I know that there is a pre-order thread already, but I feel that this topic merits the discussion that we are about to have. I have a nose for stereotypical BS, and what I saw last week sure broke the meter. Here is the story. Sicboy, the person who does the Anarchist Collective youtube channel, has recently come on record about EA's use of the Bruce Lee license, and quite honestly, became hypocritical in his stance with the company. In the past, before they won the golden poo award two years in a row, EA would hide their games behind their origin system and microtransactions, and rightly be jumped on for it. With the upcoming release of the UFC game, EA will be providing a instant unlock code to those who have pre-ordered the game (I'm going to pre-order the game regardless), to unlock the legendary martial artist in multiple weight classes. Sure, you could buy the game day one and earn him the hard way, but Sicboy's point is that EA is trying to inflate pre-orders. Excuse me? The point of pre-ordering is to guarantee a sale based on press and word of mouth that the game is getting. Who cares when the game is purchased (before, at or after street date), a sale is a sale no matter when in the development cycle a game is actually released, and with pre-orders, you are assured a copy of the game, in some cases, you are moved to the front of the line in the off chance that the store runs out of copies. EA is not the first to offer a pre-order bonus, nor will they be the last. But you have to judge whether or not that the pre-order is worth the asking price. Am I wrong at all with speaking common sense? |

Well, from personal experience, I only pre-order games that I actually know about & want to buy. Saying that they (EA) are trying to "inflate" sales is kind of silly because of 2 major points: no one would pre-order it if they didn't know about it, and people pre-order because of the bonus content or whatever. Also, sometimes if you pre-order, the store can end up selling your copy to someone else (has happened to a friend). Sometimes people can be over analytical, but stores also have to compete with each other, so I think he's just voicing his opinion. |

That is sort of the point. It is sort of like a massive bend. Publishers are competing for your gaming dollars, and as such, they put together these pre-order bonuses to secure your future investment. Stores, on the other hand, get these pre-order bonuses from the publisher to offer to you if you pre-order from their store. As I have said earlier, pre-ordering pretty much assures your copy Day 1, and EA isn't the first to offer pre-order bonuses. But to go out and say that pre-ordering a title that you know has a good track record (Metal Gear does it for me), and it comes with a pre-order bonus that is good for no real reason other than it is Publisher A is usually full of it. |
