Your views on the political situation in the US?

Personally, I feel that the US is hiding things from their citizens and covering it up with celebrity bull****. I remember watching the news for the first time in years and they were interviewing someone from the NSA, IIRC, and they interrupted it to talk about how JB was arrested.

But that's not even what I was concerned about the most. What I was concerned about was how they didn't say anything about how Ukraine's people rebelled against their government AT ALL. And when the Million Mask March happened on November 5th 2013, all they showed was even more celebrity garbage. Corporate media's only intention is to keep us stupid about what's really going on.

That's what I think about it. What I want to know is what you guys think of the political situation in the US. Is the government hiding things or are they totally trustworthy?

Oh, and one more thing: Posted Image

(my post was originally a lot larger but I cut down because some of the stuff I wrote didn't seem relevant)

Of course the government has something to hide, (which government doesn't?) Area 51 immediately springs to mind and they will go to great lengths to contain its secrets. If you happen to be very close to the base they will monitor your every move and will even shoot you if you just step over the line. Even if you use the 'Freedom of Information act' you'll be denied or ignored.

The whole NSA thing is just amusing, ever since Snowden revealed stuff other nations (including their OWN allies) got so paranoid that they immediately summoned US ambassadors and other officials to clarify. I can somewhat grasp the need to obtain information on other nations (even though it's distasteful) what I don't understand the need why you need to spy on your OWN citizens? It doesn't stop terrorism or acts of espionage at all.

In honesty, the American political system (and most Democratic countries) need reforming. If they want it to be a beacon of 'freedom' and such then surely they'd benefit from using the Swiss system? Another thing they should do is do away with 'state laws' and just use national ones, there's too many loopholes because of it.

Seems to be three strands to Crusader14's post.

1) Government secrecy: Of course they do. Secret services, offical secrets acts (or whatever the American equivalent is), diplomacy, so and so on. The problem is that without effective oversight (and at least America is trying to address the issues brought by Snowden, unlike the UK), secretive elements can fail to see where the line is.

2) Media. If one has commercial media, they need to sell papers or get audience numbers. They know their audience (Fox is not going to do pro-Democrat, anti-Gun, pro-Green for example) and people are interested in celebrity stuff. So they do celebrity stuff as people like celebrities. The media wants to survive and be followed, if they thought there was a big enough audience for non-celeb, 24 hour a day intellectualism then they would do that.

On Ukraine (probably a bit too much to call it Ukraine's people, more a group), I have talked to enough US people about it so surprised to hear the news didn't cover it. Why not? Same reason the British media don't cover certain foreign stories. They have to whittle down hundreds or thousands of news stories around the world to 1) ones that are relevant, 2) likely to lead to bigger things (which is where failure to coverage is a mistake, 3) interest. With all due respect to Ukraine, a protest of certain groups in Ukraine is a big deal to Russia and EU, I can't see it being generally a concern for the US people.

As much as I hate the (English) press, I doubt there is a conspiracy in American media to keep the people stupid. The more simple explanations seem more likely.

3) The two party system: I'm from a country that has something (though not anywhere near as bad) of a 2 party system and were people will vote for someone as "my father and grandfather always voted for". That sort of blind thinking does also seem an issue there.

With only two parties, that can lead to them simply being able to out-resource and out-experience any challengers, it takes a challenging party long time for a party to build up to be a considerable figure in terms of elected officials. Taking the blind idealogical portion of the portion, people will vote tactically so that is also an issue for outside parties. Why vote Green (for example) if they aren't going to win? seems to be a major attitude.

Meanwhile the larger parties will evolve and change, factions will win out then be broken with new factions and new leaders coming through. So those voting for Democrat (or Republican) will be voting for a different party in some periods then in others even if they don't know it.

4) Then the final bit. Yes America needs reform, all countries do and it will take time I suspect. Maybe a third party will appear but will likely take decades to build up, maybe the changing natures of the old parties will see that threat off. Maybe the backlash over Snowden and some of the War on Terror backlash will see things changed on the secret services part. My concern about American politics would be elsewhere though I would include clamping down on the spooks.
