Gundam Musou sales analysis in Japan. Gundam Musou is the result of a monumental collaboration between two great companies, Namco Bandai and Koei Tecmo. Gundam Musou is developed by KOEI's Omega Force development team and published by Namco Bandai. The series is similar to the Dynasty Warriors series but in the Gundam games the storyline revolves around the Gundam universe. Gundam Musou was originally released for PS3 (and later XboX 360 and PS2) in Japan on March 1st 2007. Gundam games have always been popular in Japan and this game was no exception. Paired with the fast action of Dynasty Warriors, Gundam Musou sold around 355,000 units on PS3/360 and 305,000 units on PS2. This takes the combined total to over 660,000 units sold in Japan. A total of 700,000 units were shipped by Koei. Gundam Musou 2 released on 18th December 2008 on PS3/360/PS2 and saw increased sales on the next gen versions with over 435,000 units sold. The PS2 version saw 250,000 units sold which was a 18% drop compared to the original game. This is understandable due to the age of the PS2 and the fact that more people were buying PS3 games. The PS3 version of Gundam Musou 2 outsold the original game and allowed sales to reach over 675,000 combined. The same as the first game. Total sales reached 1.4m in Japan between GM1 and GM2. Gundam Musou 3 was released in Japan on 16th of December 2010 on PS3 and Xbox 360. This was the first title to not see a release on PS2 as well. Despite the growing numbers, Gundam Musou 3 only sold on par with GM2 with around 420,000 units. I would have expected those who bought the PS2 version last time to buy the PS3 version this time to increase GM3 numbers to more than that of GM2. However this was not the case and Gundam Musou 3 only sold 420,000 units combined. A huge drop in combined totals from both the first two games. However it was fairly average when comparing to just PS3/360 sales. Shin Gundam Musou is due to be released next week and Namco Bandai have released their lifetime projection figures of 350,000 units for the PS3 version and 150,000 units for the PSV version. It is worth noting that no Xbox 360 version will be released for this game. I think that Namco Bandai should hit their target for PS3 based on current projections based on past games and pre order numbers. However their Vita target seems to be unachievable and i feel that in this case they will only ship less than 100,000 units total for PS Vita at a push. They may not even reach 100,000. My prediction for Shin Gundam Musou is over 310,000 for PS3 and over 70,000 for PS Vita leading to a combined total of 380,000 units. EDIT: Looks like i was way off, PS3 so far has sold 200k, PSV has sold 100k, however combined it should still get to 380k. So prediction was ok, just underestimated power of Vita. The Gundam Musou series has shipped over 1.80m units in Japan and almost 3 million worldwide.

Very nice observation on Shin GW, but I don't think most people of interest could find this if it's posted in a wrong subforum. Mind if I split this post and move it to the GW forum? ![]() I have this feeling though that Shin GW's sales for the early weeks might drop below that expectation, perhaps even falling short of 300k PS3 sales..
So with the hype level being abysmal like this, I'll be very surprised if it still manages to surpass 200k PS3 sales despite this total lack of information. PSV-wise, I've seen quite a lot of tweets on Twitter where quite many people are considering to get Shin GW on PSV, so I wonder if it could surpass or at least match One Piece PW2's PSV sales. I think it was like 50k-ish sales on the first week? |

Some interesting points. I do agree that the hype and sales potential for this game is nowhere near the level of previous Gundam games. I also think that there has been a slight over saturation in Gundam games with one coming out last month and one coming out next month. And both of them are just as popular if not more popular than the musou series. And yeh, namco bandai sales estimates are way too high for PS Vita. PS3 sales shouldn't be too far off and I do think they will reach more than 300k eventually. What makes you think they wont even reach 200k? Although having a look at current projections I don't think they'll open at what GM3 opened at which was 185k. Maybe Somewhere around the 120k mark. PSV at 40k max. And yes, feel free to split these 3 posts into a new topic. I will be doing one for Samurai Warriors 4 as well next year before release date. |

They really should have hyped it a ton more. If sales are low it's because of the sales and PR team didn't do their job and the development team will sadly be blamed.

If the game's sales are poor, I would also place the blame on the dev team alienating 80% of the fanbase by only pandering to one show. |

I could see Koei's dev team getting the blame too, but the actual blame on that should be more directed towards the planning team in Bandai, since they must be the ones that decide which series, characters & MS to be added. Koei just gets that list from them and develops things based on it.

I just hope it sells well enough for Bandai to contemplate about making a decent sequel next time round. Maybe 400k for both titles at least? Seeing the huge SEED addition maybe a bit more for Japan. Not sure about the West though.

Yup. Namco Bandai are the publishers and as such are in charge of the game. Omega Force just develop the game for them using their LTGL game engine. Edited by ZhugeEX, Tue Dec 17, 2013 3:53 pm.

http://www.4gamer.net/games/117/G011794/20131225061/ First week sales figures known PS3 - 126,019 PSV - 52,667 Total - 178,786 Maybe for lifetime sales that might mean this would barely reach 350k at best. But not to also mention that it technically only have 1 more month to boost sales because obviously it'll be cut short by the release of the much more hyped Gundam Extreme VS Full Boost. ![]() Gundam Musou 3 first week sales on PS3: 190,293 http://www.famitsu.com/biz/ranking/ Famitsu Figures: PS3 - 113,493 - Sales ratio medium-high (60%-80%) PSV - 48,899 - Sales ratio high (over 80%) Total - 162,392 Hmm most likely a combined lifetime of 300k then. Looks like they might've succeeded their plan for PSV though? Edited by BlackKite, Wed Dec 25, 2013 2:33 pm.

Close enough with my predictions. Although really impressed and surprised with PS Vita sales. Should be able to hit 100,000 with some ease with opening figures like that. Worth noting that Famitsu have lower sales figures than media create. And Famitsu is more trusted. I wonder if Dengeki will reflect close to the two trackers above^ I'll type up a report with all three trackers figures inc averages tomorrow. |

So for the Media Create figures, PS3: 126,019 - sales ratio 71.29% (shipping prediction 176,769) PSV: 52,667 - sales ratio 85.20% (shipping prediction 61,815) Compared with GW3's PS3 first week sales.. 198,000 - sales ratio 57.89% (shipping prediction 342,027) So apparently the sales base might have already been shrinking earlier than we thought, and that they already lowered the expectations beforehand...

I guess they figured Seed would help bring the series back, but it didn't help as much as they hoped At this point they're going to have to do something big to draw the Gundam fans back in for the next game, like start dipping into rare mangas and side stories and giving much more attention to grunt units like promoting them all to Class 2 or even 1. Maybe even add color customization and more RPG elements. They've got to do something that the VS series doesn't. On top of that, they need to bring back the well written crossover story from the first game. They don't think the SRW series got so popular from its gameplay, do they? Shin Gundam Musou opens with 170,000 units sold through Shin Gundam Musou sells over 170,000 units during it's first week across PS3/PSV. As expected the game has sold nowhere near the past 3 games for the opening week. The reasons for this have been mentioned above by blackkite, myself and others. Gundam Musou 3 originally opened with 190,000 units across PS3. Shin Gundam Musou has seen a 35% drop. According to Media Create, Namco Bandai shipped 175,000 units for PS3 and 62,000 units for PSV (237,000 units combined). According to the averages below, this results in a ~70% sell through for PS3 and ~81% sell through for PSV version. I expect Namco Bandai to ship a further 120,000 units in to the channel leading to 360,000 units shipped lifetime across PS3/PSV with a 70/30 split to PS3. Including digital sales I think the game can reach over 390,000 units. I wasn't expecting the split between PS3 and PS Vita to be so close. In fact I am very surprised at how well the PSV version has done. Playstation 3 Media Create- 126,000 Famitsu- 114,000 Dengeki- 122,000 Average- 121,000 Playstation Vita Media Create- 53,000 Famitsu- 49,000 Dengeki- 49,000 Average- 51,000 TOTAL: 172,000 |

I check some websites who sells japanese video games ... And ... seems the game is out or order everywhere ! Play-asia, nin nin games, amazon and I suppose some other (not check yesasia nor nippon yasan). Game is out or order/stock. But I have to admit, the game is awesome for both platform. If you have a PSV, you MUST have this game. No need to compare DW8+XL vita, shin gundam musou is better in term of gfx and gameplay |

Shin Gundam Musou sells through over 300,000 units The "New" Dynasty Warriors Gundam game which was released in Japan last month has now sold through over 300,000 units in Japan. Over 200,000 units have been sold for the PS3 version and over 100,000 units have been sold for the PSV version. This information is according to Media Create and Dengeki. This information is correct as of 12 of January 2014. The game is now on it's way to sell over 350,000 units and possibly even hit 400,000 units at a stretch. Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 sold 395,000 units on PS3 and 25,000 units on Xbox 360 leading to a combined total of 420,000. It's clear that PS3 sales haven't been that strong this time around but the combined might of PS3 and PSV seem to be matching DWG3 PS3 sales. As of 4 weeks sales, SGM has sold 300,000 units. DWG3 had sold through 320,000 units on the PS3 in this same time frame. Therefore, i am sure that SGM can exceed 350k on PS3 and PSVita combined. Please note that sales figures above for SGM do not include digital download figures. I will update these when we get info through. Edited by ZhugeEX, Mon Jan 20, 2014 4:11 am.

Hopefully it doesn't beat 3's sales. I don't think it will. But the Vita is kind of popular in Japan. Maybe this would show them to make an actual game the next time. |

I'm surprised by how well the PS Vita version is doing in comparison to the PS3 version. I was sure the game wouldn't do that well on Vita but it seems that the game isn't actually doing that well on PS3 and is doing better than expected on Vita. I can see this trend continuing for Sengoku Musou 4 where PS3 sales are down but PS Vita sales are fairly stable and carry the game. But as you say, I don't think this game will beat GM3 sales. And it'll get nowhere near Namco Bandai's projection of 500,000 units. Edited by ZhugeEX, Mon Jan 20, 2014 12:14 am.

So for a record of the PS3 lifetime sales of more past series, GW1: 317,580 GW2: 328,167 Maybe I could see Shin GW's combined lifetime sales to surpass these, but I think it'll just cap out at 350k at best. I don't think it'll surpass GW3's 385k either.. |

From what Ive seen the game runs decently well on vita so Im not too surprised it's doing pretty well there. Though I dont agree with hoping it sells less than 3 just because Im more worried that would more likely have them second guess doing another than have them put more work into a future. Imo it would be better to hope it sells decently but make sure the complaints are heard by the company so it knows what to improve. |

Just to say, my figures at the top of the page for GW ps3 sales include re releases and BEST releases which is why the figures are higher than the ones you've posted. So DWG1 shipped 320,000 units first, the PS3 BEST re release shipped 15,000 units leading to 335,000 units across PS3 combined. DWG2 shipped 330,000 units first, the 30th anniversary edition and the BEST edition shipped 35,000 units combined leading to cumulitive sales of 365,000 sales. DWG3 shipped 385,000 units first on PS3, the best edition shipped 10,000 units leading to 395,000 units sold combined. Also note we are missing digital sales so I think over 350k is a given for SGM3. At a stretch it could exceed DWG2 sales on ps3 and even hit 400k with re releases + digital sales. |
