KNOCKOFF HEAVEN TUT

Type: Blend
Made in: Photoshop Cs3, Xara 3D
Made for: Photoshop- should be translatable
Images: rediva Shoe origami, Cleaned Shoe Lines
Tools needed: Xara 3D Pen Tool Tutorial
PEN TOOL SETTINGS
FOR SHAPES: Posted Image
FOR PATHS: Posted Image

Hey guys I know I promised the gall layout tut first but I figured I’d just get a blend off my chest- I’ve seen a lot of 3D styles coming up on different boards and wanted to make sure that you guys could keep up with the trend. Hence this tut- Heaven. If you’ve done the B.H Blend tut this should be easy because it uses some (if not all) of the same techniques, it’s not exactly the same- seeing that I cant find the PSD but I’ll try and get it close to it. Also, this is done on a large scale- after you’ve completed the tutorial you can always downsize. Oh and it wont be an extremely detailed i'm just giving you the basics on how it could be done.

HERE'S A PREVIEW OF WHAT WE'RE GOING TO BE LEARNING TO MAKE

STEP 1
Create as new canvas size 1282 x 1269 px.
Fill with black #000000
Get rediva and drag her to your canvas- place her in the bottom left corner of the canvas
Or anywhere you please
NOW HIDE HER! ( rediva)
Go back to your black background layer and create a new layer which should fall between the background layer and rediva.
Here’s where you’re going to fake blending
On the new layer you created add a burst of dark grey #171317 in the bottom right corner using a soft brush size 1557px
Because we want to make the diva’s background seem to fade into ours we’ve added the grey so when we’re ready to erase the background of rediva it will seem to fade into ours seamlessly.
Reveal the rediva layer that you had hid in an earlier step, check if you’re still with me

Posted Image

Time to erase the background of rediva making sure you’re on her layer- get a soft brush size 199px with a flow= 71% and gently erase until it seems as though the entire canvas is her background.

STEP 2

Now that you’ve got a decent background to work with we can start adding some of the abstract shapes that you see in the background.
Drag origami shoe to your canvas and position it so that the sole of the shoe is sitting on the top of the slanted H (You can lower the opacity of the shoe to see that you’re positioning it accurately.

We have to clean up the image so get your magic wand, click on the background and delete.
Then use your polygonal tool to neaten it up…..or use the pre-cleaned image provided.
(BUT YOU SHOULD PRACTICE lol)

Selective Coloring
Making sure that your Shoe layer is selected go to
Image >> Adjustments >> Selective Color

Clicking on the down arrow beside “Colors” choose neutrals and enter these percentages
Cyan: -81 Magenta: +62 Yellow: 100 Black: +41
Method : Relative

Posted Image

You should now have something that looks like this

- OPTIONAL-
Use the eyedropper tool to select the various colors of the shoe and on a new layer use the polygonal tool to outline the different triangles that make up the shoe and fill so that the colors pop a bit more. I changed the colors a bit so that they looked brighter.

Posted Image

You don’t have to do it for the entire shoe just for the parts that look low quality….which to me were the areas I addressed in the pic above.

STEP 3
Now here’s where we go our separate ways, the rest of the shapes used were done using the pen tool, just random swirls and such.

SHAPE 1
Ensuring that your pen tool has the following settings we’re going to select a color then draw a shape that will add some drama to the piece.
Now that you’ve drawn your first shape we are going to hide it make a merged copy of the canvas then paste it above the layer that has your shape.
Hide the shape layer
Make a merged copy of the blend so far
Select All [CTRL A] >> Copy Merged [SHIFT CTRL C] >> Paste [ CTRL V]
After you’ve pasted, your merged copy should be right above the shape you drew.
[reveal the Shape layer that you hid earlier]

DROP IMAGE IN SHAPE
What we’re going to do is drop the merged copy into the shape. Hold down ALT and click between the shape 1 layer and the merged copy layer. When an arrow pointing down appears you’ve successfully dropped the merged copy into the shape. Move it around until you see something that you like.

Check the picture below to see that you’re on the right track

SHAPE 2
Draw another shape using the same method for shape 1
Making a merged copy and dropping it in – the whole works.
You might end up with something like this:

Posted Image

It might look a bit choppy and lame now but have faith folks 

Make a merged copy of the Canvas again and paste then set that layer to Multiply
Drag Lines to the canvas and position how you like OR
Using these pen tool settings (FOR PATHS)
Posted Image

Make a new layer (call it swirl or lines)
Get a hard yellow brush size 3
Go back and get your pen tool.
Draw your own swirl >> RIGHT CLICK >>stroke path>> OK
Duplicate that layer and line them up side by side to get a swirl similar to mine
To duplicate quickly, Hold down alt then click and drag, repeat

Posted Image
For better handling of the lines you can Hold down CTRL key and select the layers that make up your swirly lines then right click and select Merge Layers
Then to add a bit of depth you can use a soft brush size 442px and erase the ends so the lines seem to fade in and out.
Now for text which is really the focus of this tut.

STEP 4

Open Xara 3D

Since the H is already provided we’re going to add the rest of the letters that make up heaven.

After you’ve installed Xara 3d open it

Since the H is already provided we’re going to add the rest of the letters that make up heaven.

Take a look at what you have so far and try to visualize how you’d like your letters to flow, how you’d like to angle them and so on. You can get a piece of paper and just sketch how you’d like the letters to look so that when you get into Xara 3D you’ll know how you’re going to angle each letter.

In this case each letter was done individually so let’s start with E
Click on the Aa symbol on your tool bar then enter the letter E ( or whichever you feel) a window should open with various fonts and formatting tools. Play around with them and get familiar- when you’re through click OK.

You should have your letter with a circle around it.

Posted Image

To get rid of the circle you can select the X on your toolbar that doesn’t have a circle around it at all.

Now we can change the bevel style by using the options on the right of the screen

Select Bevel Options >> Type NONE >> Angle however you feel using the vertical and horizontal scrollbars.

Posted Image

Once satisfied we can export it.

File>> Export>> File Name: _______ Save as Type: PNG >> Save

Posted Image

That’s basically how you’re going to handle all your letters.
NOW we head back to photoshop and open the letter as an image and edit and style it how we like!

STEP 5

Open E

Drag it to your canvas

Resize and angle how you like

Hold SHIFT and ALT to resize accurately without loosing the proper proportions

Get your magic wand and click on the beige part of the letter E

Once you get marching ants Go to your color palette and choose a color you like. In this case I used red #c80206 from the letter H.

On the same layer use the eyedropper tool to get a color from your existing blend then with the fill bucket fill the marching ants with the color.

Without getting rid of the marching ants go back to your color palette and choose a darker shade of the same color so we can add some depth to the face of the letter. I used #700507
Get a soft brush of a reasonable size [I used one of 200px ]

Then brush around the edges of the letter’s face
When you are through CTRL D to get rid of the marching ants.

Posted Image

Now to avoid adjusting the colors of the text sides individually we’re going to use selective coloring!
Make sure your settings match these and there you have it a colored E

Posted Image

Repeat this process until you finish your text making the color of the text face fade into yellow or any other color you wish.

The final flair
STEP 6
In the original pic there’s a ray of light coming from behind the yellow N. This next step will show you how easy it is to make.
Get your polygonal tool and draw a ray of light similar in shape to the one in the original blend.
When you see marching ants fill with yellow.
CTRL D

Posted Image
Next we’re going to get a soft brush and gently erase around the edges of the ray to give it some character. Your brush size may vary – for me I used a 200 px brush.

Hold Down ALT button and drag the Ray to the right so that it makes a duplicate .
In the layers window select both rays, layer 1 and it’s copy then right click and select Merge layers
Finally with a soft brush size 380px erase the end of the ray so that it seems to beam from behind the text.
Seeing that this is just an overciiew I’ll be available for any corrections etc
