BHM [BLEND] Black History Month Tut By Ren Made For: Photoshop Images: mask Illy1 Tiger woman1 Soul woman astro woman3 Made In: Cs4 STEP 1 Create a new canvas 800 x 800 pxls White background Select a hard brush size 4 color black That will determine how thick the line that we’re going to draw is, also you could use the line tool but I’m kinda on a mission to get people to use the pen tool more so yea. Select the pen tool and split the canvas diagonally / draw a line to cut the canvas in two on an angle. Right click >> Stroke path Ensure that simulate brush pressure isn’t selected ![]() That line will determine how the images will flow on the canvas. STEP 2 Now we’re going to get the image of the mask and drag it to the line. The mask was done by outlining the mask in this picture and filling the selection with black. (start making your own resources guys) So after you’ve dragged it to the line that’s that- we’re going to add text Select black and with font Arial Narrow about size 14 Select “toggle the Character” Icon (step 2 in the image below) when the window appears select the icon shown below in step 3 and select -100 so that the letter spacing is nonexistent. (the opposite will space the letters out) Moving on, it’s time to angle it and sit it on the line but to prevent the edges from getting jagged and distorted convert it to a shape. Right Click on the Text Layer >> Select Convert to Shape Now you can angle it and drag it to sit on the line. ![]() You should now have something like this STEP 3 Now to add some drama to this we’re going to get Illy1 which I snagged from behance.net Simply drag it to the bottom right corner of the page and get your polygon tool We want to give the effect that a burst of light is coming from the midst of the right half of the design wherever the line cuts the design (based on how you set it on the canvas) one half should have a burst of light while the other should be normal. To prevent the left half of illy from being erased use the polygon tool to select the part of illy that’s on the right side. (see below) After you have the marching ants Get a brush size 484px and click once in the center of the design See if you’re with me ![]() So we now have something like this Time to add one of the main focus points of the piece, the large B this as well as ‘H’ was done by angling and playing with the form controls. Type ‘B’ (caps) Arial BLACK size 72 Make sure that “show transform controls” is selected on your options bar. when the guides appear click the center control i have no clue what it’s called but it’s circled in green below, when you click that the transform controls should appear in place of the options bar. When you’ve finished angling you can either click the tick mark at the far right or press enter. BACK TO THE B When the transform controls appear go to width [w] and put a subtraction sign before the number 100 so that it flips the B horizontally. Press enter Convert to Shape so we can angle and let it hang from the line like a flag on a pole. Right Click Layer B >> Convert To Shape ![]() You should now have something like this On to the H Type the Letter H size 48 Arial Black color Black Convert to shape Right Click Layer H>> Convert to Shape Somewhat Tricky part, by holding down the ctrl button on your keyboard you can click and angle each corner until it seems as though the H is flying off the page when you’re through press enter. ![]() STEP 4 The easy part Drag Tiger to the canvas and set to lighten. Position the picture so that the tiger seems to be in the B but we still get the glow of the sky in the H and a bit in the mask I couldn’t find the original pic so I just took the one from the psd. So get woman1 and desaturate her SHIFT CTRL U Or Image >> Adjustments>> Desaturate Position her in the midst of the burst of light that we had made earlier on the right side of the canvas and set her to DARKEN You should have something like this Make a Merged Copy CTRL A >> SHIFT CTRL C>> CTRL V Select All>> Edit >> Copy Merged>> Edit>> Paste Inverse color CTRL I Then Desaturate to even it out SHIFT CTRL U Now you should have something like this STEP 5 If you want you can make a duplicate just for backup or you can just put a mask on the layer and with a black soft brush erase gently. This will give you a misty glow and the night sky feel of the original piece. Get your polygon tool and just draw random triangular shapes along the line deleting as you go along use this as reference ![]() If the cuts are too sharp undo and use a soft brush to gently erase the selection. STEP 6 Get Soul drag it to your canvas this is for the image of a woman in the letter H. You can choose from the various sets in the image which woman you’d like to use but I used the one at the top left of the two panel scan. Drag and position Soul so that she seems to be in the letter H then set to Lighten Erase where necessary (until she only seems to be in the letter H)
CHECK IF YOU’RE WITH MIO ![]() STEP 7 Use your pen tool to outline the main images B mask and H When you’ve finished drawing one line hold down ctrl then click that will allow you to draw another path when you’ve finished Select a hard brush size 4 color white Go back to your pen tool Create a New Layer Right Click >> Stroke path To get the faded look you can simply use a soft eraser and with a lower opacity or flow erase along the lines. ![]() CTRL J will duplicate the layer you can then drag that so that you have 2 lines running parallel BLAST!! OH ok so I forgot a step so we’re going to have to switch this up a bit ;/ Go back to the mask layer ctrl J duplicate the layer then drag that layer to the top of your layer window. It will look black again but that doesn’t matter Get woman astro and drag it to the canvas making sure that it’s above the mask layer HOLD DOWN ALT Then move your cursor to the line between layer woman astro and layer mask THEN CLICK The picture of the woman should now be in the mask- move her around until she’s peering out at us. Also you should see a mini arrow pointing downwards ![]() STEP 8 Get woman3 and drag her to the canvas. Just like we did illy we’re going to cut her in half diagonally. So drag her to the canvas Desaturate her SHIFT CTRL U Set to DARKEN ![]() STEP 9 Coloring Layer>> New Adjustment Layer >> Selective Coloring Neutrals Cyan +48 Magenta +9 Yellow -13 Black -3 Absolute checked Blacks Yellow -4 Black +3 Absolute checked Finally Finished ![]() kinda rushed it so tell me if there are any glitches in it |
