VECTOR TUTORIAL

Doing a vector is basically coloring using shapes. It’s an easy concept but you will need to be patient and have an eye for detail. That will determine how simple or how advanced your vector is.
We’ll be doing the picture below, however before you start you will need to know how to use the pen tool. Check this Tutorial.

Vectors are best done with High quality pictures

BASIC IDEA: look at each color/ tone and draw a custom shape outlining its shape using the pen tool. You can use shape layer or path technique
We’ll use shape layer because it’s easier to handle.

Open this picture

Duplicate the layer [ctrl J]
Posterize this layer. We’ll use it to get the different colors- it will be our color palette.

Image >> Adjustments >> Posterize >> Levels 7

You can go higher for more detail but I usually stick with 7 so it’s more realistic :]

Select your pen tool (which should have these settings)

Select the eyedropper tool and click on her arm [#ffd4aa]

Select your pen tool once again

Zoom in to the picture [Ctrl +] until you are able to outline her body with precision. I used 200%.

For better viewing hit the TAB button to get rid of the tool bar and so on and begin to outline her body.

Usually I work from base colors to highlights- but this is a simple tut so just select a main color

When you start to outline lower the opacity of the shape you are drawing so that you can see through it and properly outline.

Posted Image

When you’ve finished outlining, increase the opacity to 100% then hide the layer.

THE HAIR
Use the eye dropper tool and select a shade of her hair (from the posterized layer) or just choose black

Begin to outline her hair -using the technique you learned from Melissa.

When you’ve reached the mouth don’t get too neat we’re gonna cheat and rectify that later.

Hide the hair layer
THE DRESS
Alright so I’m not about to do that pattern so we’ll just drop her in a red dress.
Select the color red from the rim of her sun glasses on the posterize layer using the eyedropper tool.
Begin to outline the dress

Posted Image

Let’s re order the layers before we move on to the glasses
Drag the Hair layer above the Dress. Leave the skin layer where it is

Posted Image

Move on to the glasses.
==================
The GLASSES
Hide all layers except for the posterized layer of the original image.
Use the eyedropper tool and select a shade of red from the glasses. Outline the entire glasses not just the red part. It’s easier this way.
Make sure you lower the opacity so that you can see through it
Begin to outline
I find that just clicking around and getting the basic shape of the glasses then holding down ALT and adjusting the curves get’s a better finish

Posted Image

Let’s move on to the actual dark glass.
Select black and outline the larger glass. Then go to the option bar and select Add to Shape Area

Posted Image

Outline the other glass then switch back to what you were on before check the pic above

Hide all the other layers except for the black glass which I call darkers and the posterized layer

Create a new layer

Go to your color pallet and select this color [#9c8d8d]

[ctrl Click] on the DARKERS layer { the one you just created}

Get a soft brush size 41 and slowly fill the lower half of the selection with grey- this will give the illusion of refraction.

Make the DARKERS layer visible to see the effect

Posted Image

HIDE ALL LAYERS except for the posterized layer

HEADBAND

Its a lot of Red so let’s make this gold or any color you want really

Use your eyedropper tool and choose a color from the posterized

layer, or not- I used [#e9ad0c]

Get your pen tool and outline the headband just like you did the others. Remembering to lower the opacity so you can see.

Label the layer headband.

THE FACE!
Let’s give her some lips, teeth, and at least a nostril.
Make the SKIN layer visible because the lips will have to match the way you outlined the skin
Lower the opacity of the skin to about 58% so that you can see her lips as well as the outline of the skin.
Select Red>> Outline her lip>> Label Layer lips
Remember this layer should be on top of all the others.
You should have something like this with all layers visible

Posted Image

TEETH
Select white zoooom in and outline the lips label the layer lips….boy this is getting repetitive.

NOSTRIL
Zoom in to 1200% select this color #7f2a2a and outline as usual label nostril
Let’s go back and fix the lips and chin that we neglected earlier, now that we’ve basically finished.
Hide all layers ecept for the hair, skin
skin and posterized layers
Select the HAIR layer
Right click >> Rasterize Layer >> Ctrl Click on the SKIN layer so that the skin is being outlined by marching ants.
You must still be on the Hair Layer
Get your eraser set it to 19px hard brush and slowly erase the excess hair that’s blocking the proper outline of the mouth and chin

Posted Image

LET’s ADD HIGHLIGHTS

MAKE ALL LAYERS VISIBLE
Hide the Posterized layer and create a new layer filled with the color #d4d4d4

This layer is acting as your backrground so place it under all the others
Get a soft brush size 484 color #f5f4f4 and click in the center of thebackground- on the same layer guys- or make your own background.
When you like what you see make a merged copy
Ctrl A ( to select all) >> SHIFT CTRL C >> Copy all merged layers >> CTRL V

Drag that layer to the top – we will add highlights to this layer.
CTRL J

Duplicate the layer just to have a backup incase anything goes drastically wrong

NOW GUYS DON’T TELL ANYONE I SAID TO DO THIS BUT IT’s SO MUCH EASIER I CANT HELP IT ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS IS JUST VERSION 1 :/
You SHOULD get a soft brush and use the burn tool to add diff tones such as shadows on the skin and what not but honestly, which i admit is what i did but! after 8 pages  I’m tired and I’ll save that for the advanced version lmao yes this is the simple version.

SO here goes.
Get the original picture and drag it to the top
Set it to Soft Light and erase where necessary so that it looks realistic to a point don’t add the pattern because no one’s gonna believe you sat down and did that anyway.
YOU GET THE IDEA right?

It should be- use whatever tool that u usually use to cut people out and after you've made your selection fill it with the color that you would've picked out using the eyedropper tool. I might have to check this out
