Hello!

I'm a huge fan of KOEI's warriors, and now I'm going to play some Gundam games. Have never read or watched any Gundam-related media.

The question is: are the story modes of the games different, or they are more or less identical, like stories in majority of DW or SW series? If the latter, which game is better (putting aside that the gameplay is improved in the newer games)?

Thank you!

the answer to the question is both yes and no

the Gundam series has 2 different story modes most of the time, Official and Original

Official tells the "historical" storyline of the Gundam series, basically if you saw the anime it will be exactly like that, this mode is only available for very select few of the gundam series that the game has, character wise less than half of the cast that is playable in this mode, and since it's anime-faithful, the story gets repeated on the next game too, but usually added some more details that was not present in the previous game

the 2nd mode is Original mode where everyone is mixed together into one big crossover like Warriors Orochi, the story is always different between games, the 3rd game only has this mode and no Official mode

as for which game is better, story wise,

for Official mode, i think the 2nd game is pretty good, tho the 4th game is not bad too

the 1st game is the best in terms of Original mode, it's story is just superior to the rest of the series, with tons of scenes happening per-stage and everyone playable got the same importance, nobody gets sidelined

So if I want to play only unique stories, my schedule is:
1: only original
2: only original
3: only original
4: official & original

In that case I will play through all the storylines without repetitions. Is that right?

not really, the Official Mode for ZZ Gundam is missing on the 4th game, it was present in the 1st and Second game

IMO if you are planing on getting and playing all 4 games i suggest you play all of them, even if the story is still generally the same(as in the ending will always be the same-ish), the stages are actually different, some of the stages/missions of the official mode for the 2nd game is missing on the 4th game(most notable the Texas Colony and Jaburo raids IIRC, the Himalayan campaign is also missing n the 4th game)

1: best original mode, okay official mode
2: okay original mode, best official mode
3: only original mode (but most fun gameplay out of all, in my opinion)
4: okay original mode, 2nd best official mode

Original = mixes all gundam series for "what if" scenarios
Official = play through the story of the anime
