The new features; sidestepping, weapons...

MK4 tried to mix things up by adding some features. Was that enough to revamp the series?

Weapons. All of the characters had them. The fun part was that you could smack your enemy into the screen. And you could throw them as well, risking you'd lose it for the rest of the battle. I, for myself, ended up not using the weapons that much. This game was all about speed, en battering into your enemy as fast as you could.

Did you use the sidestep? When timed well, you could avoid object being throwed at you as well avoiding normal projectiles. I liked the idea, but it was hard to pull off.

Max damage. To avoid getting combos that took away all of your life bar, max damagewould knock you back. I don't know at how many % damage that was but I think it was before reaching up to 50%. Correct me if I'm wrong.

All in all, they try to keep things fresh. But I did not really think all went well. mk4 was fun and all, but it was not the huge step forward it's follow-up (MKDA) would be.

Well, the game where my favorite character debuted, though she was hated by many, saying she stole Kitana's spot, but she was easily the easiest to use to beat the whole game.

The game itself wasn't perfect, and is still considerred one of the worst game ever produced by an MK team.

One thing I hated was the max damage. With Tanya, it happened when the damage was like 47 or 48%. Cheap way to balance the damage. They should have come out with something else.

The graphics looked blockiest ever, and especially on the home port, the pixels really sucked.

The animated ending also, while the attempt was good, but the final outcome was laughable. Still I give them a credit for trying.

Weapons and side-stepping were an advance at the time, but I barely used them also.

But, overall, I will give the game a score of 4.5/10. The new kharacters suck, but only Quan Chi, Tanya, Reiko, and maybe Fujin have saved it from becoming a total garbage.

Well...

MK4 was revolutionary.
The Weapon feature really made me excited to play it, and the 3D sidestepping and arenas really tied in with the fatalities, which were also very detailed for that generation.
I loved it.

MK4 was actually my least favorite MK game of the fighters. It didn't feel 3D. In my head, I was visioning Tekken and was a bit disappointed. When it changed to DA, I liked that better. In MK4, I felt it was too easy to drop your weapon. I also didn't like many of the stages, as some felt like the same stage but slightly different.

I am such a big MK fan that I did buy my Dreamcast just for MKG. lol
