This video was on the old core rules cdrom for 2nd edition, always loved it... really stereotypical, but just awesome way to show what roleplaying is all about, music is nice and fitting too (the original video was less blurry, better sound and not so dark though <,<) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jslR11hhrYY |

2nd Ed. is what we play. Sometimes our DM likes 1st. Or we'll mix some aspects of the two. I want to get the books for 3rd though. And forget 4th. <_< |

It was sort of funny. I more or less stopped playing when it was still AD&D (1st ed.), and aside from getting to see the changes with games like Baldur's Gate and the first NWN, it was really over a decade and a half before NWN2 brought me to actually start looking into sourcebooks in-depth again. What I've found is that so far as the game is concerned, I definitely prefer the rules of 3/3.5/d20. The removal of racial caps, prestige classes, and the THAC0 vs. BAB and negative/positive AC changes really make for a more enjoyable, entertaining, and wide-open game experience. However, working on content here at SCoD has required me to go back and work with quite a bit of 2ed stuff, and what I've found is that it's focused on a much more visceral experience of play. A great example is in modules: in 2ed, you'd get a two-line stat list of an NPC or creature, and then a major write-up of lore to go along with it, leaving it mostly up to the DM to decide how the NPC's actions and even fighting style would fit in. Whereas in 3.5, you get these huge "encounter blocks" focusing more on die-rolls and combat strategy. Not necessarily a bad thing, but this definitely foreshadows... 4ed. I've mentioned before that I don't like it at all, and I think a major part of that has to do with its focus on mechanics and away from actual RP. Sure, it definitely makes things easier for people who don't have math skills, and definitely might bring some players into the game who were scared away by the plethora of options and possible calculations required before... but at the expense of the wide-open experience of 3.5ed, not to mention giving it the feel of a videogame where mechanics are the single most important part of the game experience. p.s., that was just a personal opinion. Please don't let this open up into yet another 3.5 vs. 4e argument that can't be won. If you like 4e, that's just fine, it doesn't make you less of a human being, just someone with a differing viewpoint. If I wanted to engage in vitriolic arguments, I'd post about Obama, the Tea Party, or religion.
