I'd like to know what people's opinions of the Samurai Warriors series are. As I was browsing on Amazon today. Giving SW4 a look and deciding whether or not to buy the game. I've never really played any of the SW games before but I have played the character's in the Warriors Orochi games. So, that brings me to a question is the gameplay similar to that of the Dynasty Warriors games or is it different? |

Well I'd say if you enjoy the basic feel of both Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi then you'll likely love SW. In my opinion, SW has always played it safer than DW, which on one hand makes the series feel a bit more stale than DW, but on the other hand makes it feel much more polished than DW. Over the course of the SW series I don't feel like there has been much innovation, not like DW which has tried many different combat systems, weapon switch, open world, etc. SW1 won't play or feel all that different from SW4, at least not in terms of how it plays(story obvious feels different in each game). But as a result that's allowed the series to feel very concise and polished. Unlike DW games, many of which do something wrong for everything done right and feel much messier, SW games feel satisfying. Pretty much all characters are given decent time to shine, clones have never been an issue, story has never slacked, etc. The gameplay in SW is extremely similar to DW, although with the way the combat system works the movesets play out slightly different than the traditional DW charge system does. Also, as of SW4 there is the Godspeed combat system, which is a different, more fast-paced attack string using Triangle as a base and Square as charge attacks, which I found super fun. So final judgement is that yes since it seems you're a Warriors franchise fan you'll absolutely love SW, most likely no matter what. As for comparing it to DW, it depends if you prefer polish or innovation. If you prefer innovation you may find SW a little more stale over time(perhaps not at first since it's all new to you) and prefer DW. If you like your games to feel more complete and well-rounded and don't mind little change between installments and don't like when certain changes don't live up to what they were made out to be, you may prefer the more refined SW series. |

All I say is I started with SW1 and it was that game which brought me to this forum, and eventually introduced me to the DW series, starting with DW5. Been playing the games since then. Because DW played similar to SW, I was sold from then on. |

I started with DW4, but the first SW game got me hooked, and then SW2, and so on. I've been more of an SW series fan since, and my exposure to the DW cast was mostly through playing the Orochi games, so pretty much opposite end of you All of the games play pretty similarly, but there are plenty of subtle differences depending on how carefully you want to analyze the gameplay. Basic attack strings are all the same, but in SW4 they add Hyper attacks (Godspeed) which is a new set of moves based on mashing the Triangle button instead of square. In the original SW4 game, they're good for crowd clearing, not much else (officers block them). Also, some characters have their movesets changed up a bit from previous games ... Masamune, Ginchiyo, and Mitsuhide I can name off the top of my head who are now classified as Hyper-type characters. Special attacks aren't as powerful in SW4 as they are in WO, but Musou attacks are stronger. Some specials are still useful though (Nene and Naotora, for example). Story is pretty comprehensive from an overall Sengoku Era perspective, but if you have favorite characters who are outliers and not part of the major unification storyline, then prepare to watch them get left out Chronicle Mode is a fun little addition where you take a player-created character around Japan and write your name into history. Nothing special, many of the battles are repetitive, but its a nice little break from the more historic take on the period in Story Mode. |
