-tourism-ambassador-withdraws-from-body

Due to an acknowledgement and honouring of Robert Mugabe, dictator and leader of Zimbabwe, as a leader for tourism, Canada has officially issued a withdrawal from the UN body, citing this as the last straw from the often called corrupt and ineffectual organization.

Robert Mugabe seized power in Zimbabwe in a violent coup against the white minority government. He has since led the country from a period of relative prosperity into a period of economic ruin as well as mass starvation and an almost non-existant level of employment for the people. He has been accused of numerous crimes against humanity for his excessively and monstrously violent approach to silencing political dissent and has been noted as having a genocidal hatred of whites and homosexuals. He has a travel veto against him throughout America and most of Europe, and has been the target of widespread international criticism, including comparisons to Hitler.

Oppinions/thoughts on the idea of countries taking a stand against the UN, or of the UN's honouring of Mugabe?

Why exactly is the UN recognizing Mugabe by giving him a international tourism ambassador position? Do they have a reason or is this as stupid as it sounds?

I'm not surprised, the UN honoured Kim Jong Il when he died. Western nations boycotted it but most Eastern nations honoured it. This was a man who put the army first instead of his people, spends resources on building a nuclear program and constantly made threats to South Korea and the world.

On a slightly different note, we have Syria who the UN pretty much allows the killing to continue but happily give the green light to bomb Libya.

We also have Authoritarian style governments with permanent seats in the UNSC who vetoes any "western intervention" of "liberating" Syria. I mean the violence continues even with monitors in the country...

Seriously...

He's hosting the next general assembly for the UN Tourism World Organization. Yeah.

The UN is garbage. I remembered when everyone did nothing but criticize George Bush for basically telling them to stuff it, but dammit, that what world leaders need to do, tell the UN it can't protect people like this. I'm glad we're finally cutting out, but it took far too long.

Robert Mugabe is the recognized head of state of Zimbabwe. The Canadians and the Americans practically gave him a medal and loaded on praise calling him part of the "new generation of leaders" and a whole host of honorary degrees were showered on him in the 80s. He still has some of them. The criticisms started to flare up after Mugabe actually became less harsh in his despotic, and frankly racist, rule over the country.

Now that Mugabe is recognized as a "head of state" and gave him a letter of recognition as such along with three other heads of states neighboring him and other leaders around the world, Canada wants to withdraw from the U.N.?

At least be consistent. Don't praise a guy for a launching a coup, threatening civil war if he doesn't win an election, and seizing properties and arresting political opponents only to condemn him decades later for being a corrupt leader who stuffs election boxes and curtails some freedoms.

Its hard to make up.
