Yesterday I was talking to DM Duke and he mentioned the Lawful Stupid alignment. I wrote a variation of said alignment as well as Chaotic Stupid some time ago at my last server and thought you all would get a kick out of it. Enjoy :D. CHAOTIC STUPID - THE VILLAGE IDIOT A chaotic stupid character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him, especially when important factors such as logic or reasoning is involved. He makes his own way, acting much like the wind, but eventually spiraling into a maelstrom. While exciting, it always ends in tragic disaster for those around him. He believes in goodness, or at least his own view of it, but has little use for the actual alignments, since he transcends them. He hates it when people try to trick him with common sense and logical debate. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with anyone else around him, or for that matter make sense. Chaotic stupid is the best alignment you can be because it combines a lack of commitment with the free spirit of any of the nine alignments. It is, essentially, the nine alignments in a blender after the user hits “frappe”. Chaotic stupid can be a dangerous alignment because you never know what this character will do. They are about as subtle as a train wreck and revel in spreading chaos and misery to unsuspecting people. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ While creatures of this alignment view freedom and randomness of actions as ultimate truths, they likewise place value of life and welfare of each individual, no matter their background or endless acts of murder to suggest the world would be better off without them. Respect for individualism is also great, but never consistent and at most times whimsical. By promoting the philosophy of chaotic stupid, characters of this alignment seek to spread panic and disarray throughout the poor unsuspecting world. To the chaotic stupid individual, nothing is sacred, and freedom and independence are as important as sensual pleasure, which they seek relentlessly. The ethos views this freedom as the only means by which each creature can achieve true satisfaction and happiness. Law, order, social forms, common sense, logic, and anything else which tends to restrict or abridge individual freedom is wrong, and each individual is capable of achieving self-realization and prosperity through himself, herself, or itself. Chaotic stupid characters are strong individualists marked by a streak of randomness and whim. They believe in all the virtues of goodness and right, but they have little use for those silly things like “facts” or “education” or worse yet “logical analysis”. Don’t count on your nonsensical ideologies like experience, wisdom, and common sense working on this one, good sir Paladin. We got this, so kick back and watch the flames. They have no use for people who "try to push folk around and tell them what to do." Their actions are guided by their own moral compass which, although good by intention, may not always be in [strike]perfect[/strike] any agreement with the rest of society. These characters are basically good, but tend to be selfish and maybe a bit greedy. Okay, perhaps more than just a little greedy. It depends on their mood, really. They tend to hold personal freedom and welfare above anything else. The chaotic stupid dislikes anyone who is reasonable or “thinks” about their actions before doing it. Be a man, we say, leap first, mend bones later! The chaotic stupid character has a "naive" attitude toward existence. In this character's opinion, any laws, social structures, or other such hierarchies that restrict his freedom are abhorrent and to be done away with. The inviolable right of the individual to seek his own pleasures is one of the cornerstones of society; but, being good, the chaotic stupid being will not tread on others to get his own way, unless it frustrates others, for he feels that every other creature has the right to the pursuit of pleasure as well. Friends of a chaotic stupid character will find him unreliable. Yes. That was stated as matter-of-factly. Unreliable. Obviously, almost everyone has this tendency, but it is left up to this individual whether or not he values a friendship at all. The chaotic stupid being would not, however, take action that could unnecessarily jeopardize the lives of other persons or creatures. Instead, they’d herp derp and watch as the jeopardized lives of other persons or creatures are pulverized into talcum powder. A chaotic stupid character will keep his word to those who are not evil and will lie only to evil-doers, which is convenient for them since they can hardly determine the difference. He will never attack an unarmed foe and will never harm an innocent. He will not use torture to extract information or for pleasure, but he may "rough up" someone to get information. It isn’t torture if you don’t call it that, after all. He will never kill for pleasure, only in self-defense or in the defense of others. A chaotic stupid character will never use poison, but they are unusually potent at abilities such as a DC 200 Wail of the Banshee 1/day when challenged for their supremacy. He will help those in need and he prefers to work alone, as he values his freedom, and finds all the intellectual minds that may surround him harshes his brood vibe. He does not respond well to higher authority, is distrustful of organizations, and will disregard the law in his fight against…whatever drew their ire at some point. He will never betray a family member, comrade, or friend, unless in doing so frustrates others. Chaotic stupid characters do not respect the concepts of self-discipline and honor, because they believe such concepts limit freedom to act in the most idiotic fashion possible. Here are some possible adjectives describing chaotic stupid characters: unpredictable, redundant, independent, free spirited, no-spirited, broody, idiotic, optimistic, pessimistic, blank, easy going, stubborn, philosophical, carefree, foolhardy, unoriginal, impotent, positive, negative, redundant, powerful, lustful, inept, helpful, helpless, redundant, hopeless, thoughtless, needless, contradictory, petty, redundant, cold, lukewarm, hot, ridiculous, dramatic, dull, witty, dry, colorful, bland, plagiaristic, pitiful, kind, rude, aggressive, passive, rudimentary, complicated, redundant, emotional, merciful, respectful of personal liberties, and anarchic. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The Ten Chaotic Stupid Commandments A list of Ten Commandments for a chaotic stupid religion may look like this: 1. You shall lie whenever whimsical if it makes situations worse. 2. You shall pursue unlimited frustration for yourself and others. 3. You shall not murder, unless doing so frustrates others. 4. You shall do a random act of violence for no apparent reason, especially if it frustrates others. 5. You shall exaggerate your emotions. 6. You shall break the law whenever most inconvenient. 7. You shall divide by zero. 8. You shall avenge the acts of the logical with illogical retaliations. 9. You shall not place duty above personal desire to frustrate others 10. You shall seek unlimited sensual pleasure. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The Ten Chaotic Stupid Sins Likewise, a chaotic stupid religion may list the following as sins. This list is given in the order of least severe infraction to most severe. 1. Failing to drive an individual away with nonsensical blubbering. 2. Failing to perform an act of stupidity in order to rapidly degrade a situation. 3. Discovering common sense. 4. Failing to aggravate potential allies by aiding obvious enemies 5. Failing to contradict yourself. 6. Failing to seek attention at the detriment of others. 7. Following a law that makes perfect reasonable sense. 8. Following your deity’s dogma accurately without engaging in circular debate. 9. Failing to engage in circular debate. 10. Listening to sound advice. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The Chaotic Stupid Adventurer The following two lists detail common actions undertaken during "adventuring" that are considered honorable and dishonorable for the chaotic stupid alignment. An honorable action is one that is in keeping with the spirit of this alignment, while dishonorable actions tend to be those which bring shame to the character in the eyes of his or her alignment peers. Note that an action which is considered honorable by one alignment may be considered dishonorable by another alignment and vice versa. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The following actions are honorable for this alignment: See all other Nine Alignments. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The following actions are dishonorable for this alignment: See all other Nine Alignments ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Chaotic Stupid and Society A chaotic stupid being... Is not concerned with the desires of the logical Values flexible relationships with romantic partners, all ten thousand of them. Considers himself above the law, and everything else. Finds most people to be narrow-minded and inflexible. Nerg nerg nerg! Believes window-licking should be a nationally recognized sport. Finds the legal procedures of his nation corrupt, no matter how much it may make sense. Believes derp determines herp. Will break any contract when he feels like it. Will not want to disappoint his family, no matter how much they say it. Will support their family even if it means their family’s personal discomfort. Will never betray a friend and enjoys having close friends; very, very close friends. Considers the needs of the community in personal life to be arbitrary and nonsensical. Will give his life in defense of his community, because permadeath isn’t enforced. Will take actions to aid others (i.e. evil) during times of crisis, especially if it frustrates others. Believes everyone should be treated fairly and kindly, no matter what horrid calamities they have wrought. Feels guilt when he commits a wrongdoing and will seek to right his wrong by committing more wrongdoing. Uses wealth to help others who are less fortunate until he himself is the less fortunate. A chaotic stupid government. ….. ….. …. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Chaotic Stupid and Other Alignments Chaotic Stupid does not care about your alignments. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The Philosophy of Chaotic Stupid Chaotic stupid is the philosophy that goodness is best achieved through the freedom of individuals to act independently, regardless of consequence. It is a philosophy of autistic individualism. This philosophy holds that people should behave whimsically and that society exists for the sake of its individual members. In short, Chaotic Stupid cares little for your logical assessments and past experiences. They live in the now, where the real world is and rarely delves into the past. History, after all, is written by the successors and they’ve no need to read your silly books or dusty tomes. Why bother viewing past, pre-established norms when you’ve got the intellectually quotient of pond scum? Chaotic Stupid forges their own path, despise whatever confusing factors seem to bombard their way. They’ll brush them all aside and walk firmly into the Abyss to prove to you that stupidity truly has no bounds. Leave your facts at home, sheep. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ LAWFUL STUPID- THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS JUSTICAR OF BADASSERY A Lawful Stupid character does not act as a good person is expected or required to act. He is his own kind of good. He combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly in pursuit of said evil, even if said evil might actually be good. He tells the truth (most of the time), keeps his word, helps those in need (selectively), and speaks out against injustice, except for the ones he creates. Heis justice after all. How dare you for questioning his awesomeness! He will invent new torments to be visited upon you at a later time, for great justice. You, good sir, are on the way to destruction. A Lawful Stupid character hates to see the guilty go unpunished or the innocent to be not be viewed as guilty. Lawful Stupid is the best alignment you can be because it combines honor and compassion, but are typically farces in the grand scheme of things. Let’s face it. This is the best alignment because you have your god’s backing no matter what you do. It is, essentially, all the lawful alignments combined into one much like one would make a smore, but it is a smore of justice. Lawful Stupid can be a dangerous alignment because it endangers anyone who’s ever broken a minor law and is not in general the picture of perfect society. Don’t let that comfort you if you are though. You will still be viewed with great scrutiny! *glares* _______________________________________________________________________________________________ While arbitrarily strict in their prosecution of law and order, characters of Lawful Stupid alignment follow these precepts to improve the common woe. Certain freedoms must, when convenient, be sacrificed in order to bring order; but truth is of highest value, so it is rarely given out as those of lawful stupid are naturally greedy and do not wish to share their wealth. Life and beauty are of great importance. The benefits of this society are to be brought to all. Creatures of Lawful Stupid alignment view the cosmos with varying degrees of lawfulness or desire for good. They are convinced that order and law are absolutely necessary to assure good, by any means necessary, no matter how horrid or contradictory, and that good is best defined as whatever brings the most benefit to those he deems are good, thinking creatures and the least woe to those that question his divine awesome. Characters of this alignment believe that an orderly, strong society with a well-organized government is boring and overstepping their authority. They abhor judicial systems that require physical evidence, since spectral evidence is just as accurate and much more convenient. Lawful Stupid never lies, after all. So, they are by definition the Judge, Jury, and Executioner. They are also never bias, even when being bias. Don’t say he is bias by the way. Bad idea. To ensure the quality of life, laws must be created and obeyed or flogging will ensue. Naturally, no one likes flogging, so the laws are sure to be obeyed. When people respect the laws and try to help one another, no one gets hurt, unless doing so would be entertaining. These characters have a strong moral character. Truth, honor, and the welfare of others is all-important. I said stop questioning him, infidel. They are convinced that order and laws are absolutely necessary to assure that goodness prevails, so will invent new ones daily. A rule-heavy society is a good society, no matter how arbitrary or irritating the rules may be. Ao help you if you break them in front of this character. Lawful Stupid beings will not want to lie or cheat anyone, good or evil, unless convenient. They will not stand for treachery (aside their own) and will not let obviously dishonorable people use their own honor against them, if they can help it. How dare you undermine them! They will obey the laws and customs of the area that they are in, but will attempt to find legal loopholes to disobey a law which is clearly meaningful and reasonable. They are above the law anyone else but themselves make. Even then, they are above their own law as well. Lawful Stupid characters are group and order oriented and likely one of the most complicated if not simple organizations in existence, and will cooperate with authority in all cases whether evil or good to promote the common woe. Not all Lawful Stupid beings view the cosmos with an equal desire for lawfulness and goodness, so there is no such thing as a perfectly balanced "Lawful Stupid" attitude (Words of a heathen. I shall smite thee!). In general, however, a Lawful Stupid character promotes the ideals and rights of the majority over those of the individual (to not include himself) and upholds the weak and oppressed members of society, dangling them over a cliff’s edge by the throat, who should be allowed to reap society's benefits with equanimity lest the wish to be dropped into the pit. Happiness is mandatory in the world of lawful stupid. The Lawful Stupid being feels this is the best way that all members of society can enjoy the rights of existence together. Life is important to the Lawful Stupid being, but life is not exclusive of order, and vice versa. Lawful Stupid can appear to be a difficult alignment to uphold, but it must be remembered that Lawful Stupid characters are naive and unrealistic, often violent if provoked or witness to sudden movements. At the heart of a Lawful Stupid alignment is the belief in a system of laws that foolhardily promotes the welfare of all members of a society, ensures their safety, and guarantees relentless and nonsensical aberrations of justice. So long as the laws are applied fairly to all people, it doesn't matter to the Lawful Stupid character whether they originate from a democracy or a dictator. Though all Lawful Stupid systems adhere to the same general principles, specific laws will always be different. One society may allow a wife to have two husbands; another may enforce strict monogamy, while others may enforce mandatory polygamy. Gambling may be tolerated in one system, forbidden in another, or only forbidden on certain days of certain months. A Lawful Stupid character does not respect the laws of other Lawful Stupid cultures and will seek to impose his own values on their citizens. When two lawful stupid characters meet, only one walks away. However, a Lawful Stupid character will not honor a law that runs contrary to his views, which by default are any laws he himself did not create. A government may believe that regulated and properly managed gambling provides a harmless diversion, but a Lawful Stupid character may determine that the policy has resulted in devastating poverty and despair. In this character's mind, the government is guilty of a lawless act by promoting an exploitative and destructive enterprise. In response, he may encourage citizens to refrain from gambling, or he may work to change the law. Particularly abhorrent practices, such as slavery and torture, may force the Lawful Stupid character to take direct action, unless he doesn’t like the individuals being enslaved or tortured. He plays favorites. It doesn't matter if these practices are culturally acceptable or sanctioned by well-meaning officials. His opinion is absolute and should be forced onto others, lest his sword need be. The Lawful Stupid character's sense of justice is narrow, inflexible, and sporadic. It compels him to intervene and cause as much suffering as he can. Note, though, that time constraints, inadequate resources, and other commitments may limit his involvement, for which the rest of the world is thankful for. While a Lawful Stupid character might wish for a cultural revolution in a society to tolerate cannibalism, he may have to content himself with rescuing a few victims before circumstances force him to leave the area, to be devoured later. (5) When will a Lawful Stupid character take a life? A Lawful Stupid being kills whenever necessary to promote the greater good, or to protect himself, his companions, or anyone whom he's vowed to defend. Murder is fine for this character, especially if he has his personal reasons behind it. Again, you dare challenge him? He shall entrench your skull with his mighty fist! In times of war, he strikes down the enemies of his nation, and anyone unfortunately enough to be caught in his backswing. He does not interfere with a legal execution, unless it frustrates others, so long as the punishment fits the crime or he deems the execution is painful and humiliating enough. Otherwise, a Lawful Stupid character avoids killing whenever possible, which is seldom and far-between. He does not kill a person who is merely suspected of a crime, he disembowels them first. This character will necessarily kill someone he perceives to be a threat unless he has tangible evidence to suggest they are not evil, which he will likely see as an act of blasphemy and disregard, killing them anyway. He never kills for treasure or personal gain unless rent is due. He never knowingly kills an innocent being, which is convenient since no one is ever innocent. A Lawful Stupid character will keep his word if he gives it and will never lie unless doing so is profitable or causes unneeded strife so that he may later smite more infidels. He will never hesitate to attack an unarmed foe who is evil in his eyes. He will never kill for pleasure, only in self-defense or in the defense of others, or if he does not like you. A Lawful Stupid character will never use nonlethal poison. He will help those in need and he prefers to work with others, or should I say, have others work for him. He responds well to higher authority (kill it with fire), is trustful of organizations (to a degree), and will always follow the laws he creates unless he feels they are too personally restricting. He will never betray a family member, comrade, or friend (though he will attempt to bring an immoral or law-breaking friend to justice, in order to rehabilitate that person, with violence and torture). Lawful Stupid characters respect the concepts of self-discipline and their own honor. Here are some possible adjectives describing Lawful Stupid characters: friendly, courteous, angry, aggressive, odd, self-righteous, [insert more pointless adjectives here], obsessive, sensitive to the feelings of others, insensitive, herp, scrupulous, derp, honorable, herpa derp, trustworthy, scary, sadistic, confusing, morbid, brooding, reliable, helpful, loyal, and respectful of "life, love, and the pursuit of happiness." _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Ten Lawful Stupid Commandments A list of Ten Commandments for a Lawful Stupid religion may look like this: 1. You shall herp derp. 2. You shall proceed to three. 3. You shall not pass. 4. You shall help the needy, unless doing so is inconvenient. 5. You shall not honor legitimate authority that promotes goodness if it undermines your own. 6. You shall follow your own laws, sometimes. 7. You shall betray others at whim. 8. You shall be relentlessly prejudice and close-minded. 9. You shall not listen to others that are not your alignment. 10. You shall seek unlimited good for others and unlimited order in society, whether they want it or not. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Ten Lawful Stupid Sins Likewise, a Lawful Stupid religion may list the following as sins. This list is given in the order of least severe infraction to most severe. 1. Failing to ignore an obvious crime. 2. Failing to draw your weapon when insulted. 3. Not being motivated by pride, avarice, gluttony, or some other sinful impulse. 4. Failing to assist a Chaotic Stupid character. 5. Failing to bed a Chaotic Stupid character, which takes enormous effort. 6. Failing to write arbitrary laws and enforce them 7. Being reasoned with. 8. Following your deity’s dogma, all of them. 9. Failing to be petty and whiny when you do not get your way. 10. Failing to conspire against all goodly beings you don’t personally like. The Lawful Stupid Adventurer The following two lists detail common actions undertaken during "adventuring" that are considered honorable and dishonorable for the Lawful Stupid alignment. An honorable action is one that is in keeping with the spirit of this alignment, while dishonorable actions tend to be those which bring shame to the character in the eyes of his or her alignment peers. Note that an action which is considered honorable by one alignment may be considered dishonorable by another alignment and vice versa. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The following actions are honorable for this alignment: Anything the Lawful Stupid character does is considered honorable. Do you honestly want to question him? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The following actions are dishonorable for this alignment: The Lawful Stupid character never acts dishonorably, never. Burn infidels! _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Lawful Stupid and Society A Lawful Stupid being... Respects the authority figures of any domain and assists by creating more laws. Values lifelong commitment to a romantic partner, particularly if they are Chaotic Stupid. Likes the taste of blood. Respects only his own laws. Considers public service in a leadership role to be a waste of personal time. Supports the legal procedures of the nation, without regard to the discomfort of others. Seeks secure employment, believing hard work will pay off in the end. Extortion is hard work after all! Will disappoint his family, if he hasn’t killed them. Will support their family even if it means their family’s discomfort. Will betray a friend if he doesn’t feel like getting involved with them. Never considers the needs of the community in personal life. Will take actions to aid others during times of crisis, if he’s paying attention. Will give his life in defense of his community, which the community will be thankful he’s gone. Will contradict himself and horribly lack consistency. Then, will make more laws. Believes everyone should be treated fairly and kindly, unless he doesn’t like you. Feels guilt when he commits a wrongdoing and will seek to right his wrong by making more arbitrary laws. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ A community with a Lawful Stupid government usually has a volume set of laws, and most people begrudgingly obey those laws. In a Lawful Stupid society, the people are generally honest, law-abiding, and helpful, or mercy help them. They mean well (at least most of them do). They respect the law. As a rule, people don't walk around wearing armor and carrying weapons. Those who do are viewed with suspicion or as trouble-makers and likely burned at the stake. Some societies tend to dislike adventurers, since they often bring trouble. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Lawful Stupid and Other Alignments Lawful Stupid > All other alignments. Winning! _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Philosophy of Lawful Stupid Lawful Stupid is the philosophy that goodness is best achieved through law and order, lots and lots of law and order. It is a philosophy of autistic collectivism. This philosophy holds that people should behave contradictorily and put the needs of the group ahead of individual desires, or die in a fire. Lawful Stupid can also be associated with rule totalitarianism and ethical monopoly. The ideal government for this alignment is an authoritarian state with a healthy plethora of arbitrary and needless laws supporting a social order in which radical egoism is punished, as well as most anything else. Lawful Stupid beings want the power of the state to be used for the benefit of all, regardless of what the all might think or want. Rehabilitative justice is used to reform criminals and evil-doers. Flogging is preferred. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ |
