I haven't seen a thread like this, but I've been very inactive on these forums so I apologize if one exists and I overlooked it. I thought I would share a few ideas about interesting counterparts for DW and SW characters, and I was wondering who everyone else thinks would make good companions or rivals within the context of KOEI's games, other fictional works, legends, and actual history. So without further ado, in no particular order: 1. Uesugi Kenshin and Xu Huang I think these two would make for good rivals/allies with a high level of mutual respect. Both are devoted warriors infamous for mastering the art of war, and their physical appearances in games have been very similar. KOEI has obviously been aware of their similarities, even having Kenshin disguise as Xu Huang in his crossover DLC outfit for WO3. However, they seem to relate Kenshin more with Guan Yu as they share the God of War monicker, and Xu Huang is shown as more of a rival for Musashi due to their similar martial prowess. Their differences lie in the way they play, with Xu Huang being a heavy duty crowd-clearer and Kenshin requiring more precision to maximize his effectiveness, and also Kenshin being in possession of more responsibilities as leader of his clan. In the context of the WO universe, I could see Xu Huang leaving Wei to temporarily join the Uesugi clan (with autonomy) to fight demonic armies as part of a pilgrimage, and quickly rising to become Kenshin's most valued ally. 2. Zhang Liao and Miyamoto Musashi Okay, a lot of people might disagree with this one. I honestly didn't really consider this until KOEI gave Zhang Liao's DW7 outfit to Musashi as a crossover DLC costume, but it made sense to me. The reason I think they would make for good (albeit friendly) rivals is because they are both highly accomplished warriors and, like Kenshin and Xu Huang, are masters of war. While Zhang Liao has accomplished far more on the battlefield than Musashi, the latter is more recognizable due to his accomplishments later in life as a duelist. As far as history dictates, these are two individuals that no man would want to meet on the battlefield. Although I realize it's a loose association, Musashi was one of the greatest warriors in Japan, while Zhang Liao was one of the greatest warriors of the Three Kingdoms, said to surpass even Lu Bu. In recent games, both dual-wield weapons that they have been infamous for in history - Musashi with his sword and an oar, referencing his historic duel with Kojiro, and Zhang Liao with a pair of poleaxes/halberds in reference to his actions at Hefei. Given their age and experience difference as of WO however, I see Musashi looking up to Zhang Liao rather than having an intense rivalry between the two. 3. Zhang Fei and Honda Tadakatsu Tadakatsu has always been compared with Zhang Fei, although as far as gameplay and game story goes, he's usually a more imposing figure. KOEI has made references to this rivalry/friendship ever since mentioning Tadakatsu's nickname as "Zhang Fei of Japan" in SW2, even though since the first WO, Tadakatsu's main rivalry was against Lu Bu. But their similarities are uncanny. Zhang Fei's actions at Changban and Tadakatsu's at Mikatagahara, their respective loyalty to Liu Bei and Tokugawa Ieyasu, their daughters, and even their borderline arrogance. While Tadakatsu comes off as a more composed individual, his quips are often times just as boastful as Zhang Fei's, though neither reaches Lu Bu's level of arrogance. The two of them even satisfy similar roles in the games, especially WO3U, both being excellent crowd control tanks. Their main difference is that while Tadakatsu is always portrayed as a tactical genius and a trusted adviser to Ieyasu, Zhang Fei comes off as more headstrong in fiction compared to his brothers - even though historically, he was more accomplished than Guan Yu. Nevetheless, legends speak highly of both of them in terms of military might and loyalty. I can see Zhang Fei and Tadakatsu as drinking buddies and occasional arm wrestling rivals. As far as trying to kill each other however, KOEI may have been spot on with the Tadakatsu vs. Lu Bu rivalry. 4. Inahime and Xingcai Not much to say here, as this is an extension of my previous comparison. Both are heavily fictionalized in their video game portrayals, but they are similar in being fierce and loyal warriors who take after their fathers. There's not much similar in terms of their play style and weaponry, but in that regard they actually compliment each other very well: one is an archer, while the other wields a shield and sword. I was always disappointed in their choices for love interests though, which is perhaps why for the longest time, I thought they would make for a good couple together... *ahem* Honorable mentions (I can expand on these if people aren't tired of my rambling, but most are self explanatory) Zhou Yun and Sanada Yukimura Oda Nobunaga and Cao Cao Ma Chao and Azai Nagamasa Takeda Shingen and Pang Tong Sun Jian and Hojo Ujiyasu Kaihime and Sun Shang Xiang Zhou Tai and Kotaro Fuuma *Susano'o and Yinglong *I'm cheating with the last one, but they respectively embody the most generic yet effective move sets for SW and DW.
